  • OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN Biography
OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN Biography “I am committed and excited about educating and encouraging women to take a positive role in their breast health.” – Olivia Newton-John Born in Cambridge, England in 1948, the youngest child of Professor Brin Newton-John and Irene, daughter of Nobel Prize winning physicist, Max Born, Olivia moved to Melbourne, Australia with her family when she was five. By the age of fifteen, she had formed an all-girl group called Sol Four. Later that year she won a talent contest on the popular TV show, “Sing, Sing, Sing,” which earned her a trip to London. By 1963, Olivia was appearing on local daytime TV shows and weekly pop music programs in Australia. Olivia cut her first single for Decca Records in 1966, a version of Jackie DeShannon’s "Till You Say You’ll Be Mine." In 1971, she recorded a cover of Bob Dylan’s "If Not For You," co-produced by John Farrar, who she continues to collaborate with today. Her 1973 U.S. album debut, "Let Me Be There," produced her first top ten single of the same name, with Olivia being honored by the Academy Of Country Music as Most Promising Female Vocalist and a Grammy Award as Best Country Vocalist. This proved to be only the beginning of a very exciting career. Her countless successes include three more Grammys, numerous Country Music Awards, American Music Awards and Peoples Choice Awards, five #1 hits including “Physical,” which topped the charts for ten consecutive weeks, and 15 top 10 singles. In 1978, her co-starring role with John Travolta in “Grease” catapulted Olivia into super- stardom.

I can’t imagine a more fitting theme for this year thanRISE UP FOR CHANGE. This has been a challenging year for all of us. At times, it has felt like so much of what GLIDE stands for was under threat due to the health pandemic, economic fallout, and increased racial and social unrest. So many around us are struggling to meet their basic needs, feel isolated or afraid, and question the growing divisions across the nation. Guided by our values, GLIDE has responded by rising up during these difficult times. We see this happening all around us as people choose courage over fear, justice over oppression, compassion over indifference. We see hope in the face of adversity. I am so proud of the entire GLIDE community — our staff, our donors, our volunteers, our partners. We come together every day to ensure those who are most vulnerable get their needs met, achieve stability, and have a voice on their paths to transformation.

Is Gratitude Queen of the Virtues and Ingratitude King of the Vices? Robert A. Emmons Department of Psychology University of California, Davis Draft: Do Not Cite Without Permission Prepared for Yale Center for Faith & Culture consultation on “Joy, Gratitude, and Complaint,” September 8-9, 2017, Yale University 1 “Gratitude is the alpha, the point from which all virtues must begin...it is the heavyweight champion of virtues” –Jonathan Last, The Seven Deadly Virtues It is impossible to envision the good life without gratitude. Gratitude is a virtue with unusual power. It makes life better for self and for others. Awareness of its importance raises inescapable big questions: How gratefully or ungratefully will each of us live our own lives? Why will we choose to do so, and with what effects on ourselves and those around us? Writing in the Notre Dame Journal of Law, Ethics, and Public Policy, Elizabeth Loder (2006) noted “Gratitude affects how a person conceives the world and expects others to behave. It increases interpersonal receptivity. It seeps into one’s being and affects all dispositions pervasively” (p. 176). One-half century earlier, famed sociologist Georg Simmel declared that gratitude is “the moral memory of mankind.” If every grateful action, he went on to say, were suddenly eliminated, society would crumble. Regardless of one’s worldview, faith tradition, or philosophical leaning, gratitude is much admired. A smattering of quotes reveals the power and potential of this virtue: “Whatever you are in search of—peace of mind, prosperity, health, love—it is waiting for you if only you are willing to receive it with an open and grateful heart” (Breathnach, 1996).
