Kappa®: the Champions' Jersey GALLERY Kappa®: the champions’ jersey Recounting the history of soccer and of the shirts worn by its players, helps us understand if not all, a good part of our country’s pop culture. The anticipation, pipe dreams, passion and faith experienced in the beautiful game, wrapped in special, colorful fabrics, are the same animating all our lives. Soccer is a metaphor of life, of the victories and defeats, marking our existence. Our team’s shirt is a flag, a symbol to live by and respect, and the uniforms worn by athletes are legends woven with deeds and memories, vision and determination, endeavour and team spirit. In this exhibition Kappa®, with its timeless shirts, tell a story starting at the end of the 70s, still enchanting generations of enthusiasts today. During the Seventies Kappa, thanks to the intuition of managing director Maurizio Vitale, inspired by sales and marketing director Marco Boglione, launched the sports sponsorship market. In 1978 Vitale met with Juventus president Giampiero Boniperti and told him: “I want to sponsor you”. Legend has it Boniperti was confused by this unusual proposition and asked: “But do you want to give us money or do you want money from us?”. “Give” replied Vitale. Shortly after that Maglificio Calzificio Torinese provided the team’s kit, working with it to improve its performance, in exchange for printing the Omini logo on the jerseys. The Robe di Kappa® brand – later simplified into Kappa® – ended up on the shirts worn by legends such as Zoff, Bettega and Scirea, at the same time entering the homes of millions of Italians, and not only… History repeated itself in 1999. Kappa® had recently made a comeback thanks to Marco Boglione, who saved the brand from bankruptcy with BasicNet. To announce Kappa®’s return to the entire world Boglione made a life-long dream come true by sponsoring the Italian national soccer team. And here is where the Kombat™ 2000 comes in: a surf shirt made with fitness fabric, featuring the right characteristics to revolutionize the idea of a soccer jersey as well as the game itself. Thanks to its high level of elasticity and its stop stopping system, the Kombat™ has two undeniable advantages: if the player is held back it emphasizes the foul for the referee and allows the athlete to finish the action and score. The first 40 centimeters are completely inert, and if the player gets grabbed by the shirt he will not be slowed down or stopped by the opponent. Today Kappa®’s style department continues to December 1978, Kappa®’s first sponsorship deal, Juventus research new technologies to pursue innovation in jersey president Giampiero Boniperti and entrepreneur Maurizio Vitale design and guarantee top performance standards for the present the team’s new jersey branded “Robe di Kappa®” players wearing them. 1999 ITALIAN NATIONAL FOOTBALL TEAM BAGGIO No. 10 BasicNet Collection 1989-1990 AC MILAN VAN BASTEN No. 9 BasicNet Collection 1996-1997 In 1994 Marco Boglione struck a FC BARCELONA sponsorship deal with Futbol Club RONALDO No. 9 Barcelona president Josep Lluís Núñez Clemente stating: “in our relationship with Barça there’s a BasicNet Collection business element but above all a strong element of feeling”. 1997-1998 JUVENTUS F.C. Rather, that seems to be the point of the book, until you reach the postscript, and a resolution.

  • Il Talento Di Francesco. Totti E Borromini: Due Fuoriclasse a Confronto
“Hai capito male.

The Thierry Henry statue: a hollow icon “The statues are another development in our ongoing programme to commemorate significant Arsenal moments, matches and individuals and make Emirates Stadium an inspiring place for us all.” In December 2011 Arsenal FC unveiled statues of Thierry Henry, Tony Adams and Herbert Chapman. With over 50 statues of association footballers and managers erected in the UK in the past 20 years, the Arsenal triumverate are on first sight just another manifestation of this fashion. Our paper draws upon a detailed examination of the Arsenal statues and a complete record of the preceding UK football statuary to show that the conventional figurative statue of Henry actually represents a stark divergence in subject selection and design; one that points towards a new and nuanced use of this art form to inspire ‘us all’. Football statues, particularly those erected by clubs themselves, have typically celebrated loyal players and successful managers who performed 35-45 years prior to their commemoration1. By harking back to a mythical golden age, evoking childhood memories of middle-aged supporters, creating a desire to pilgrimage2, and proclaiming a depth of history, they market the club to a specific demographic group through nostalgia and authenticity. However Henry is the first contemporary icon depicted, a choice that brands through projecting style and glamour rather than nostalgia, and speaks directly to younger supporters without requiring translation by an older generation. The unusually low plinth and crouched pose invite interactivity. The design supports the theory of statues as hollow icons that can be filled with multiple meanings3.

  • Street Soccer
STREET SOCCER Street soccer, pick-up game, sandlot soccer or a kick-about whatever title you give to the format the idea is to give the game of soccer back to the players. Past generations learned to play the game on their own with other kids in the neighborhood or at school in these kid organized games. Today youth sports are overly adult controlled and influenced. It’s difficult today for youngsters to have a pick-up game since the streets have too many cars, the sandlot now has a mini- mall on it and parents are reluctant, with good cause, to let their child go blocks away from home on Saturday to play in a game on his or her own. Street soccer is a way for soccer clubs to give the game back to the players in the community. Once a week, or whatever frequency fits the circumstances the best, a club can have organized spontaneity. The club will provide the fields and supervision. Adults will be on site for safety and general supervision, but otherwise it is all up to the players to organize the games. The adults should NOT coach, cheer, criticize, referee or in any other way involve themselves in the game. The best bet for parents is to drop off their child, go run some errands, and then come back to pick up your child an hour or two latter. The coaches are on site NOT to coach, but to supervise, be on hand for any serious injuries and any severe discipline problems. Additionally the coaches are there to provide the game equipment and to let the players know when each game segment starts and stops.
