  • Reading Gender Relations and Sexuality: Preteens Speak Out
    READING GENDER RELATIONS AND SEXUALITY: PRETEENS SPEAK OUT Lyndsay Moffatt & Bonny Norton University of British Columbia Recent research has documented the persistence of unequal gender relations and homophobia in young people’s lives. Feminist post‐structural theories of gender and socio‐cultural theories of learning suggest educators need to understand students’ constructions of gender relations, masculine/feminine desires, and sexuality if they hope to challenge these behaviors. In this article, we examine a diverse group of 47 preteens’ constructions of gender relations, masculine/feminine desires, and sexuality, using a survey, a story from the popular comic Archie, and individual interviews. We found that although participants produced feminist and patriarchal constructions of gender relations, they constructed masculine and feminine sexuality as uniformly heterosexual. Key words: popular culture, feminism, adolescents, discourse analysis Des recherches récentes indiquent la persistance de relations inégales entre les hommes et les femmes et de l’homophobie chez les jeunes. Des théories d’apprentissage poststructuralistes féministes au sujet du genre ainsi que des théories socioculturelles donnent à penser que les pédagogues ont besoin de comprendre les constructions que se font les élèves des relations entre les sexes, des désirs masculins et féminins et de la sexualité s’ils espèrent remettre en question ces comportements.     ABSTRACT "ARCHIE'S GIRLS?" BETTY, VERONICA, AND THE RISE OF AMERICAN YOUTH CULTURE, 1941-1950 by Caroline Elizabeth Johnson This thesis uses the characters of Betty and Veronica of the Archie Comic series to explore the roles of adolescent females during the 1940s in the United States. The author utilizes feminist and art theory as well as relevant literature to argue that the writers of Archie Comics reflect and reify teenage experience through the characters of Betty and Veronica. Themes addressed include labor roles, dating habits, as well as teen involvement in consumer culture. By addressing the role of adolescent experience, the author hopes to expand conversations regarding women during the 1940s to include the impact of youth culture. The author concludes by suggesting Betty and Veronica represent a larger trend in American society regarding the way in which young women are conditioned to think and act in a particular manner via popular culture.     EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Decapitation. Dismemberment. Serial killers. Graphic gore. Hey, Kids! COMICS!! Since the release of The Dark Knight film series and the 22 movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, comic-book characters have become wildly popular in other forms of entertainment, particularly television. But broadcast TV’s representations of comic-book characters are no longer the bright, colorful, and optimistic figures of the past. Children are innately attracted to comic-book characters; but in today’s comic book-based programs, children are being exposed to graphic violence, profanity, dark and intense themes, and other inappropriate content. In this research report, the PTC examined comic book-themed prime-time programming on the maJor broadcast networks during November, February, and May “sweeps” periods from November 2012 through May 2019. Programs examined were Fox’s Gotham; CW’s Arrow, Black Lightning, The Flash, Supergirl, DC’s Legends oF Tomorrow, and Riverdale; and ABC’s Marvel’s Agents oF S.H.I.E.L.D., Marvel’s Agent Carter, and Marvel’s Inhumans. Research data suggest that broadcast television programs based on these comic-book characters, created and intended for children, are increasingly inappropriate and/or unsafe for young viewers. In its research, the PTC found the following during the study period: • In comic book-themed programming with particular appeal to children, young viewers were exposed to over 6,000 incidents of violence, over 500 deaths, and almost 2,000 profanities. • The most violent program was CW’s Arrow. Young viewers witnessed 1,241 acts of violence, including 310 deaths, 280 instances of gun violence, and 26 scenes of people being tortured.

His proposal was accepted with a resounding (i.e., all capital letters) \YES", followed by tears from former and on again/off again girlfriend Betty Cooper and frustration from Archie fans around the world. Betty Cooper, in any ways, represents the all American girl: fair-haired, beautiful. Hell, she's even a cheer leader. She was the one who most people saw spending her life with Archie. Raven-haired Veronica, on the other hand, is the spoiled, arrogant (and smoking hot) foil to Betty. She represented in many ways all that is wrong with contemporary American culture: greed, ambivalence to the plight of others, narcissism. As such, the Blogosphere burst with criticisms of Archie and expressions of despair for what his proposal forebode for the state of contemporary American society.

    “And They Talked Amongst the Dancing Heterosexuals” Queer Teen Televisual Representation in Theory and Practice Adam Weinreb Senior Seminar December 10th, 2019 Weinreb 2 Abstract When watching a teen drama in the contemporary moment, it is hard to avoid seeing depictions of queer identity, as numbers of representation across the televisual landscape are ever-increasing. But, even with increasing statistics, are these characters allowed to function in the same ways as their straight counterparts are? If so, what acts are queer teens allowed to perform on the screen, and what is withheld from reach? This study analyzes queer teens from three televisual texts—Riverdale, The Society, and Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists—and ​ ​ ​ ​ the acts that they are allowed to and forbidden from taking on these shows. Using a combination of representational and close-reading analyses, I elucidate the gaps between the queer and straight teen characters that exist today. These gaps are much smaller than they were mere years ago, and each of the shows analyzed creates significant space for queer teens to act equally in a specific way. However, even with these spaces, the gaps that exist are still significant, with no single show allowing their queer teens to reach the same level as straight teens. This study aims not only to indicate these gaps for scholarly dicussion, but also to implore the television industry to rethink how queer teens are being represented, so that all those out there coming to terms with their identity at such a volatile age can see themselves represented fully and equally on the screen.
