The Works of Mercy have been a part of Church tradition for a long time. They were formalized in the Middle Ages but Church Fathers have discussed them since the beginning. The Lord Himself speaks of them in the famous parable where He puts the sheep at His right and the goats at His left. He speaks of the Corporal Works of Mercy and says of those who do them for others (the sheep), “Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me,” but to those who do not (the goats), “Then he will say to those at his left hand, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his an- gels.” (Matthew 25:40-41).

There are seven Corporal Works of Mercy, described by Christ in chapter 25 of Matthew: feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless, visit the sick, visit those in prison, and bury the dead. These seven acts are ways we, in imitating Christ, should treat others and can minister to the corporal needs of our neighbors. Sometimes, in both the Christian world and the secular, there is less focus on positive precepts like the works of mercy than there is on the negative precepts of the Church; the thou shalt not’s. But for the most part, the works of mercy are also obligatory. Christ says to those who do not do them to the least of His brethren they are to depart into the eternal punishment while those who do go to eternal life.

Over the next seven weeks we will look at the best ways to carry out these works that Jesus has given to us so we can corporally comfort and aid one another by looking at the Scriptural foundations of each work and how certain have modeled them. SAINTS IN TRAINING Formation for young children learning the Faith to become saints

Jesus shows Mercy and Love to Others CORPORAL WORKS of MERCY

“Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” (Matthew 16:24-25). The corporal works of mercy focus on the bodily needs of our neighbors. “They respond to the basic needs of humanity as we journey together through this life” (USCCB). The word corporal means “having to do with the body.”

During this series we will look at how we can follow Jesus, loving others as He did. Jesus shows mercy by how He treats others--His mercy is an action. He calls us to do the same.

The corporal works of mercy are:

SAINTS OF THE WEEK Sunday, September 27: Bl. Brother Scubilionis Rousseau—Confessor Bl. Jean Bernard “Scubilionis” Rousseau was born in the village of Burgundy, France on March 22, 1797. After serving as a catechist, he joined the Christian Brothers of Paris in 1822 where he took on the name Scubilionis. The next ten years of his life were spent working as an elementary teacher with the order. In 1833, Scubilionis was assigned to teach slaves on Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean where he labored for the final 34 years of his life. He continued to teach the people when they received their freedom in 1848. Monday, September 28: St. Domingo Ibanez de Erquicia—Martyr St. Domingo Ibanez was born in Régil, Spain in February 1589. He became a member of the Dominican Order in 1605 and six years later set off for the Philippines where he worked as a missionary. After serving for a time as a professor of theology at the Colegio de Santo Tomas, he went to Japan in 1623 to minister to the Christians there during a period of intense persecu- tion. He was aided in these efforts by St. Francis Shoyemon. In July 1633, Domingo was ar- rested and sent to Nagasaki where he was martyred for the Faith.

Tuesday, September 29: Bl. Richard Rolle de Hampole—Hermit and Mystic Bl. Richard Rolle was born in Thornton, England around the year 1300. After receiving a strong education at Oxford and Paris, he devoted his life to God and became a hermit, resid- ing on the estate of his friend, John Dalton in Pickering. He later moved to Hampole where he became spiritual advisor for a convent of Cistercian nuns. Richard was famous for his writ- ings on the Faith, and was among the first to pen religious works in the vernacular. He wrote numerous epistles, commentaries and treatises. Wednesday, September 30: St. —Confessor and Doctor St. Jerome was born in Stridon, Dalmatia in the year 342. At 12 years of age, he traveled to Rome to study Latin and Greek. While there, he fell into a sinful life chasing after women. Jerome’s friend, Bonosus, helped him to convert to Christianity, and he was baptized in 366 by Liberius. After his baptism, Jerome spent four years living in the de- sert of Chalcis in Syria with Abbot Theodosius, where he studied Hebrew. At the encouragement of Pope St. Damasus, Jerome was ordained a priest. He traveled back to Rome where he served as the Pope’s secretary. Following the death of St. Damasus, he moved to Bethlehem where he spent his remaining years. While there, Jerome wrote numerous scriptural works, combated heresies (such as defending the virginity of Our Lady), and translated the Bible into Latin.

Thursday, October 1: St. Ralph Crockett—Martyr St. Ralph Crockett was born in Barton on the Hill, England sometime during the early 16th century. He received his education at Christ College, Cambridge and Gloucester hall before becoming a teacher. Ralph abandoned his teaching position and traveled to Reims, France where he was ordained to the priesthood in 1586. He returned to his native England to help bring people back to the Catholic Faith following the Reformation. Ralph was arrested along with Bl. and placed in a London prison for two and a half years. Following the Spanish Ar- mada, Ralph and Edward were scapegoated for what transpired and received martyrdom in Chichester by being hanged, drawn and quartered on October 1, 1588. Friday, October 2: St. Leodegarius—Bishop and Martyr St. Leodegarius was born to a noble family in Autun, France around the year 615. He received his education at Poitiers and was elected Abbot of St. Maxentius monastery in 653. Following the death of King Clovis II, Leodegarius was summoned by his widow, Queen Bathildes, to serve in the royal court assisting with governance and teaching her children. He was appointed Bishop of Autun in 659. In 679, Leodegarius ran afoul of Erchinoald, who had him arrested, exiled, blinded and ultimately beheaded on October 2, 679. Saturday, October 3: Sts. Ewald the Dark and Ewald the Fair—Martyrs Ewald the Dark and Ewald the Fair were brothers who had the same name that were born some- time in the seventh century in Northumbria. They were educated in Ireland and became Benedic- tine priests. Together with Willibrord, the men traveled to to Frisia, Netherlands to preach the Catholic Faith. They later went to Westphalia, Germany where they resided with a local lord. Some pagans in the area feared that they might try to convert the lord and spread Christianity, so they captured the Ewald brothers and had them put to death by the sword. BECOME A PARISHIONER Church membership is an obligation of discipleship and love that derives from being united with Christ. At the Cathedral, active membership is a requirement for the celebration of a marriage or baptism, for one to be eligible to be a Godparent or Conformation sponsor, and for special benefits such as tuition subsidy at a Catholic school. There are certain minimum re- quirements for parish membership called the precepts of the Church. The following are three of those precepts and how we COLLECTION FOR SEPT 20, 2019 look upon them in relation to parish membership.
