Human Resources Central Washington University Ellensburg, Washington

Dear Sir/Madam:

With this letter I am applying for the General Manager, KCWU Radio position at Central Washington University in Ellensburg, Washington.

I begin with a brief history of my management and administrative experiences in public radio management. Prior to receiving my doctorate in Heritage Studies from Arkansas State University, I managed and supervised professional personnel and student staff at university radio stations in Mississippi, , Maryland and Nebraska.

As Associate Professor at Jackson State University, I taught broadcasting courses in the Department of Mass Communications. I advised broadcast students; collaborated with faculty on departmental projects; and, developed a recruiting plan to increase student diversity in the Mass Communications Department at Jackson State University.

During my tenure as Assistant Professor/Director of Media Operations- KVNO/UNO-Television at the University of Nebraska-Omaha, I managed, directed budget and supervised professional staff and taught in the School of Communication. Additionally, I collaborated with faculty and community organizations to develop design and implement a public outreach media campaign to support homeless youths. In 2008, I collaborated with colleagues and community leaders to spearhead a clothing drive in Omaha, Nebraska designed to collect and transport clothes to homeless Ethiopian youths living in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The clothing drive involved participation of high school, college students, local businesses, state and elected officials in Omaha, Nebraska and Houston, Texas.

I planned and initiated a highly visible community service initiative titled, “Children of Omaha Public Service Media Initiative,” winner of the Nebraska Broadcaster Award of Excellence in 2009. This initiative brought together media operations and community organizations to develop media and community strategies focusing attention on health issues impacting youths, such as obesity, poverty, and childhood diabetes. I served as a board member of Source Net Inc., an Omaha, Nebraska organization serving at-risk poverty stricken urban children and family through evaluation to enhance high school success in high school.

As Assistant Professor and KASU-FM Station Manager at Arkansas State University, I taught broadcasting courses in the Department of Radio/Television and worked with colleagues on strategic planning and departmental committees. In addition to academic responsibilities, I supervised professional staff, budget and directed station programming, grant and fundraising initiatives. I also coordinated and managed a monthly community blues concert series for the Department of Radio-Television. The Blue Monday concert series received the 2006 Media Support Award for Tourism Achievement for the positive impact it had on tourism in our community. Additionally, I collaborated with colleagues in the Department of Social Work at Arkansas State University on successful international research projects in Durbin, South Africa and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

During my tenure as General Manager of WESM-FM at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore in Princess Anne, Maryland, I worked with university administrators, local residents, and members of Maryland Governors’ Office of Handicapped Individuals to establish the first Eastern Shore Radio Reading Service for Blind and Print Handicapped Individuals on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Working with a community-based coalition comprised of elected officials, academicians, and public radio supporters, we successfully launched the radio reading service now serving a previously underserved constituency on Maryland Eastern Shore.

I have worked collaboratively with leaders in local and state government on media and community-based projects designed to inform, inspire, educate and build positive sustaining relationships among diverse community stakeholders.

Personally, I am honest, hard-working, a team player and a self-starter. I bring extensive years of administrative, management, and university-related outreach experience to this position.

Please give my application your most serious consideration. If you require additional information, please contact me at .

Professionally,

Robert A. Franklin, PhD.
