The celebratory notice capped off a four-year transition period across all of the school’s 21 varsity sports teams. During that time, GCU athletic teams competed against a fully-Division I schedule, however could not qualify for postseason events such as conference tournaments and/or national tournaments. With the official stamp of approval, the Lopes can now qualify for WAC Tournaments and NCAA Tournaments immediately. GCU accepted an invite to join the Western Athletic Conference on Nov. 27, 2012 and began the transition during the 2013-14 academic year. While ineligible for postseason competition during the transition, Grand Canyon found success during the four years including numerous WAC regular season titles as a department. During the transitional period, Grand Canyon claimed 14 WAC titles in sports ranging from baseball and softball to golf, tennis and track & field.
