CITY OF YORK NO PETS PERMITTED #YorkfestPA Mayor C. Kim Bracey On the Cover The City of York is proud to partner with Polly Stetler as the 2017 Yorkfest Featured Artist. Polly Stetler grew up making things, but came to the art world relatively late. Born in Connecticut, raised in New Jersey, and relocated to York, PA, in 1977, Polly came from a family of pragmatic New Englanders who, if not particularly interested in the arts per se, raised her with the sense that making things and making things work are worthwhile endeavors. Polly graduated from Drew University in Madison, NJ, with a BA in Art History, and she moved to York in late 1977. In March 1978, she began her career with the late Louis J. Appell, Jr. at Susquehanna Pfaltzgraff, with whom she worked closely for the next 38 years. In 2005, after several years of making traditional quilts, Polly and a friend, almost by chance, enrolled in a week-long workshop with Nancy Crow, an internationally known and admired quilt artist. She has not made a traditional quilt since. Today, Polly hand dyes most of her fabrics and is exploring surface-design techniques such as shibori and other resist processes, and discharge. In her work, she free-hand cuts her fabrics and joins them by machine. She prefers to hand quilt her work but machine quilts when the harder lines of machine quilting seem to enhance the piece. Polly has participated in the Art of the State, PA Craft, PA Arts Experience, the Governor’s Arts Awards, the Inaugural Exhibit of the Pennsylvania Arts, “The Art of Giving: Honoring the Legacy of Louis J. Appell, Jr.,” and, in 2014, had a solo exhibit at YorkArts (now Creative York).

The rest stop seating areas throughout the festival grounds are made possible by a grant from the Hahn Home Fund of the York County Community Foundation.

The mission… The Yorkfest Fine Arts Festival celebrates the arts with an annual presentation of diverse, high-quality visual, performing, and literary arts for the enrichment, education and enjoyment of Central Pennsylvania and beyond. Silken Literary Tent This year, the poetry tent has been renamed the Silken Literary Tent, which gets its name from Robert Frost’s The Silken Tent, a poem about our interconnectedness to everything in the world, and especially our relationship to one other, the way that we are “loosely bound by countless silken ties of love and thought to everything on earth...” and it is the perfect name for a venue that features all expressions of the literary arts. Come sit beneath the sounds of dynamic writers, poets, storytellers, and playwrights who will be giving performances and readings in an open-air tent at the corner of Pershing Avenue and Market Street. From page poetry to dramatic monologues, spoken word to storytelling, local and regional artists will fill the streets of York with their extraordinary voices in this two-day celebration of the literary arts. Their newest CD “Peace and Love” (Dot Time Records) includes such songs as “Get Together” and “America”. Their other CD “Can’t Find My Way Home” (Dot Time Records) is played regularly on the on Sirius XM radio and has audiences raving about their unexpected interpretations of this music. They are reaching into the “baby boomer” and subsequent generations who came of age with rock and roll, the Beatles, hard rock, and other genres which are rarely played by jazz groups. In Jazz in Europe, Johan van Deeg wrote, “The Jost Project is without a doubt one of the most creative bands I have ever heard,” and Grace Blake, Artist Relations Manager of Iridium in New York, said “They totally blew me away!” Extremity (7:30 p.m.) Extremity is a band from York. They play an eclectic style of music from soulful ballads to hard-driving funk. Extremity is the brainchild of Don Carn and Larry Lentz and has been together for more than a quarter century. They have been featured in many major jazz festivals and are still going strong to this day. Don Carn (violin and electric bass) of York has been playing the violin since third grade. A former symphonic musican, Don has performed at jazz festivals from Montreal to Cape May. He continues to teach music to students throughout the York area. Larry Lentz (keyboards) is originally from York and now lives in Carlisle. Larry has performed throughout the United States and Europe. Along with performances with various groups throughout the country, Larry is a world-class solo Jazz pianist. Mack White (percussion) is an Extremity mainstay. He is one of the most sought- after Percussionists in the area playing anything from African Rhythms, Latin Rhythms and Funk. Mack also works with at-risk youth in York. John Harris Jr. (saxophones and flute) has been playing Sax since fourth grade and has played throughout the United States and Canada with many bands during his career. His soulful and personalized sound on Tenor Sax gives Extremity its own unique sound. John is still playing with other bands and is a resident of York. Jeff Stabley (drums) teaches Jazz Studies at York College of Pennsylvania where he directs the Jazz Ensemble and Groove Ensemble. He is also a music teacher at Lincoln Intermediate Unit #12. For more than 17 years, Jeff has been the music director of First Presbyterian Church of York’s popular Jazz Vespers Concert that honors Dr. Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Jeff has been the artistic director for “Jazz In The City” for six years; this First Friday event is hosted by The Studio at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts. Jeff can be heard locally drumming with Tim Warfield and playing keyboard in the hip- hop improvisation project - Compound.
