Office The Year in Review OSA mission statement, academic activities, staff achievements, annual work plan accomplishments, and plans and prospects for of the State FY 2019. By the Numbers Archaeologist 30,094 An overview of FY 2019 through numbers and charts. Fiscal Year 2019 Student Success Eighteen undergraduate and one graduate students were Annual Report involved in various OSA archaeological and related research and repository activities over the course of the fiscal year. Research The OSA conducts a wide range of research activities to discover the archaeological and architectural history of Iowa and surrounding midcontinent over the last 13,000 years. Bioarchaeology In FY 2019 the OSA Bioarchaeology Program’s efforts have focused on fulfilling its responsibilities towards the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act as well as engaging in public education and outreach events. Strategic Initiatives The OSA provides resources and opportunities that encourage the understanding, appreciation, and stewardship of Iowa’s archaeological past. OSA Mission The Year in The position of State Archaeologist was established in 1959. Read the entire mission statement Review Advisory Committee Indian Advisory Council Academic Activities OSA staff instructed four UI classes during FY 2019 including CRM Archaeology and Human Osteology. OSA hosted eight Brown Bag lectures and a creative writing class for the UI English Department. Office and Staff Achievements During FY 2019, OSA staff were recognized for their outstanding professional presence and decades of service. We also welcomed three new hires to the OSA team! FY 2019 Annual Work Plan Accomplishments In FY 2019 the OSA continued energetically pursuing research, education and outreach, and service activities throughout Iowa, the surrounding region, and internationally. -

Accepted 23 April, 2012 Hypericum perforatum is known as St. John's Wort. H. perforatum extracts and essential oil are important in drug development with numerous pharmacological activities around the world, including Iran. For a long time, H. perforatum has been used in traditional medicines for healing skin wounds, eczema, burns, diseases of the alimentary tract, and psychological disorders especially depression. H. perforatum has recently been shown to have antioxidant, anticonvulsant, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, cytotoxic and antidiabetic activities. Hypericin, pseudohypericin, hyperoside, rutin, quercetin and hyperforin are the main compounds which are reported in this plant. α-Pinene, caryophyllene, caryophyllene oxide, germacrene D and 2-methyloctane were identified as the major constituents for H. perforatum essential oil collected from different parts of the world. Due to the easy collection of the plant, its widespread and also remarkable biological activities, this plant has become a medicine worldwide. This review presents comprehensive analyzed information on the botanical, chemical and pharmacological aspects of H. perforatum at preclinical and clinical levels. Abstract The Tulula Wetlands Mitigation Bank, the first wetlands mitigation bank in the Blue Ridge Province of North Carolina, was created to compensate for losses resulting from highway projects in western North Carolina. The overall objective for the Tulula Wetlands Mitigation Bank has been to restore the functional and structural characteristics of the wetlands. Specific ecological restoration objectives of this Phase I study included: 1) reestablishing site hydrology by realigning the stream channel and filling drainage ditches; 2) recontouring the floodplain by removing spoil that resulted from creation of the golf ponds and dredging of the creek; 3) improving breeding habitat for amphibians by constructing vernal ponds; and 4) reestablishing floodplain and fen plant communities. -

Location The Driftless Area National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1989 for the protection and recovery of the threatened Northern monkshood and endangered Iowa Pleistocene snail. These species occur on a rare habitat type termed algific talus slopes. These are slopes with outflows of cold underground air that provide a glacial relict habitat to which certain species have adapted (see diagram below). The Driftless Area National Wildlife Refuge consists of ten units scattered throughout Allamakee, Clayton, Dubuque, and Jackson Counties in northeast Iowa. Total Refuge acreage is 811 acres with individual units ranging from 6 to 208 acres. Acquisition targets not only the algific slope, but surrounding buffer habitat that includes sinkholes important to air flow to the slope. Acquisition is ongoing, but limited due to insufficient funds. 2. Topography Refuge units are primarily forested and generally consist of steep topography with narrow creek valleys, large rock outcroppings, and karst features. Riparian and grassland habitat also occur on the Refuge. 3. Points of Interest The algific talus slope habitat of the Refuge harbors many unusual and rare plant and land snail species, some of which are also on the state threatened and endangered species list. These areas tend to be scenic with cliffs and rock outcroppings, springs, and coldwater streams. 4. Physical Facilities The Refuge office is located at the McGregor District of the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge, McGregor, Iowa. -
