Summer Schoo l officially begins with registration in the E. A . Diddle Arena at 8:00 a. m. on Monday, June 16.

Sabbatical leaves have been granted to five members of the Western faculty for 1969- 70. Recipients are Carlton Jackson (History); Jim Wayne Miller (Foreign Languages); H . E . Shadowen (Biology); Joseph Stokes (Mathematics); and Hugh T h omason (Government) . All leaves are for the second semester except Dr. Sh adowen's w h ich will be for the summer s of 1969- 70. These are the first l eaves g r anted unde r the University's new Sabbatical Leave Program.

PUBLICATIONS

"The World and Thomas Merton" by Dr. James T. BAKER (History) will appear in the summe r e dition of Continuum. Magazine, the official journal of St. Xavier College in Chicago. Continuum has dedicated th e e ntire issue to a study of the life and thought of Thomas Merton, O. C. S. 0., formerly of G ethsemani Abbey n ear Bardstown, Kentucky.

BOAZ, Dr. Holland E. (Industrial Education) has pre pared a bibliography called An Annotated Bibliography on History, Philosophy, and Trends in Industrial Education, 1967-68. Two copies have been placed in the Margie Helm Library collection.

BRYANT, Dr. Clifton D. (Head, Sociology and Anthropo logy) and Dr. Fuad G. BAALI (Sociol ogy and Anthropology) completed Introductory Sociology and the Colle ge Scene: Selected Readings which will be published by Rand McNally in January, 1970.

CANGEMI, Mr. J oseph P. (Ps y chology) r ecently has had published the following articles: "Some Students Should Drop Out of School," in The Counsel o r, by the Western New York Personnel and Guidance Association; "The Effects of Organized Camp E x p e riences on the Perception of Self and Society among a Group of Potential School Dropo uts, " by Archivos Panarnenos de Psicologia, at the National University o f Panam.a; and "Program de Evaluacion Industrial, II by Archivos Paname nos de Psicol ogia, at the National University of Panama.

GRAY, Dr. Elmer (Agriculture) is co-author of an article entitled "Relation of Hydrocyanic Acid Potential of Leaf Samples to That of Whole Plants of Sorghum" which was published in the March-April issue of Agronomy Journal.

"The Lion of White Hall" by Dr. Lowell H. HARRISON (History) was published in the May issue of American History Illustrated.

SCHMIDT, Mr. Frank (Psychology) has been notified that his study "Distortion of Drivers' Estimates of Automobile Speed as a Funtion of Speed Adaptation" has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Applied Psychology. Dr. Joseph Tiffin of Purdue University is co- author of the study.

MlSCELLANEOUS FACULTY ACTIVITIES

ANDERSON , Dr. Mable B. (Elementary Education) was el ected to the Board of Directors for the National Council on Family Relations; has been appointed by the KEA President to serve on a kindergarten committee for KEA to assist in preparing a bill for presentation to the 1970 Legislature; has accepted the invitation of the Executive Board of the As sociation for Childhood Edu cation International to serve as a member of the Teacher Education Cornrnittee for 1969-72; and served as a Study Group leader at the Association for Child­ h ood Education International in Houston, Texas, on April 7-11.

Dr. A. L. APPLEGATE and Mr. Mack HOUSTON (Biology) attended the Isotopes Application Conference sponsored by the United States Atomic Ene rgy Commission at Gatlinburg, Tennessee, on April 27-30.

Drs . Fuad BAAL!, Clifton BRYANT, John REED, James WITTMAN, and Raytha YOKLEY and Messrs. Hart NELSEN, Vernon WHITE, and Robert WHITTEN (Sociology and Anthropology) attende d the annual m eeting of the Southern Sociological Society in New Orleans on April 9 -12. Dr . BRYANT was chairman of a section of papers entitled "Sociological Potpourri. II Dr. YOKLEY was chairman of a section of papers entitled: IICollective Behavior: Frames of Reference and Techniques of Confrontation. " Mr. NELSEN and Dr. YOKLEY read a paper entitled "Church Statements and Members' Attitudes Toward Civil Rights." Dr. REED read a paper entitled "Lawyers, Clients and Social Engineering. BRENNER, Dr. Kenneth W. (Secondary Education) attended the Teacher Corps Directors' Conference in Washington, D. C., on April 21-23 and served as consultant to the Teacher Corps program at the University of Southern Mississippi, Hattiesburg, Mississippi, on May 8-10.

BROWN, Dr. C. P . (Head, Department of Foreign Languages) and the following members of the Foreign Language D epartInent attended the University of Kentu cky Foreign Languages Conference at Lexington on April 25-26: Drs. BURKEEN, Dr. Emmett D. (Director, Counselor Education) was named President-elect of the Kentucky Personnel and Guidance Association at the meeting of the association during KEA in Louisville; spoke to students and faculty of Central City High School concerning talent identification on April 22; to students and faculty of North Hardin High School, Vine Grove, Kentucky, concerning "Creativity as a Talentll on April 23; to students and faculty of Highland Junior High School, Louisville, on May 7 and spoke to faculty, students and parents at Barrett Junior High School, Louisville, on May 8. He also delivered the commencement address at Hart County High on May 15 and at Metcalf County High School on May 29 and addressed the Honors Banquet for Caverna High School at the Holiday Inn, Horse Cave, Kentucky, on May 16. He has been appointed to serve as chairman of a state-wide cOlTllnittee to r evise the State Department of Education bulletin on Guidance Services.

Dr. Franklin CONLEY, Mr. Arvid VAN DYKE and Mr. William WILKINS (Industrial Education) attended the annual Kentucky-Tennessee Industrial Education Association meeting at Austin Peay State University, Clarksville, Tennessee, on May 2-3. Dr. CONLEY served on a panel discussing "Problems Arising from Growth and Change in College and University Department of Industrial Education. "

ELLIOT, Dr. Larry P. (Biology) attended the annual American Society for Microbiology at Miami Beach, Florida, on May 4-9.

ENGLEBRIGHT, Dr. Curtis L. (Elementary Education) spoke to the state convention of the Kentucky Council of the International Reading Association at Owensboro on the topic "Dyslexia -- Fact or Fiction ?" on May 10; and he has been appointed to the committee on evaluating curriculum guides by the National Council of Teachers of English.

Dr. Eugene EVANS and Messrs George NETTS and Robert OPPITZ (Business Administration) attended the convention of the Midwest Busines s Administration Association in Chicago on April 17-19.

GIBSON, Mrs. Lurene (Elementary Education) attended the Mid-Atlantic Conference for Head Start at the University of Maryland on April 17-19.

HARRISON, Dr. Lowell H. (History) read a paper entitled "Adobe Walls, Frontier Enterprise" at the annual meeting of the Texas State Historical Association on May 9.

Drs. David R. HARTMAN (Chemistry) and Frank B. TOMAN (Biology) attended the annual meetings of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology in Atlantic City, New Jersey, on April 13-18.

HA TCHER, Dr. Paul G. (Dean, Potter College of Liberal Arts) and Dr. Carol P. BROWN (Head, Department of Foreign Languages). as representatives of President Kelly Thompson, attended the International Programs Committee of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities at Memphis State University, Memphis, Tennessee, on March 29. -6-

Dr. C. T. HAYS and Messrs Norris THOMAS and Rodney VEITSCHEGGER (Accounting) attended the meeting of the Kentucky Society of Certified Public Accountants at Ken Lake Hotel near Murray, Kentucky, on April 23 . Dr . HA YS has been appointed Chairman of the Kentucky Society of Certified P u blic Accounts Cotnmittee on Relations with Colleges and Universities for the second consecutive year and will serve the Society during the forthcoming year as a member of both the Management Services Com.rnittee and the Practice Review Board.

Drs. Norman W. HUNTER, Wayne H. KELLER, and Lowell W. SHANK (Chemistry) attended the Southeast Sectional meeting of the American Ch emical Society at in Nashville, Tennessee, on April 24.

INMAN, Mr . Thomas H. (Office Administration) attended a committee meeting · for television teaching in busines 5 education in the state of Kentucky at Frankfort on May 16-17.

JONES, Dr. John W. (Physical Education, Health and Recreation) attended the Kentucky Association for Health, Physical Education, and Recreation meeti ng of the KEA in Louisville on April 10 .

Misses Leigh KIEFFER, Midge LOWREY, a nd Dr . William H. SOLLE Y (Physic al Education, Health. and Recreation) served as consultants to Butler County in evaluating Title I Elementary School Physical Education Programs on Ap r il 15 and 18.

LONG, ..I!r. Joseph D . (Teacher Corps Program) attended the Teacher Corp s Directors' Conference in Washington, D . C., on April 21-23.

MILLER, Dr. Jim Wayne (Foreign Languages) gave a reading with comments at Georgetown College for the student assembly on April 8 . It was sponsored by the English Honor Society as part of the college's week- long Fine A r ts Festival. Dr. Miller gave another r e a ding with comment s at Cath erine Sp alding College, Louisville, in connection with Media '69, the college's Fine Arts Festival; and he will be included in the International Who's Who in Poetry to be published in London, England, in January , 1970 and in the Directory of Young American Authors, Robert Day and Allan Wagenheim, editors, published at Fort Hays, Kansas. The directory includes essential biograph ical information about the authors; a selected bibliogr aphy of works; reviews and critiques of work; and information concerning the conditions under which authors will m ake public appearances, readings, l ectures, etc.

NASH, Dr. Ronald (Head, Philosophy and Religion) attended the annual meeting of the American Philosophical Association, Western Division, in Cleveland, Ohio, on May 1- 3.

NEAL, Miss Julia (Director, Kentucky Library) was the luncheon speaker at the Lexington chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma at Shake rtoWD, Pleasant Hill, Kentucky, on April 26. -7-

NEAT, Dr . Donald R. (History) attended ses sions of the Southern Baptist Historical Commission and Historical Society in Nashville, Tennessee, on April 21-23 .

NIVA, Mr. George (Physical Education, Health, and Recreation) was appointed visiting lecturer in Safety and Driver Education at the University of Illinois for July 24 - August R. He was elected Vice President of Kentucky Driver and Traffic Safety Education Association for 1969-70.

OAKES, Mr. John Warren (Art) had a painting selected for inclusion in IIMay 24, 69,11 a biennial painting competition open to artists in the United States and exhibited at Purdue University, Lafayette, Indiana. A drawing by Mr . Oakes was exhibited in the Berea Bie nnial Drawing Exhibition, . Berea, Kentucky.

PAGE, Dr . Tate C . (Dean, College of Education) addressed honor students of Corbin High School at the Corbin Woman's Club banquet on April 18; introduced President Kelly Thompson to Cooperating Teachers at the banquet h eld in the Student Center on April 25; addressed student body at Western High Sch ool in Louisville on April 30; welcomed the participants of t h e NDEA Disadvantaged Institute at the Garrett Student Center on May 10; gave commencement address at Leitchfield High School on May 15; and attended th e s pring election of the Executive Committee of the Central Midwestern Regional Educational Laboratory, Inc., Carbondale, illinois, on May 23.

PARK, M r s. Juanita K. (Elementary Education and Training School) attended the Kentucky Conference on Innovations in Education at Dickey Hall, Univer sity of Kentucky, on May 20-22.

RASDALL, Mrs. Joyce (Home Economics) was elected Secretary of the Bluegrass Chapter of the Electrical Women's Round Table at the May 20 meeting in Bowling Green.

Drs. Lowell W. SHANK and Norman W. HUNTER (Chemistry) attended the Ch emistry Instructional Media Workshop at Meramec Community College in St. Louis, Missouri, on March 31- April 2.

Drs. Vernon Lee SHEELEY and Emmett D . BURKEEN and Mr . James McKEE (Counselor Education) attended the American Personnel and Guidance Association con vention in Las Vegas, Nevada, on March 29- April 3 .

Invited as speakers at the meeting o f the Kentucky Association of Physics Teach ers at the K. E. A. Convention were Dr. Frank SIX (Head, Physics and Astr onomy) and Mr. Floyd CARTER (Ph ysics and Astronomy). SOLLEY, Dr. William H. (Head of Physical Education, Health, and Recreation) attended the National Convention of the American Association for Health. Physical Education, and Recreation in Boston, Massachusetts, on April 10 - 12. While in attendance, he participated in special meetings of the Research Council and the North American Society for Sports Medicine in addition to meetings of the National Convention. He has been appointed chairman of the Convention Evaluating Cornrnittee of the Southern Association for He alth, Physical Education, and Recreation, to meet in Columbia, South Carolina, in the spring of 1970.

STORER, Dr. Walter, Mrs. Mania RITTER, and Mr . R . Thurston TAYLOR (Foreign Languages) administered the National French Contest, under the auspices of the Am.erican Association of Teachers of French, for night school students in the Western service area on April 19.

TA TE, Mr. Boyce D. (Director, Engineering Technology) attended the South­ eastern Section meeting of the American Society for Engineering Education at Miami, Florida, on April 16-18. He was appointed a member of the Board of Directors of the Technical Institute Division Unit for 1969-70.

THOMPSON, Dr. Kelly (President) atte nded the inauguration of Dr. M. G. Scarlett as President of Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, on May 1.

Miss Sara TYLER (Director, Library Services), Mrs. William SOLLEY (Margie Helm Library). and Mis s Julia NEAL (Director, Kentucky Library) attended the dedication of the Princeton-Caldwell County Library facilities, Princeton, Kentucky, on April 11.

VELEZ, Dr. Joseph, assisted by Mrs. Rita CHANDLER (Foreign Languages) administered the National Spanish Exam.ination. under the auspices of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portugese, for high school students in the Western service area on March 22.

Slides of wall hangings and rugs woven by Miss Lysbeth WALLACE (Art) will be projected on large screens at the Fifth National Conference of The American Craftsmen's Council, University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, on June 7-11.

WHITE, Mr. Vernon (Sociology and Anthropology) will be listed in the 1968-69 edition of Personalities of the South, a book containing the biographies of governors,. senators, representatives, and other selected citizens from the fifteen southern states .

WILKERSON, Mr. C. Manuel (Chemistry) will be studying in the "Research Participationll program. at Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, on June 9 -August IS.

WILSON, Dr. Gordon, Jr. (Head, Department of Chemistry) attended the 157th National American Chemical Society Meeting in Minneapolis, Minnesota, as Councilor for The Nashville Section, ACS, on April 13-16. He r e presented The American Chemical Society at the inauguration of Dr. M. G. Scarlett as President of Middle Tennessee State University at Murfreesboro, on May 1. -9-

WILSON, Dr. O. J. (Director, Institutional Research) attended the meetings of the Association for Institutional Research in Chicago on May 5- 8 . He served as chairman of Seminar 2 which discussed "Who Benefits from Cost- Benefit Analysis ?" on May 6. He attended the meeting of the Kentucky Partners of the Alliance in Louisville on May 16 .

WURSTER, Mr . Bob (Foreign Student Adviser) attended the National Association for Foreign Student Affairs in Boston, Massachusetts, on April 29-May 3.

The theme of the conference was "Internationalization of Higher Education. \I Mr . Wurster was re- elected S e cretary and Treasurer of the Kentucky Linguistic Society for 1969- 70.

YUNGBLUTH. Dr . Alan (Biology) attended a meeting of the directors of National Science Foundation In-Service Institutes for high school teachers and supervisors of science and mathematic s in Washington, D. C., on April 25-26. He attended the L. J. Stadle r M e morial Symposium in Basic Genetics at the University of Missouri, Colwnbia, Missouri, on May 10.
