PETER IMES General Manager ZACK PLAIR, Managing Editor BETH PROFFITT Advertising Director The MICHAEL FLOYD Circulation/Production Manager Opinion Dispatch MARY ANN HARDY Controller OUR VIEW Taking the fight to Parkinson’s Tuesday at the Columbus Rotary Club, the Frank P. Phillips YMCA showed off its most recent innovation in its decade-long program to help local residents who suffer from Parkinson’s Disease. In addition to its other classes, The Y now offers no-con- tact boxing as a treatment designed to slow the advance of the progressive neurological disorder that robs sufferers of their motor skills. Parkinson’s patient Gina Kim and her husband, Gill, staged a demonstration. Gina — donned in pink boxing gloves — delivered a series of jabs and punches to the pad Gill held. The boxing demonstration is a form of treatment, but we believe it is also a pretty good metaphor for how some Parkinson’s sufferers are approaching their disease. For earlier generations, Parkinson’s meant a grim, steady and unavoidable decline. But today’s patients are fighting back — literally. That fight began locally when Rotary member Wesley Platt made a trip to Japan about a dozen years ago to a Rota- ry meeting. While there, Platt learned of an aquatic exercise program for Parkinson’s sufferers. He thought it might be a good treatment back home where he had friends who were suffering from the disease. He brought the idea home, first to the Rotary Club and then to The Y. The Rotary and The Y teamed together to launch the program. The Y’s aquatics program has been running for a dozen years. Two years ago, a spin class was added. Now, there is no-contact boxing. Over the life of the Y programs, more than 30 local Parkinson’s sufferers have benefited from these classes and the message it sends: You don’t have to take Parkin- son’s Disease sitting down. While there may not yet be a cure, treatments such as these can slow the progress of the disease. As a result, patients are living longer, better, more active lives. We are grateful to the Rotary Club, especially Platt as well as current Y Director Andy Boyd and Stephanie Gib- son, who is in charge of the Parkinson’s program, for their unwavering support of this program. But we are most grateful to those local Parkinson’s suffer- ers who participate in this classes. Their fighting spirit and courage in the face of a cruel disease is an inspiration.

AMERICAN LIFE IN POETRY

BY TED KOOSER U.S. Poet Laureate

Here’s a fine poem about two generations of husbands, by Pauletta Hansel of Ohio. Husbands My mother likes a man who works. She likes my husband’s muddy knees, grass stains on the cuffs. She loved my father, though when weekends came he’d sleep till nine and would not lift his eyes up from the page to move the feet she’d vacuum under. On Saturdays my husband digs the holes for her new roses, softening the clay with peat and compost. He changes bulbs she can no longer reach and understands the inside of her toaster. My father’s feet would carry him from chair to bookshelf, back again till Monday came. My mother likes to tell my husband sit down in this chair and put your feet up.

HONOLULU — Hawaii is suing auto manufac- turers Ford, Nissan and Toyota over air bags that can spew shrapnel when they deploy. The complaint filed Wednesday says the man- ufacturers knew or should have known for more than a decade that air bags installed in their cars posed serious and sometimes fatal danger. The automakers used air bags made by Jap- anese manufacturer Takata. At least 16 people have been killed worldwide and more than 180 have been injured because of the defect, which led to the largest automotive recall in U.S. history.
