HENDREDS TWINNING GROUP COACH TRIP TO WINCHESTER FOR CATHEDRAL, TRADITIONAL CHRISTMAS MARKET, ICE RINK and many other attractions, as well as a great range of shops for Christmas shopping! Today, Winchester combines the best of city life with the freshness of the surrounding countryside. Popular for its shopping streets and architecture, its floral summer season and quirky open air events, Winchester is most well known for its eleventh century cathedral and for the Great Hall which for over 600 years has housed the mysterious Round Table. Winchester College is the oldest continuously running school in the country, whilst the Hospital of St Cross - a medieval almshouse - still offers the Wayfarer's Dole to travellers as it has done for more than eight centuries. Home of good food, birthplace of the modern game of cricket, resting place of author Jane Austen and inspiration to the many craft- makers and artists who live here, Winchester is truly a destination for all seasons. Traditional Christmas Market: Inspired by traditional German Christmas markets, beautifully lit log chalets will be interspersed amongst the trees in the Outer Close of the Cathedral. The most discerning shoppers will enjoy the wide arrange of high quality and interesting goods on offer. Skating in Paradise! Don your hat and gloves and head to Winchester’s first Christmas ice rink. With an adjoining café bar offering stunning views of the Cathedral, there’s fun to be had on and off the ice. East Hendred Bulletin • Autumn 2006 • www.hendred.org 11 Village Heritage Reminiscences from Heritage Archives The Denniss Bakery, The Dairy, Millers, the Spar Shop and Dukes Orchard with Post Office Perambulations. The end of another era....

Planning approval for building changes on the site of what is now Dukes Orchard, coupled with the death of both Kate and John Miller in recent months highlights a further development to that area of the village bounded by the south end of White Road, Orchard Lane, and High Street and introduces perhaps some little known historic locations for the East Hendred Post Office. For some generations the Denniss family ran the village Bakery at the South end of the White Road. They had accumulated considerable property in that triangle. The last John Denniss was only 65 when Orchard Lane he died just before the Second World War leaving a wife and 3 The Post Office and Telephone Exchange for years had been run daughters. The business by Mr and Mrs Legge. After Mr Legge died the Post Office side continued for a few more years was taken on by Mrs Daisy Stibbs, wife of Frank the builder in but the death of one of those 3 Cat St., until ill health forced her to give up. daughters Annie, in childbirth accelerated the sale of the business. The other two sisters both made homes in what is now Orchard Lane (once Wyatts Lane). One sister Winnie married Mr Jim Jackson; the second, Margaret, Policeman Ron Hitchcox; the third Annie, had married Mr Ron Carver whose parents lived in what is now Peelers in Chapel Square.

The High Street with Baker’s Cart and no Telephone Box The Millers took on the shop facility from the Denniss family. It grew from the one room in the West corner, then included the installation of the Post Office in what had been a living room, and use of the old bake-house as a store. Mr Miller (Dusty), Nana Miller and Jean their daughter lived there, with John away from home. Michael (Bill) the youngest son was at school. Mr Miller introduced a milk round into the business but post war met a tragic death on the railway line at Steventon. John Miller had been based in Oxford where he was working shift. John came back into the Hendred scene. With the dairy round and his deliveries of vegetables etc, the shop business finally outgrew the space available. An attempt to increase space The Old Bakery by internal modifications was made followed by the eventual Mrs Dennis and Mrs Hitchcox (Senr.) went to live in what is demolition of the building as being unsafe. now Georgian House, where in those days one front door led to two staircases. In those days planners encouraged things new and generally building materials were in very short supply. Heritage Reminiscences continued another business enterprise called in Wantage, - books were the prime interest there but later printing etc as well. In turn the ownership of the SPAR shop, as it became known, was taken over by the Reynard's and then the Browns. With the closure of Castle's stores the Post Office returned again to the White Road store under the management of Mr Brown. Ill health forced Mr Brown to make other plans and the outcome for the site was reversion to homes again. The small terrace on the White Road and two bungalows in place of the storage barn in what is now known as Old Road.

The view north from Champs Chapel to the Spar shop including the pair of cottages to be demolished soon after John also built a large garage/ barn at the back of the shop almost where the old Plough Inn had been, and finally moved and converted the single storey building to living accommodation for Nana Miller in the garden at the rear. John was well known for the long hours he kept, he was The site of the Bakery today always on the go. Meanwhile the Post Office walk-about was not complete.
