1. Inleiding Waller, who grew up in Kenya and Hong Kong and attended boarding school in the U.K., has brought that perspective since he joined the NFL in 2006. In one early meeting, he played the intro to NFL Films’ ‘’America’s Game’’ series and asked the owners in the room, ‘’Is that it? Are we going to just be America’s Game?’’ ‘’Because the world we live in at the moment, that’s probably not enough,’’ Waller said last week. ‘’The world’s changing, and it’s global, so if we want to continue to be the No.1 sport in American, we are probably going the have to be more relevant globally. The U.S. is not going te be the center of the world in het next 50 years. It is going to be China or India or Russia or Brazil. If you don’t change the nature of what you do, you are going to go through some very tough times.’’ Barlow (2007) geeft aan dat basketbal en voetbal populair werden, omdat er weinig uitrusting voor nodig is: “Basketball thrives internationally, because it does not require much equipment and does not directly compete with already entrenched, similar sports. … Football, on the other hand, requires a tremendous amount of equipment, special facilities, and isn't much fun for the schmucks (I speak from experience) who block and tackle.

DEVELOPMENT, EVOLUTION, AND BARGAINING IN THE NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE Thomas Sisco The National Football League [hereinafter: NFL] is the most popular professional sports organization in the United States, but even with the current popularity and status of the NFL, ratings and the public perception of the on-field product have been on steady decline.1 Many believe this is a byproduct of the NFL being the only one of the 4 major professional sports leagues in the country without a self-controlled system for player development. Major League Baseball [hereinafter: MLB] has a prominent and successful minor league baseball system, the National Hockey League has the American Hockey League and East Coast Hockey League, the National Basketball Association [hereinafter: NBA] has the 22 team development league widely known as “The D- League”, but the NFL relies on the National Collegiate Athletic Association [hereinafter: NCAA] to develop young players for a career in their league. The Canadian Football League and the Arena Football League are generally inadequate in developing players for the NFL as the rules of gameplay and the field dimensions differ from those of NFL football.2 NFL Europe, a developmental league founded by Paul Tagliabue, former NFL Commissioner, has seen minor success.3 NFL Europe, existing by various names during its lifespan, operated from 1991 until it was disbanded in 2007.4 During its existence, the NFL Europe served as a suitable incubator for a 1 Darren Rovell, NFL most popular for 30th year in row, ESPN (January 26, 2014), http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/10354114/harris-poll-nfl-most-popular-mlb-2nd, .

Well, here you go. The national crisis is over. The annual post-Super Bowl football withdrawal, a seemingly incurable malady that impacts millions every year the second weekend in February and lasts weeks and months, is now in the past thanks to The Alliance of American Football, the creation of Charlie Ebersol, a television and film producer, and Bill Polian, a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. They have the football game plan, the business model with multiple big-money investors and a national television contract with CBS to succeed where other spring leagues have failed. The idea is not to compete with the National Football League. That’s a failed concept. The Alliance will complement the NFL and satisfy the insatiable appetite of football fans who otherwise would be suffering from a long period of depression.

NFL EUROPE: NEXT NFL STARS COMING UP! The NFL EUROPE LEAGUE completed an outstanding 13th season this spring and now a talented group of players return to the United States eager to make their mark in the NFL. The new NFL Europe veterans, who played before record crowds across the pond, as attendance averaged 18,965 – the most since the league began play as an all-European competition in 1995 – can find inspiration all over the field, as NFL players at every position have used their time abroad as a springboard to success. Perhaps that’s most evident at quarterback, where 27 NFL Europe veterans have gone on to start in the NFL, including JAKE DELHOMME of the Carolina Panthers, who sharpened his skills with the 1998 Amsterdam Admirals and 1999 Frankfurt Galaxy. “I will always be grateful to NFL Europe,” says Delhomme. “I was able to play in games and win a championship with the Galaxy, and that’s something I am extremely proud of.” In 2004, 262 players with NFL Europe experience appeared on NFL rosters, including All-Stars DAVID AKERS, LA’ROI GLOVER, MARCO RIVERA, ADAM VINATIERI and BRIAN WATERS. Countless other NFLEL players made a positive impact, such as return specialist DANTE HALL, quarterbacks Delhomme and KURT WARNER, and guard JOE ANDRUZZI. “If not for NFL Europe, I would not be where I am today,” says Hall, a standout with the 2001 Scottish Claymores. A sampling of NFL success stories who first tasted success in NFL Europe: Pos. Players Pos. Players QB J. Delhomme, J. Fiedler, B.
