Our setting and the context If this an advert and we were only allowed 1 sentence, we would say: We are a Christian family who worship God, care for another and the local community and reach out to encourage others to know Jesus and his love. We are looking for a curate who wants the opportunity to join us, here in Pakefield, to grow God’s kingdom, through worship, life events, pastoral care, special events and services, discipleship, teaching and outreach into our community. We can offer lots of opportunities for you to learn about parish life, to equip you for your future ministry, as an Incumbent, wherever that might take you. Plus, it is a fabulous place to live! If you want to know more about us than is contained in our profile, please follow us on Facebook or Twitter or visit our Website or YouTube channel or contact our Rector, Sharon, she will be very happy to chat with you. The People… We are very blessed with our amazing teams. There is a tradition of many member ministry here, so that is something that we want to promote and encourage. This extends to our groups and clubs too.

Where we live… Pakefield Benefice comprises of a single parish in East Suffolk in the . We are three miles south of Lowestoft, on the east coast, bisected by the A12. It was a village, but is now a suburb, it still retains a bit of a village feel, especially in the oldest part near the church. It is generally a quiet, peaceful place, with a small industrial and retail estate that includes everything you need. In the village, there are two small supermarkets, a post office and chemist, as well as an excellent takeaway. There are several pubs in the village that all serve excellent food. There are also several cafes and restaurants on the retail park, as well as just north of the parish, along the sea front. 4

Profile: Pakefield Parish Church

About ninety years ago there was severe coastal erosion and about a mile of Pakefield was lost to the sea, including part of the churchyard! The church ended up on the edge of the cliff. Since then a wide shingle beach has reclaimed land, and there is a lovely sandy beach too which is popular with holiday makers. Coastal erosion continues, and although it isn’t directly affecting the church building, it is affecting our parish and several homes are at risk. The population of Pakefield has expanded considerably in the last twenty years so there are now about 2800 homes.

The housing is generally privately owned, varying from large to terraced houses in old Pakefield, there are lots of bungalows built in the 1950’s, and modern houses of various sizes on the estate where the Curate’s house is sited. There is some sheltered housing too. We hold a monthly Holy Communion service there. There are several care homes just outside our parish. There is also holiday accommodation with 2 caravan parks and a holiday park (Pontins) . There is a popular primary and High School in the parish We have excellent relationships with the primary school and lead Collective Worship twice a term (split between key stages 1 and 2). Classes come to the church to learn about Christianity and we have held mock baptism and wedding services with the children. We also hold end of term services in the church and these are fabulous occasions and I’m not sure who has more fun us of the children! (This is the only time they can fit the whole school together in one room). We also have good relationships with the high school and our Children’s and Youth Leader is involved with the mentoring programme there. This is something we want to be able to grow and develop

The church

The building and grounds All Saints and St Margaret’s church, known locally as The church on the cliff, is unique, It dates back to Saxon times with a mention in the doomsday book. It is in fact a pair of semidetached churches, built in the 11th century, each with their own Rector and Patron. By the 1700’s there was one Rector and the dividing wall was demolished. So, there are 2 naves and 2 sanctuaries (neither of which is a lady chapel or side chapel!). The building was hit by an incendiary device in the second world war, and the church lay in ruins until it was rebuilt and re-dedicated in 1950. So, at the beginning of 2020 we celebrated our 70th anniversary of the rededication of the church, with stories from local people who remembered the night the church was on fire.

The internal space is very versatile as it is furnished with chairs which is especially wonderful for Messy Church and Holiday Club and our seasonal Café’s.

We also have a hall with a professional style kitchen and youth lounge (Portacabin). This is where the parish office is too. The hall is busy during the week with church and community groups, from carpet bowls to art group from dog training to keep fit.

As part of reaching into our community we run events, the primary reason is for mission and secondary for fund raising. There is a café run on Friday mornings during Lent, the Summer and for our Patronal Festival of All Saints. We organise events such as our Summer and Christmas fairs, Quiz evenings. Murder Mysteries, as well as treasure hunts. These are all great opportunities for mission through conversations as well as promoting services and the Alpha course.

Profile: Pakefield Parish Church

Pattern of Services We have a growing and active congregation. Like many churches the majority of the congregation is retired, we also attract the newly retired as Pakefield is popular place to retire to. We also attract holiday makers, and we have those who are ‘regulars’ with us over the summer We have a thriving Youth and Children’s programme, with Sunday and Midweek groups.

8am Holy Communion is from Book of Common Prayer (weeks 1&3) or Common Worship Weeks 2&4). We have an average of 18 people attending. It is lovely quiet and calm way to start a Sunday morning. 10.30am services we have Holy Communion, All Age Worship, or Morning Worship and sometimes Baptisms too. This is a lively service with mostly contemporary worship and we have a band. We have an average of 66 people attending plus about 8 children. The children go out to Sunday Club for part of the service but are naturally an integral part of our worshipping family, they love to be involved especially during the All Age worship which is led by our Youth Leader. This service is also live streamed on Facebook at the moment. Our Evening services are a real mixed bag of traditional and informal, with monthly healing services, Evening Prayer, and Monthly Holy Communion. We have an average of 16 attending Our Mid-week Holy Communion service is slowly growing too, we have about 10 attending, as are our Gathering to Worship (an informal service with time for testimony and sung worship) this attracts Christians from other churches too, as well as those who have attended our Alpha courses. The Daily Office (Morning Prayer) is said in church Tuesday to Saturday (our Rector Sharon, has Monday’s off) and we have Evening Prayer once a month, plus during Advent, Lent and Holy Week.

Children’s and Youth Ministries (CYM) Our Children’ and Youth Leader leads an enthusiastic group of volunteers who support her in everything that we do.

For the majority of our Children and Young People Tuesday after school is their church. We have over 40 that regularly come. They range in age from 5 to 18.

Our older youth meet in their lounge known as the Portacabin, We utilise the indoor and outdoor space, as well as the beach!

7

Profile: Pakefield Parish Church

We have a monthly Messy Church and Toddler service (Teddy Edward). There is also a weekly parent/carer and toddler group, that although is independent, is well supported by church members as volunteers. We also run an annual holiday club in the summer holidays.

We encourage the children and young people to learn through play as well as worship and a favourite is our light party with fireworks!

Naturally we celebrate all major festivals with a menu of services to suit our occasional visitors, those wondering what Christianity is all about, and those who are mature in their Christian faith.

We have services especially for our community, as Mission and outreach. For instance We celebrate Harvest Festival , usually in September and Harvest of the Sea, in October, with The Blessing of the Herring This which is held outside, in conjunction with a local pub. It is a wonderful community occasion, with singing hymns, Bible story and prayers. After the blessing we get to eat the freshly caught herring, which re very tasty

Plus, it is always a bit of a giggle as Sharon is vegetarian and can’t stand the smell of fish!!

Other services that we have purely as missional outreach are: Pet service, Christingle, Carols around the tree all of which are well attended by the community.

We hold a pet service most years, and it brings in a menagerie of pets, mostly dogs, but we have had , rabbits, horses, cats and even a chicken!

Our Christingle Service is a wonderful family service, and a really good opportunity to share the Good New of Jesus. The primary School usually provide a choir too …plus the adult that gets the shortest straw gets to be the Christingle!

Carols around the tree, is another name for our nativity service, re as well as having lots of fun with the children dressing up, we can share the true meaning of Christmas with them 8

Profile: Pakefield Parish Church

Remembrance is very well attended, with usually every seat taken, both inside and around the war memorial. The local Uniformed organisations (Scouts/Guides/Cubs/Brownies) attend and parade through Pakefield, from the scout hut This is always a great opportunity to connect with them

The donkey on Palm Sunday, is always a big attraction, and usually encourages children and families to attend.

Not only does this give us an opportunity to share the story of Palm Sunday but also to invite families for Easter Sunday and the egg hunt

Occasional Offices We have regular Baptisms Funerals and Weddings In 2019 there were 13 Baptisms (including 3 adults in the sea), 8 weddings and over 40 Funerals and internments of ashes. 2021 looks like a busy season for weddings with 12 booked in already

You will have an opportunity to gain experience within church, graveside (Woodland, Cemetery and Churchyard and Crematorium funerals, as well burial of ashes in the ground and at sea. We also conduct several memorial services each year, with a ‘services of memories usually in November.

We run a Wedding Preparation Day for couples and encourage them to attend Alpha

We are currently looking at overhauling the way we do Baptism preparation

You will gain valuable experience in these important areas of mission and outreach.

Discipleship and training

In Matthew’s Gospel, in the Great Commission Jesus commands us to spread the good news:

‘Go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely, I am with you always, to the very end of the age.’ (Matthew 28: 19-20)

So, we need to do just this by answering their questions, by inviting those we meet to learn more about God, by nurturing their inquisitiveness,

We do this by offering simple leaflets and Christianity courses such as Start and Alpha We normally run Alpha followed by a discipleship course. We are looking at running Start too. We also offer a whole church Lent group (naturally 2020 has been a bit different).

If we are asking our volunteers to follow God’s calling on their life, then it is vital that they are offered training, so training is offered. We are planning to run further Discipleship and training in 2021 once we are allowed to!

This year (2020) we have run online training for our prayer ministry team, under the umbrella of ‘Gathering to Learn’

We encourage our PCC, authorised and licenced lay workers and Children’s and Youth Team to access conferences and training pertinent to their role

Our Home groups all run slightly differently, and they are encouraged to explore and deepen their faith through a variety of materials.

We naturally access the Diocese Safeguarding Training.

The Incumbent and Ministry Team Training Incumbent: Revd Sharon Lord

I moved here to Pakefield in 2018 with my husband Russell, our 2 cats and 3 chickens. We have 2 grown up children who have flown the nest. Originally, we are from Shropshire, so living by the sea is still a bit of a novelty for us. I grew up in Shrewsbury and attended my parents’ church. I trained as a nurse and then as a midwife. As an adult I attended a large evangelical church in the area and was happy ‘sitting in my pew’. Then in 2005, I had a tap on my shoulder, both physically and spiritually to become more involved. I started helping with the churches youth work and to cut a long story short ended up preaching at a deanery youth service and was given several pictures and words by different people. At New-wine God really spoke to me through Ephesians 3: 14-2. As I reflect on this, I am also drawn to the words that are spoken over us at ordination too: You cannot bear the weight of this calling in your own strength, but only by the grace and power of God. Pray therefore that your heart may daily be enlarged, and your understanding of the Scriptures enlightened. Pray earnestly for the gift of the Holy Spirit.

I find this sentence greatly reassuring, because it is only through the Grace, power, generosity and love of God that I’m able to do the things that I do. Sometimes in ministry we do really mundane things and sometimes we do things that are scary and stressful, and yet God works through both these for his glory. Shortly after this I felt called to ministry, and in 2013 started my theological Training at Cranmer Hall, Durham. I served my Curacy in Burton upon Trent, under 2 Training Incumbents, as my first one retired. I thought I’d be staying in Lichfield Diocese, but God had other ideas, and the advert for Pakefield jumped off the page at me in the Church Times. It is a wonderful parish to be serving in.

If you enjoy ministry in all its fullness, with plenty of variety and challenges, as well as an abundance of blessings perhaps Pakefield is for you!

As your Training Incumbent I will be there to support you, to grow and develop into the priest that God wants you to be. I will be there to guide and support you, and then stand back and let you flourish

When I was a curate, I described the journey from being an Ordinand to an Incumbent as a bit like learning to drive a car. At first, the driving instructor has their feet on the pedals, they have their hand on the gear stick and even the steering wheel. Then as you confidence grows, they take their hands and feet away. Then one day they say you can take your test. And as you learn to drive, perhaps changing gear comes naturally but parallel parking takes a bit longer! But then even when you’ve passed your test, you probably drive your parent’s car, you don’t have to think about the insurance or the MOT, or even the petrol, you just drive. Until one day you get your own car, and suddenly you are responsible for everything! So when you are ordained there will be some things that you are already confident in, there will be things that you are anxious about, there will be things that you’ve never thought about and all of that is okay. We will work together so that by the end of your curacy you will feel confident and be competent in all areas (where ever possible) of ministry to ensure that you have fulfilled the formation criteria and feel ready to fly the Pakefield nest. 11

The Licenced Team

We are blessed to have an amazing team who led our services here and support Sharon with their wisdom and experience.

Although Sharon will take the main role in your training and supervision, especially during your deacon year, you will be able to gain wisdom, knowledge and valuable experience from all of the licenced team. There is a wealth of knowledge between them so use it!

Naturally, you will be working along side them in preparing, leading, preaching and (after priesting) presiding at Holy Communion. As you learn and you gain confidence you will be given areas of responsibility and you may wish to lead a team in a new venture

The whole team usually meet about 6 times a year formally, to plan services and think and pray together. They meet informally too, and support Katey in her studies. There are plans to have a quiet day all together….but it hasn’t quite happened yet! This is something that we want add to our annual calendar as a regular

So let us introduce them:

Katey is our Children and Youth Ministries (CYM) Leader (this is a diocesan funded role whilst she is studying). She is married to Gareth and they have 3 school aged children. She is currently studying Theology at Ridley Hall. She organises and runs our Sunday and Tuesday Clubs, Messy Church, All Age Worship. She has a menagerie of animals at home and is led shepherd for our sheep. She loves living by the sea and you will often find her on the beach with her dogs!

Di retired here in 2012 after 17 years as Rector of Hethersett & the Meltons. A Londoner, “Up the Spurs” were among her earliest words, she cannot now imagine living anywhere other than East Anglia. Prior to theological college she ran a hostel for maladjusted schoolchildren and after five years in two Nottingham parishes spent 11 years as a national Vocations Adviser with Church Pastoral Aid Society, returning to parish ministry a year after being among the first women ordained priest in 1994. A cat lover, she plans to adopt one when she’s stopped travelling the world!

Profile: Pakefield Parish Church

Trudie is a Licensed Lay Reader at our church. She is married to Brian and has a daughter Sophie who is a writer, and a son Nicholas who is a team leader at Homebase, Lowestoft. She was born in Saxon Road within the sound of the church bells and has been a regular worshiper at the church since going on an Alpha course here in 2000. After working as Post Office Clerk for forty-three years she recently changed career and is now working for Suffolk County Council as a Business Support Officer. In her spare time, she loves researching her family history as well as the local history of Pakefield and its church. As a Lay Reader she takes services at the church and organises fund-raising events.

Loretta was licensed as Authorised Worship Assistant for Pakefield Parish Church in July 2020. Loretta moved to the parish in 1993 from Essex after graduating from university and has worked in the Oil and Gas industry for 27 years, currently working in Norwich as a cost engineer. After attending the Alpha course at Pakefield church she was confirmed here in October 2015. Loretta was actively involved as a sides-person, helped with the coffees, serving at Holy Communion and giving bible readings before recently becoming an AWA. Life at home is spent looking after her very loving and adorable two cats: Jack and Sapphire, musical interests, studying and reading literature as well as socialising with family and friends.

Anne is an Authorised Worship Assistant (2013). She has attended Pakefield church all of her life and became an AWA in 2013. She leads and speaks at our Sunday Evening service once or twice a month, as well as the occasional ‘special service’. She enjoys the discipline of working with a specific theme and planning the service around it.

As well as our licenced lay team, we also employ 2 (p/t) administrators, a caretaker and cleaner

Steve is our caretaker and does a fabulous job of ensuring that the hall is ready for our community and church groups. He is also a dab hand with a paint brush! He is married to June, who is also our Church Warden.

Simon is our cleaner. But actually, that is a small part of what he does. He is our drummer too. He is also a volunteer with Messy Church and Teddy Edward and is our main puppeteer.

Sandra is the Church Administrator (p/t) who combines the organisational requirements of her role with that of assisting the busy Rector in the many administrative matters in the Parish. Val is our hall bookings administrator (p/t) , working alongside Sandra our church administrator. Her main role is to manage the hall bookings, and deal with all the enquiries that come our way.

Profile: Pakefield Parish Church

There are others that have leadership roles within our church family. For instance: Churchwardens, PCC members and teams of volunteers that ensure Worship happens Plus a ‘backroom team’ of many dedicated people who care for our buildings and churchyard. For instance: Our Churchyard team are undertaking quite a big project at the moment to re-claim the hedgerows around the churchyard.

Our PCC

Our PCC and Standing committee both meet 6 times a year. As a curate you will be expected to attend when you can.

The Deanery

Pakefield is in the Lothingland Deanery. There are 10 benefices, including town centre to very Rural, with a range of churchmanship and styles of worship. As a stipendiary curate you will be the deanery chapter. They meet monthly, usually one of the Incumbents hosts. The Deanery Synod meets 3 times a year

The Pakefield Sheep It would be remiss of us not to mention our sheep.

We have an elderly Suffolk ram, called Rodney , who can be a bit grumpy sometimes and will baa his annoyance, but is easily bribed with carrots.

Then our little Soay ewes, who joined in August 2020 called Poppy, Skye and Sparkle. They are quite bouncy and can jump over 4 feet if they so wish. Bizarrely, they prefer to eat weeds to grass. They think of Rodney as their bodyguard and are often hiding behind him

They are quite crowd puller as well as keeping the churchyard neat and tidy!

They also have their own Facebook Page! https://www.facebook.com/pakefieldsheep

The Curate

“For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11

We are looking for a curate who will thrive in our parish. Someone who wants to share the good news of Jesus is a variety of ways with those that you will encounter.

We will be able to offer you a breadth and depth of ministry in the Church of , with all its opportunities, the good bits the enjoyable bits and the challenging bits.

The whole point of a curacy is to train you for incumbency. So, we will expect you to get involved in all areas of parish ministry, including administration. Sometimes there will be situations within ministry that push you to the edge of your comfort zone You must be a team player. We have developed an environment where everyone in the staff team is there to both learn and teach, where it is okay to get it wrong and make mistakes and learn from the wisdom in the room.

We understand that you will have had experience in certain things and be a complete novice in others, that is okay. We will be there to support you as you learn new skills and develop old ones, but you must also be able to work on your own and take your own initiative.

We understand that you will come with gifts and talents, that God has given to you. and we want to help you to develop those. It maybe that you feel that God called to a particular outreach or ministry. Tell us about it! We are always open to trying new ideas to build God’s Kingdom here, as well as be good stewards of the ancient building we have been given to look after. Our last Curate had this crazy idea of abseiling off the tower, and here is our lay Reader Trudie doing just that!

We will welcome your family, whatever family is to you. You will be encouraged to ensure you develop a healthy work life balance through taking your holiday and days off, to ensure that you are able to flourish in your ministry. You will have regular supervision and have opportunities to have quiet days You will be supported in any study you are undertaking as part of your IME training phase 2. We are committed to paying your work-related expenses, for instance car mileage.

We will be praying for you as you discern whether we are the right parish for you

Our vision and priorities

‘To God who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine to him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations for ever and ever Amen’ (Ephesians 3: 20-21) We want to be able to build on our existing strengths, as well as explore some new and innovative ways to reach out to our Community. We want to be able to: . Grow our pastoral outreach, by caring for those who are housebound or poorly. This will be achieved by further development of our Pastoral Care Team . Grow our missional outreach through both social and evangelistic events such as the Lent café, ALPHA course and perhaps think about a fresh expression of worship . Encourage and develop our families, children and youth work through services such as Messy Church. our All Age worship and Tuesday Clubs (BG’s, SKIPS, SPLAT). We want to encourage our children on a Sunday by involving them through sharing and taking part in the services. We are committed to supporting our part-time student Children’s and Youth worker, as she continues with her undergraduate studies. . Engage with our schools through collective worship and to try new ways of sharing the Good News of Jesus. For instance: Open the Book and mentoring. . Build on our existing structure of services, whilst being mindful of our diverse fellowship of worship styles. Experimenting with different styles of worship, such as Gathering to Worship, which started in January 2020. . Work collaboratively and develop Lay Leadership. Encourage each other to share our testimonies and good news stories during our sharing time. . Be good stewards of the resources we are given: This includes all our team members who freely give their time, as well as financial donations and fund-raising events that ensure we can care for our beautiful building, as well as caring for the people that enter it. At our PCC away day in 2019 we thought and pondered and prayed about the Diocesan Mission Strategy. We asked our CYM (Children and Youth Ministries) to look at it too. From this we developed our Mission Strategy Workplan, which was evaluated in January 2020. Looking at the things we’d achieved and looking at the things that we need to explore further. Sadly, with Covid-19 it has rather scuppered our plans for 2020. However, it has also opened the doors for new opportunities, new ways of doing mission and evangelism. God has spoken to us through this pandemic in so many ways.

This is what the LORD says –your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: ‘Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? (Isaiah 43: 1, 18-19)
