Brady, Brees Could Trade Hallowed Record During Game As Nfl Kicks Off Season’S Second Half FOR USE AS DESIRED 11/3/20 BRADY, BREES COULD TRADE HALLOWED RECORD DURING GAME AS NFL KICKS OFF SEASON’S SECOND HALF The NFL’s trade deadline is today. But the trading of the league’s record for the most career touchdown passes could continue for the rest of the season. Tampa Bay quarterback TOM BRADY (561) and New Orleans quarterback DREW BREES (560) rank first and second, respectively, and could exchange the record multiple times in the same game on Sunday Night Football when the Saints travel to meet the Buccaneers (8:20 PM ET, NBC). In one of the more exciting chases in sports history, the two quarterbacks this season have already traded the record three times – all in the past two weeks. In Week 8, Brees held the mark for 28 hours before Brady surpassed him again on Monday Night Football against the Giants. Since Pro Football Hall of Famer BOBBY LAYNE surpassed Pro Football Hall of Famer SAMMY BAUGH on Sept. 23, 1962, nine players have held the all-time passing touchdowns mark. Baugh, who served as a key catalyst in evolving the forward pass into more of a staple of NFL offenses, became the all-time leader in 1943. Until Brees and Brady engaged in their chase, the shortest amount of time any player held the mark in the modern era was Layne, who spent one year and 356 days in the lead until Pro Football Hall of Famer Y.A. TITTLE captured it in 1963. He’s on pace to throw his most touchdown passes since leading the league with 50 in 2007. Brees, meanwhile, leads all qualified passers in completion percentage (73.1) and is on pace to become the third player ever to lead the league in that category in at least four consecutive seasons, joining Pro Football Hall of Famers LEN DAWSON (six straight years, 1964-69) and STEVE YOUNG (four straight years, 1994-97). SPEAKING OF LEAD CHANGES: NFL games this past weekend produced 23 lead changes, or 1.6 per game on average. Two games – narrow wins by Pittsburgh and Tampa Bay – had four lead changes. Seven of the 14 games in Week 8 were within one score on the last possession. The MINNESOTA VIKINGS, one of the teams that prevailed in a close game in Week 8, host the DETROIT LIONS on Sunday (1:00 PM ET, CBS). Last week, Vikings running back DALVIN COOK became the fifth player in the Super Bowl era with at least 200 scrimmage yards, three rushing touchdowns and a receiving touchdown in a single game, joining SHAUN ALEXANDER (Week 4, 2002), CLINTON PORTIS (Week 15, 2002), FRED TAYLOR (Week 12, 2000) and Pro Football Hall of Famer MARSHALL FAULK (Week 7, 2002). COMEBACKS ARE IN STYLE: In NFL annals, 2020 is one of only two seasons in which at least one team has come back to win after erasing a deficit of at least 13 points in each of the first eight weeks. It also happened in 2015. Additionally, at least one team has overcome a deficit of 16-or-more points to win in seven of the first eight weeks of the 2020 season. There have been 26 games in which a team has overcome a deficit of at least 10 points to win, tied for the most such games through Week 8 in NFL history. Only the 1987 season (also 26 games) had as many. In three games this year, including the Broncos’ 21-point comeback win in Week 8, a team has erased a deficit of at least 20 points to win. Only 2011 (five) and 1999 (four) have had more such comebacks through eight weeks. FIRST EPISODE OF MURRAY-TAGOVAILOA ON TAP: Returning from their bye, the ARIZONA CARDINALS on Sunday host the MIAMI DOLPHINS (4:25 PM ET, CBS) in a matchup of young quarterbacks. The Dolphins’ TUA TAGOVAILOA, who won his first career start last week, plays his first NFL road game. In Week 7, Arizona’s KYLER MURRAY became the first player in NFL history with at least 350 passing yards, three passing touchdowns, 50 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown in a single game. Miami’s defense is allowing 18.6 points per game, the fewest in the NFL this season. With 13 takeaways, the Dolphins have 1.9 takeaways per game, tied for second in the NFL behind Seattle (2.0). Cornerback XAVIEN HOWARD, tied for the NFL lead with four interceptions, is one of four Miami players with an interception this season, including defensive tackle CHRISTIAN WILKINS. Defensive end EMMANUEL OGBAH leads the team and ranks tied for third in the AFC with a career-best six sacks. Arizona’s DEANDRE HOPKINS leads the NFL in both receptions (57) and receiving yards (704). GROUNDING OUT PAYDIRT: NFL teams have combined for 245 rushing touchdowns this season, the most through eight weeks in league history. The SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS (14) and ARIZONA CARDINALS (12) lead the league in the category, followed by the LOS ANGELES RAMS (11) and MINNESOTA VIKINGS (11). The NFL’s single-season record is 487 rushing touchdowns in 1979. Rookies have scored 35 of those rushing touchdowns, led by three players with four apiece: Washington’s ANTONIO GIBSON, Jacksonville’s JAMES ROBINSON and Detroit’s DEANDRE SWIFT. Minnesota’s DALVIN COOK (10) leads the league in rushing touchdowns, followed by the Falcons’ TODD GURLEY (8) and the Titans’ DERRICK HENRY (8). Cook’s 10 rushing touchdowns in his first six games this season are tied for the fourth-most by a player in his first six games of a season in NFL history. Only Pro Football Hall of Famers JIM BROWN (14 in 1958) and EMMITT SMITH (11 in 1995) as well as SHAUN ALEXANDER (12 in 2005) had more. In addition, NFL games are averaging 238.4 rushing yards through eight weeks this season. That’s the highest mark in 32 years, since NFL teams averaged 240.3 rushing yards per game through eight weeks in 1988. Among players who have appeared in at least four games this season, Henry leads the NFL with 110.7 rushing yards per game, followed by Cook (108.7). MOVING BACK THE CLOCKS: The NFL’s lone undefeated team, the PITTSBURGH STEELERS, travels to play the DALLAS COWBOYS on Sunday (4:25 PM ET, CBS) in a rematch of three prior Super Bowls (X, XIII, XXX). The Steelers (7-0) are off to their best start since 1978. A franchise that has won six Super bowls, tied with New England for the most in NFL history, can achieve its best start ever with a win on Sunday. Pittsburgh head coach MIKE TOMLIN, who took the reins of the Steelers in 2007, has never had a losing season. With a win on Sunday, Tomlin can tie the NFL record held by MARTY SCHOTTENHEIMER (14 seasons, 1984- 97) by beginning his career with 14 consecutive seasons with a record of .500 or better. Pro Football Hall of Famers DON SHULA (13 from 1963-75), GEORGE ALLEN (12 from 1966-77) and CURLY LAMBEAU (12 from 1921-32) are the only other coaches in NFL history without a losing season over at least their first 12 years. The Steelers have 30 sacks and 10 interceptions this season and are the fourth team since 1990 with at least 30 sacks and 10 interceptions in their first seven games of a season, joining the 2019 CAROLINA PANTHERS, 2017 JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS and 2013 KANSAS CITY CHIEFS. ROOKIES ARE FINDING END ZONE: The DENVER BRONCOS travel to meet the ATLANTA FALCONS on Sunday (1:00 PM ET, CBS) in a rematch of Super Bowl XXXIII, the last NFL game played in the Hall of Fame career of JOHN ELWAY, now the Broncos’ president of football operations and general manager. Last week, current Broncos quarterback DREW LOCK threw three fourth-quarter touchdowns, including a 1-yard strike to rookie KJ HAMLER with no time remaining, to win in thrilling fashion. Hamler is one of 36 NFL rookies this season with at least one scrimmage touchdown. CHARM CITY CONNECTIONS: The INDIANAPOLIS COLTS, who played in Baltimore from 1953-83, host the BALTIMORE RAVENS on Sunday (1:00 PM ET, CBS). The two franchises have combined for four Super Bowl titles. Rushing is deeply woven into each franchise’s DNA, and this season is no different. The Ravens enter Sunday’s game leading the NFL with 178.7 rushing yards per game while the Colts’ rushing defense ranks second in the league, allowing 79.9 yards on the ground per game.

Defensively, he recorded 203 tackles in his senior season, 97 of them solo and 55 of them for a loss. In addition, he racked up 10 sacks and forced 14 fumbles, one of which he returned 75 yards for a touchdown in Loveland’s 50-0 state semifinal victory. • THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol
THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 7, No. 5 (1985) THE 1920s ALL-PROS IN RETROSPECT By Bob Carroll Arguments over who was the best tackle – quarterback – placekicker – water boy – will never cease. Nor should they. They're half the fun. But those that try to rank a player in the 1980s against one from the 1940s border on the absurd. Different conditions produce different results. The game is different in 1985 from that played even in 1970. Nevertheless, you'd think we could reach some kind of agreement as to the best players of a given decade. Well, you'd also think we could conquer the common cold. Conditions change quite a bit even in a ten-year span. Pro football grew up a lot in the 1920s. All things considered, it's probably safe to say the quality of play was better in 1929 than in 1920, but don't bet the mortgage. The most-widely published attempt to identify the best players of the 1920s was that chosen by the Pro Football Hall of Fame Selection Committee in celebration of the NFL's first 50 years. They selected the following 18-man roster: E: Guy Chamberlin C: George Trafton Lavie Dilweg B: Jim Conzelman George Halas Paddy Driscoll T: Ed Healey Red Grange Wilbur Henry Joe Guyon Cal Hubbard Curly Lambeau Steve Owen Ernie Nevers G: Hunk Anderson Jim Thorpe Walt Kiesling Mike Michalske Three things about this roster are striking. First, the selectors leaned heavily on men already enshrined in the Hall of Fame. There's logic to that, of course, but the scary part is that it looks like they didn't do much original research.

The addition of a third Wild Card team in each conference this season and the subsequent expansion of the playoffs has resulted in a Super Wild Card Weekend of NFL action. For the first time ever, there will be three games on Saturday, January 9, and three games on Sunday, January 10, to be played at 1:05 p.m., 4:40 p.m., and 8:15 p.m. ET on each day. The postseason kicks off Saturday on the heels of the highest-scoring regular season in NFL history, packed with more points (12,692) and touchdowns (1,473) than any of the league’s previous 100 years. All told, 179 of 256 games – 70 percent – were within one score (eight points) in the fourth quarter, more games than all but one season in league annals (184 in 2016). And no lead was safe, as winning teams combined to erase deficits of 10-or-more points in 43 games, tying a single-season league record. Steady, dangerous teams led by consistent veterans, young and on-the-rise clubs guided by sensational newcomers, they all have seats at the table. • Kiszla: There's Only One Way Beautiful Bro-Mance Between Broncos Chris
Kiszla: There’s only one way beautiful bro-mance between Broncos Chris Harris Jr. and Von Miller can continue beyond 2019 By Mark Kiszla Denver Post July 18, 2019 The two most essential pieces for Denver this season? Shaq and Kobe … or Chris and Von, if your heart bleeds orange. Before the Broncos even don the pads, there’s already a controversy at training camp. Von Miller and Chris Harris Jr., the two best players on the team, are bickering like brothers. “We are like Shaq and Kobe,” Harris said Wednesday, comparing the Broncos’ stellar defensive tandem to the legendary Los Angeles Lakers of yore. So being the intrepid reporter, I asked: Which one is Shaquille O’Neal? And who is Kobe Bryant? Harris immediately piped up: “He’s Shaq.” And Miller retorted: “I’m definitely Kobe.” Children, please. Try to behave. We all know the Broncos haven’t been on the same page – or in the NFL playoffs — since Super Bowl 50. So it appears Harris and Miller are already in mid-season form, even before new coach Vic Fangio is forced to toss aside his beloved gray sweats in the sweltering July heat. Yes, Miller and Harris are just messing with each other about the Shaq and Kobe stuff. So let’s get down to serious business: How good should Broncos Country expect their favorite team to be in 2019? “I’ll let you guys set that. We know what our goals are,” said GM John Elway, his trademark swagger stuck in a revolving door of failed quarterbacks during the past three seasons.

  • Noted Surgeon Dr. James Andrews Wants Your Young Athlete to Stay Healthy by Playing Less
Page 1 of 8 Noted surgeon Dr. James Andrews wants your young athlete to stay healthy by playing less By Dennis Manoloff, The Plain Dealer on February 27, 2013 at 5:00 AM, updated February 27, 2013 at 9:39 AM CLEVELAND, Ohio -- James Andrews has seen enough. Enough of coaches who mean well and try hard, but who really don't know what they need to know. Enough of parents who think their son or daughter is the next superstar athlete and must be pushed and pushed and pushed. Enough of youngsters who are forced to visit him and his colleagues around the nation. Andrews has become so alarmed that he is issuing written and verbal warnings to anyone willing to read or listen. Why should the public care what Andrews thinks? Because when the "Dr." is placed in front of his name, he becomes a world-renowned orthopedic surgeon. Andrews, who has practiced medicine for nearly 40 years, is most famous for his ability to put professional athletes back together. These athletes -- notably, a who's who of quarterbacks -- have signed contracts for a combined total well north of $1 billion after his surgeries. In 2010, Andrews was the only doctor to be named among the top 40 most powerful people in the NFL by Sports Illustrated. Andrews' specialties are knees, elbows and shoulders. One of his recent patients was Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III, who needed the anterior cruciate ligament and lateral collateral ligament repaired in his right knee. http://blog.cleveland.com/dman/print.html?entry=/2013/02/noted_surgeon_dr_james_andrews.html 2/27/2013 Page 2 of 8 The work on athletes, while important, isn't the reason Andrews collaborated with Don Yaeger, a former associate editor at Sports Illustrated, to write, "Any Given Monday: Sports Injuries and How to Prevent Them, for Athletes, Parents and Coaches -- Based on My Life in Sports Medicine." He felt compelled to write the book, then talk about it, out of fear for the younger generation.

  • Rote & Blanda: Tale of 2
THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 16, No. 3 (1994) ROTE & BLANDA: TALE OF 2 QBS Birth of the AFL in 1960 changed the course of two careers By Bob Gill Any reasonably attentive sports fan is aware that chance can play a significant role in a player's career. An injury can give a backup his big break, while bringing a veteran's career to a premature end. A star's ill-timed holdout can be another player's ticket to fame and fortune. And so on - it happens every season. Usually, breaks like these benefit rookies or younger players who haven't had a chance at a regular job. But one of the most interesting "right-place-at-the-right-time" stories involves a pair of ten-year veterans whose places in football history were determined after their NFL careers ended. It happened in the 1960s, and the players involved were a couple of pretty fair quarterbacks: George Blanda and Tobin Rote. But let's start at the beginning ... Blanda broke in with the Bears in 1949, but the 12th-round draft choice saw little action behind Johnny Lujack and aging Sid Luckman. He played even less at QB for the next two years, throwing only one pass and spending most of his time as a linebacker and kicker. Meanwhile, Rote had been taken by the Packers in the second round of the 1950 draft and suffered through a tough rookie season, throwing a league-high 24 interceptions. Facing a challenge from a talented passer named Bobby Thomason in 1951, he improved his passing stats and really shone as a runner, leading the team with 523 yards and leading the league with an average of 6.9 yards per carry.
