Immediate Source of Acquisition The collection was donated to California State Polytechnic University, Pomona by Gail G. Unzelman between 2000 and 2017. Biographical / Historical Gail G. Unzelman is an author, publisher, and collector of wine books and other wine materials. In 1990, she founded "Wayward Tendrils - A Wine Book Collector's Society." Until 2015, the Society published a journal called Wayward Tendrils Quarterly. Unzelman is also the founder of Nomis Press, which has published wine-related books including Unzelman's own book Wine & Gastronomy: A New Short-Title Bibliography Guide Based on the André L. Simon Bibliothecas, Vinaria, Gastronomica, & Bacchica . Unzelman has written and co-authored several other books, including Sonoma County Wineries, which is part of Arcadia Publishing's "Postcard History Series." Scope and Contents The collection contains postcards, photographs, correspondence, wine labels, clippings, brochures, booklets, ephemera, and realia relating to wineries, figures in the wine industry, wine regions, and wine sellers in California. The photographs and postcards contain images of historic wineries in Southern California, including the Virginia Dare Winery (Garrett & Company) in Rancho Cucamonga and the Italian Vineyard Company in Guasti. The correspondence is from Secondo Guasti, the founder of the Italian Vineyard Company, and between vintner Jean Louis Sainsevain and the United States Treasury Department relating to a tax matter concerning Sainsevain. Jean Louis Sainsevain was the nephew of early Los Angeles winemaker Jean-Louis Vignes and the co-owner of the 19th century Los Angeles winery El Aliso vineyard, which Sainsevain and his cousin bought from Vignes. The collection also contains envelopes imprinted with the names of E.C. Bichowsky, Viticultural Commissioner for the Los Angeles District in the late 19th century and J. DeBarth Shorb, Viticultural Commissioner for California in the late 19th century. Arrangement The collection is arranged alphabetically by folder title but does not reflect physical arrangement.
