Investment in and maintenance of a robust data base has made this possible. BC mainland wineries are required by regulation to report and pay levies on tonnage purchased to the BCWGC, creating a comprehensive set of information to draw from. Wineries have voluntarily submitted the pricing data which has been added to this report. The BCWGC Crop Report Sub-Committee meets annually to review the report and make recommendations for the following year. Revisions to the format this year include: • standardized naming protocol of varieties • pricing table to include both metric tonne and short ton pricing • review of draft report by the sub-committee to ensure accurate representation of information. The data collected for this report is held in strict confidence and individual grower/winery information is not divulged to anyone. While this specific report is not audited, the BCWGC is required to have an annual audit and this is carried out by the Grant Thornton LLP accounting firm. The 2018 vintage was an average growing year, with an average bud-break and slightly early bloom, followed by normal summer heat tempered by smoke cover. Researchers at UBCO and at Summerland Research and Development Center have made some advances in early smoke taint detection, aiding in mitigation of this problem. Growing Degree Days (GDD) for all areas were close to 20-year averages and harvest timing was average, with yields slightly above average, and excellent quality reported for most varieties. _____________________________________ ____________________________________ Kathy Malone, Chair Kate Durisek, Executive Director BC Wine Grape Council BC Wine Grape Council Page 1 Respondent Comparisons Overview of winery respondents Total Grape Total Mainland Total Respondent Percentage of Wineries in BC Grape Wineries Wineries Total 288 249 208 83.53% Annual comparison of winery respondents Year Total Mainland Total Respondent Percentage of Grape Wineries Wineries Total 2018 249 208 83.53% 2017 232 140 60.34% 2016 - - - 2015 256 133 51.95% 2014 - - - 2013 229 140 61.14% 2012 206 110 53.40% 2011 193 116 61.66% 2010 193 126 65.28% Response rate by winery size Large >1500 S.T. These records were removed from the Average Price calculation presented in the tables below. There were 1070 entries of this type which equated to 13,869.4 tons or (32%) of the total tonnage volume. Prices were filtered to exclude values outside of the standard deviation range of $1,200 - $5,000. There were 35 entries valued at $1,200 and below of which 33 were reported as an internal price for grapes grown by the reporting winery. The 2 crops purchased from a third party in this price range equated to 15.5 tons or (0.0004%) of the total tonnage volume. There were 5 entries valued at $5000 or above of which 4 were reported as an internal price for grapes grown by the reporting winery. The single crop purchased from a third party in this price range equated to 5.3 tons or (0.0001%) of the total tonnage volume. The values in the tables below reflect the Average Price Per Ton of the remaining tonnage once these outliers were removed.
