San Antonio Aerospace Capabilities Directory Sponsored by: San Antonio Aerospace Capabilities Directory Summary We are pleased to present the San Antonio Aerospace Capabilities Directory, a joint effort of the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce and Port San Antonio. The purpose of this directory is to effectively quantify and qualify the broad scope of aerospace and aviation capabilities that exists throughout the metropolitan San Antonio region. It includes company names and points of contact, brief descriptions and business core competencies of local operations, industry and quality certifications, and examples of key customers. This directory is intended for public use, and will exist as an organic document that will be updated periodically by the Port San Antonio and San Antonio Chamber of Commerce staff. The San Antonio aerospace and aviation industry includes a range of businesses that manufacture aircraft equipment and parts, service and repair aircraft, produce and distribute transportation equipment and supplies, provide both scheduled and unscheduled air transportation, and operate schools of flight. These activities can be classified in two major sectors: Services/Manufacturing and Transportation, with an almost equal number of employees in both areas. Approximately 13,000 people work in the combined aerospace‐related maintenance, repair, and operations (MRO), manufacturing, military, and air transportation services industry. Measured by the dollar volume of final sales of its products and services, the aerospace industry’s estimated economic impact is $5 billion annually. However, this amount significantly underestimates the true impact of all business activities in this community related to aerospace, as it does not take into account the payroll and production data from three local military units whose personnel account for about one‐fourth of the 13,000 workers in this area. San Antonio’s aerospace industry has earned global recognition for its skills maintaining aging airframes and power‐plants. Yet, it also has operators performing work on some of the world's most advanced technology in space exploration, airplane design and engineering, avionics and electronics systems development, as well as aircraft sustainment. Many of those companies, such as Boeing, VT Systems – San Antonio Aerospace, Southwest Research Institute and Elbit Systems, are highlighted in this directory. Also, San Antonio has a host of number of exceptional aerospace and aviation academic institutions. An example is the Alamo Area Aerospace Academy program, which works in close partnership with local industry, and serves as a national model for developing a pipeline between local high school students and aerospace employers. The Aerospace Academy offers both classroom instruction and real‐world experience through full‐time paid internships provided by industry partners. Upon finishing high school, graduates of the academy are ready to launch their careers with area aerospace firms, and are well on their way toward qualifying for their Federal Aviation Administration Airframe & Powerplant Mechanics’ certificates. Another example is Hallmark University’s College of Aeronautics, which has provided aeronautics training and degree programs for more than 45 years. This includes Bachelor of Science degrees in Aviation Management, as well as Associate of Applied Science degrees in Airframe and Powerplant. Unlike typical maintenance schools, students at Hallmark get to work on operational jet and turbine engines, previously‐airborne airframes, and a multitude of aeronautical equipment currently used in the aviation industry. San Antonio has a robust aerospace and aviation industry. Through the use of this directory, it is our hope that you will recognize and perhaps utilize some of products, skills and services of our local partners in your search for qualified vendors, suppliers or manufacturers for your particular business needs.
