LINES Vol. 41.5 • May 2021 President’s Message Wow! What a CDS-GKC kick off for National and Driving Month with our Michael Scott Clinic and Fun Day rolled into one. The weather was perfect and people travelled from miles around to attend.

Edna Oakley drove in from Ashland, MO for fun with good friends and a chance to have a clinic lesson with Michael.

Michael tested drivers who have taken lessons in previous clinics to demonstrate to them how much they have grown in driving knowledge and to give them more confidence. Some of our new life size metal cut-outs for MRCC and HDT cross country courses made their debut in the popular desensitizing area of the Fun Day. I want to thank Rebecca Schwartz, a neighbor of former member Janis Rowell for thinking of us as she retired and downsized. Her generosity will help us have more good times like this one. She has generously donated two western (including a show ) two hunt saddles, , a set of Amish -size harness, halters and a myriad of equipment. See more in the newsletter. The weather is getting nice. The country is opening. Kansas City and surrounding counties are opening. Let us hope nothing gets in the way of a summer full of driving fun. Until we meet again, drive safely and stay safe. Linda Page 1 CDSGKC 2021 Events of Interest May 21, 22 Pioneer Carriage Show Garnett Blanchford & 23 & Training Combined Test. CDSGKC 1-314-795-5336 members invited, CDS friends are many As Linda mentioned in her column, our club recently received a wonderful gift of saddles, bridles, harness and other tack from a friend we don’t even know. But Becky Schwartz knows some of us, including Dave &Janice Rowell and Dave & Kathleen Gustafson. They are longtime former members who have kept in touch through the years because of their friendships with current members, our website, and this newsletter. Because of these friendships Becky decided to re-home many of her horsey assets to CDSGKC. We’ll be able to sell these items to help finance many of the upcoming activities we’re planning for our members — judge and clinician fees, facility rental, fun days and more. And because we are a 501(c)3 organization, she may even be able to take the donation off her taxes. Advice from Michael Scott One of Michael’s consistent messages to all is BE PATIENT! When working with your horse or pony, the first thing you have to do is relax yourself so your horse can relax too and learn what you’re trying to teach. Page 3 Meet Kelsey O’Donnell Kelsey O’Donnell is a new friend of CDSGKC. She’s been interested in since riding a pony at a birthday party when she was a little girl. As she got older, she took riding lessons, and realized that being around horses relaxed and calmed her and that she had a calming affect on them too!.

Kelsey introduces a young pony to one of the "scary" objects in the Clinics desensitizing course.

Her relationship with our club began when her Grandmother took her to meet a good friend — Judi Adams and her mare "Tillie". That began Kelsey’s education in carriage driving. Judi is always ready to encourage young people’s interest in horses. So last fall, when Michael Scott came to town she invited Kelsey to come and watch the clinic. She ended up helping lots of drivers and making lots of friends who all want to encourage her interest in horses and driving.

Shiela Goodman and "Wills" give Kelsey a turn as Navigator.
