  • Mr. Monomoy Bosses Them in the Risen Star
SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 2020 NO END IN SIGHT FOR FINITE MR. MONOMOY BOSSES by Alan Carasso THEM IN THE RISEN STAR As has been well documented, the Fair Grounds road to the GI Kentucky Oaks has been enormously productive over the last 15 years, producing no fewer than eight winners on the first Friday in May, including Monomoy Girl (Tapizar) and Serengeti Empress (Alternation) in 2018 and 2019, respectively. Finite (Munnings) is well on her way to adding to that impressive total after registering her fifth consecutive victory in Saturday=s GII Rachel Alexandra S., easily lowering the colors of the previously unbeaten Eclipse Award winner British Idiom (Flashback). Away in good order from her widest draw, Finite was a forward factor out of the stretch for the first time, but was consigned to a three-wide run around the first turn. British Idiom broke alertly and Javier Castellano looked to have an opportunity to get in and save some ground, but instead took the overland route and raced in her chief market rival=s slipstream on the backstretch run. American Pharoah: Just one of the Triple Crown winners you’ll find floating down the Mississippi Written by: Amanda Duckworth March 19, 2018 The 120-foot long American Pharoah is the largest of the Turn Services New Orleans fleet. Photos: Turn Services Anyone in New Orleans for the Louisiana Derby should keep an eye out on the riv- er for American Pharoah. Not THE American Pharoah, of course, but rather M/V American Pharoah, one of about two dozen tow boats named after famous race- horses that make up Turn Services’ fleet. While it might be unexpected to see the likes of Secretariat and Seattle Slew floating down the Mississippi River, Turn Services was founded in 1990 and is one of the largest independent fleeting and shifting compa- nies in the United States. The company’s current chairman, David Fennelly, was born in Ireland, and when he came to the United States to make his way in the world, he started as a groom at Spendthrift Farm. “He decided to try to make the American Dream happen, and he moved to Lexington to become a farm hand,” said Mario Muñoz, the president of Turn Services. “Mucking stalls and doing whatever he could do, that was his first foray into business here. He came to the U.S. with about $400 in his pocket, got a job at Spendthrift, and the rest is history. He’s always loved horses.” 1 The Native Dancer: “There are a lot of great horses from the past that have captured the hearts and minds of the world when they were racing, and we try to honor them,” says Turn Services president Mario Muñoz.

So, it was only fitting that another filly carrying the colors of Barbara Banke's operation, Clairiere (Curlin), won that Horse of the Year's namesake Grade II race at the Fair Grounds Saturday. The event, which produced GI Kentucky Oaks winners in 2018 and 2019, offered 50 points towards this year's run for the lillies. Clairiere rallied strongly from well back to capture her 1 1/16-mile debut at Churchill Downs Oct. 25. She made another late run for the lead in that venue's GII Golden Rod S.
