About the Author

Steve Schwartz got an early start as a computer industry writer and author. Immediately after buying an Apple II+ in 1978, he began writing regularly for the computer magazines of the day. Since then, he has written hundreds of articles for major publications, including Macworld, PC World, InfoWorld, and Computerworld. He is also the author of more than 60 books on game and computer topics, including guides to business/productivity software (Microsoft Office, Access, and FileMaker Pro), Internet software (Internet Explorer, Outlook Express, Entourage, and Gmail), and graphics/image- editing software (, Picture It!, Digital Image Suite, and CorelDRAW). Before becoming a full-time writer in 1990, Steve served as editor-in-chief for Software Digest and technical services director for Funk Software. He also authored the first trade paperback on the then-new Nintendo phenomenon: Compute!’s Guide to Nintendo Games. Steve has a Ph.D. in psychology, consults on game and database design issues, and lives in the fictional town of Lizard Spit, Arizona. Schwartz.indb 278 10/22/12 1:54 PM In this chapter, you learn how to keep current with your favorite social networking sites and use your phone to participate in text chats. Topics include the following:

B Using Flipboard to keep up with news, entertain- ment, and social networking friends and colleagues B Using imo for text chats on a variety of major chat 10 services

Social Networking and Socializing

In addition to making phone calls, playing games, and listening to your favorite tunes, you can use your Galaxy S III for social and busi- ness networking, as well as keep up with the news of the day. For example, you can use the included Flipboard app to read articles, watch videos, and follow feeds posted by your Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn friends. If you’re looking for a more interactive experi- ence, you can install the imo app and participate in text chats with friends on any of a dozen popular chat services. Using Flipboard

If your main interest is keeping up with Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn friends, one of the simplest methods is to use the prein- stalled Flipboard app. Flipboard lets you view status updates, read posted comments, and post your own status updates and com- ments. In addition, you can use Flipboard to view news and technol- ogy articles from a variety of respected news sources.

Schwartz.indb 279 10/22/12 1:54 PM 280 Chapter 10 Social Networking and Socializing

Dedicated Apps Rather than use Flipboard for a full-blown—and potentially overwhelming— social networking experience, you may prefer to install dedicated apps for the social networking sites that you consider most important. The major sites, such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn, all have dedicated official Android apps that you can download from Google Play/Play Store.

Adding Social Networking Accounts One of the first steps in using Flipboard is to link your SNS (social networking service) accounts that you want to track. If you aren’t currently a member of a social network, visit its website and sign up first. Currently supported sites include Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, , Instagram, Flickr, Tumblr, 500px, Sina Weibo, 1 Renren, and YouTube.

1. From the Home screen, launch Flipboard by tapping Apps and then Flipboard. 2. To link an account to Flipboard, tap the red magnifying glass icon on any Flipboard main page and tap Accounts on the screen that appears.

About the Main Pages Flipboard’s main pages serve as a visual table of contents. The number of pages expands and contracts as you add or remove 2 content categories and subcat- egories. Within these pages, every content category and subcat- egory has its own thumbnail that takes you directly to its content.

Schwartz.indb 280 10/22/12 1:54 PM Using Flipboard 281

3. On the Accounts screen, scroll down to the Add an Account section and tap the name of the account that you want to track 3 with Flipboard. Only accounts that you haven’t already linked are listed. 4. On the next screen, sign into your account by entering your username (or email address) and account password. Then tap the Sign In button.

Lost Passwords If you can’t remember your account username, email address, or password, use your browser to visit the social networking site. There’s usually a conspicuous link 4 for requesting the forgotten info.

5. On the next setup screen, review the SNS’s permissions statement and tap the Allow Access but- ton. If you don’t approve of the permission requirements, tap No Thanks.

5

Back 6. The site’s current feed appears. When you’re ready to return to the main Flipboard screen, tap the back icon or press the Back key.

Removing an SNS Account Although you can’t remove an SNS account from within 6 Flipboard, there is a way to do it. From the Home screen, press the Menu key, tap Settings, tap Accounts and Sync, and select the account that you want to remove. Tap the Remove Account button and confirm the removal in the dialog box that appears.

Adding Content Feeds 1 In addition to SNS feeds, you can add content (such as news, music, and movies) from a variety of sources. 2 1. From the Home screen, launch Flipboard by tapping Apps and then Flipboard. 2. Tap the red magnifying glass icon on any Flipboard main page. 3. In the scrolling list, tap a content area that you want to configure, such as News or Tech & Science. 4. To view a sample of a content source, tap its name. To add the source to your Flipboard feed, tap the plus (+) icon to the right of its name. Repeat this step for other content sources that you want to add. When you’re done, tap the Back icon or press the Back key.

Viewing and Interacting with Content and Feeds 1 You can use Flipboard to view con- tent and status updates, as well as post your own updates.

1. Launch Flipboard or, if it’s already running, tap the back arrow in the upper-left corner of the screen or press the Back key until the main pages appear.

OTHER WAYS TO KEEP CURRENT WITH SOCIAL NETWORKING Although the Flipboard feeds are in a convenient format, you may prefer another option for checking recent Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, or other SNS activity. First, you can use the Internet app to go directly to the SNS web site, just as you would with your computer. Second, each service offers a free, dedicated app that you can download from Google Play. Tap the Play Store icon and search for Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn. >>>Go Further

Chatting with imo

Before texting (see Chapter 7, “Text and Multimedia Messaging”) became popular, people relied on dedicated chat programs to conduct online con- versations. Many of those same programs are now available as Android apps. Unlike texting, chat messages carry no per-message surcharge and there’s no limit to the number of messages that can be exchanged in a billing cycle.

Schwartz.indb 287 10/22/12 1:54 PM 288 Chapter 10 Social Networking and Socializing

Although is preinstalled on the Galaxy S III, you can use it to chat only with other Google/Gmail users. As an example of a general chat program with a wider audience, the rest of the chapter shows you how to use imo, a free download from Play Store/Google Play. (Downloading apps is explained in Chapter 11, “Installing and Using Applications.”) You can use imo to chat with friends who have an account on any of a dozen popular chat ser- vices, such as Yahoo! Messenger, AIM/ICQ, MSN, and Facebook.

Another Chat Option: ChatON ChatON, Samsung’s dedicated chat service, is preinstalled on your Galaxy S III. (Owners of other Android phones can download ChatON from Play Store/ Google Play.) Unlike imo, ChatON can only be used to chat with other ChatON users. ChatON has a clean, text message–style chat interface and includes many interesting features, such as group chats, animated emoticons, and support for file attachments. All you have to do is convince your friends that they need yet another dedicated chat service/app if they want to chat with you.

About imo Instant Messenger

The Android version of imo enables you to chat with buddies who use any of the following chat services: Microsoft Messenger, Skype, Yahoo! Messenger, Google Talk, Facebook, AIM/ICQ, Jabber, MySpace, Hyves, and VKontakte. Unlike most chat services, imo doesn’t require you to first create a separate account. While chatting, you can optionally record and send short audio clips, too.

Setting Up imo: First Launch 1 After downloading and installing imo, you need to register the existing 2 chat accounts that you want to use, determine which accounts you want to link together (for simultaneous sign-on), and review the Preferences settings.

1. On the Home screen, tap Apps and then tap imo. 2. Tap the icon of a service that you want to access using imo. You must already have an account with the selected service. 3. Enter your username and pass- word for the selected service, and tap Sign In. 3

Schwartz.indb 289 10/22/12 1:54 PM 290 Chapter 10 Social Networking and Socializing

4. If the sign-in is successful, the 4 chat account is added to the list on the Me tab and you’re logged into the account.

5. To add other chat accounts, tap the Add Account button and repeat steps 2–4. Enabled 6. Optional: To change your current Availability (preventing others from requesting chats while you’re setting up imo, for exam- ple), tap the text beside your pic- ture placeholder on the Contacts tab and select an option from the menu that appears.

5

Setting Your Availability imo remembers your most recent Availability setting the next time you launch the app. To sign in as Invisible, choose it before you log out.

7

6

Schwartz.indb 290 10/22/12 1:54 PM Chatting with imo 291

7. Optional: To add a picture that identifies you during chats, tap 7 the picture placeholder on the Contacts tab, select the stored picture that you want to use, crop the image as desired by moving and resizing the blue selection rectangle, and tap Done. 8. Optional: If you’ve registered two or more chat accounts in imo, you can link them by tapping the Link accounts button on the Me tab. When accounts are linked, signing in to one of them automatically signs you in to all of them.

8

Unlinking a Linked Account Linking initially treats all accounts as a single linked group. You can selectively unlink certain accounts by tapping the account name on the Me tab and then tapping Unlink Account in the dialog box that appears. You can still manually sign in to the unlinked accounts whenever you like by dragging its slider. (Note that you can also remove a selected account from imo by tapping Delete.)

Unlink account

Schwartz.indb 291 10/22/12 1:54 PM 292 Chapter 10 Social Networking and Socializing

9. To review Preferences for imo, tap the Preferences icon at the bot- tom of the Me tab. When you’re done making changes, press the Back key. Preferences in the Privacy section that you might want to immediately review include these: • Auto Start. When checked, imo automatically launches each time you turn on the phone. Because imo contributes to battery drain and you may not always want to be avail- able for chats, you can remove the check mark and manually launch imo when needed. 9 • Nonbuddy IMs. Clear this check mark to prevent people 10 who aren’t in your Buddies or Friends lists from messaging you. 10. When you’re done using imo, you can simultaneously sign out of all accounts and exit the program. On the Me tab, tap the Sign Out icon and then confirm by tapping Yes in the dialog box that appears. 1 Not Starting a Chat signed in Either you or a friend can initiate a chat, but you must both be logged into the same service, such as Yahoo! Messenger. It doesn’t mat- ter whether you’re both using imo, whether you’re directly connected to the chat service with its dedicated application, or whether you’re using different types of devices (computer, phone, or tablet, for example).

Signed in 1. Launch imo, tap the Me tab, and ensure that you’re signed in to the desired service(s). 2

About Signing In and Out If some or all of your chat accounts are linked, the act of signing in to any linked account automatically signs you in to all linked accounts. The Me screen always shows a green slider for each account to which you’re signed in. To manually sign in to or out of an account, drag the account’s slider to the correct position. Current setting 2. Optional: If desired, change your 3 Availability by selecting the Contacts tab, tapping the current setting, and choosing an option from the Availability menu that appears. 3. On the Contacts tab, see if the person you want to chat with is available. Tap the person’s entry to begin a chat session.

If imo is onscreen, a new message notification (1 New) appears on the Chat tab. Tap the notification, and then tap the message text to participate in a chat. Alternatively, you can tap the X to discard the message.

New Message Notifications Depending on your Notifications Preferences, the LED lights, an alert tone sounds, the phone vibrates, and/or an indicator appears in the status bar.

IMO CHAT OPTIONS AND TIPS There’s more to imo than its convenient handling of chat sessions and buddies from multiple services. You may find the following options and tips helpful. For more information about imo and its capabilities, visit https://imo.im/features. • If you don’t feel like being interrupted, you can set your Availability to Away or Busy—but the best option is to select Invisible. In that mode, you can still receive incoming messages but no one can tell you’re online. • In addition to selecting an Availability setting, you can add a Status message that displays beside your icon in Buddy lists. For instance, you can explain how

>>>Go Further you’re Busy. To add a Status message, tap the Contacts tab, tap the text box beside your availability, enter/edit the text, and tap Update. (When your Status changes, be sure to change or delete the message.)

• You can add a new buddy by tapping the Add Contact icon at the bot- tom of the Contacts tab. You’ll need to know your friend’s chat username and the chat service that he or she uses. • Those cute smiley faces (emoticons) are available for you to insert into messages. Instead of typing the characters needed to create an emoticon (such as :-) to denote a smiling face), you can just pick the one you want to insert. When typing a message, press and hold the emoticon key when you want to insert a smiley. In the pop-up palette, tap the emoticon that you want to insert. (If the desired emotion is currently displayed on the key, you can insert it by simply tapping the key.)

• Although you can’t conduct a voice chat in imo, you can transmit short audio recordings (30 seconds or less). To start a recording, tap the plus (+) icon and choose Voice IM from the pop-up menu that appears. Tap the Hold and Speak button and record your audio clip.
