Of the wildlife that goes on around you in spite of the suburban hustle and bustle? We would like to stimulate your interest by having a competition in which we would ask you for a year to keep a nature diary, or some sort of record of a project: grey squirrels, bats, foxes, etc. The eighteenth century vicar of Teddington, Stephen Hales, suggested to Gilbert White that he keep a nature diary, and in a letter to Dames Barrington, White wrote, “If I was to attempt anything it would be somewhat of a natural history of my native parish — comprising a journal for a whole year and illustrated with large notes and observations. Such a beginning might induce more able naturalists to write the history of various districts.” In this area alone we have churchyards, railways sidings, Bushey Park, and the river. Professional naturalists rely on amateurs for much of their knowledge, so if you are interested contact me, Pat Counsell on 977 3735. Richmond Upon Thames Arts Council runs a poetry competition every year - this year’s is the 16th - for young people, aged between 11 and 18. To be eligible you have to either live or study in the Borough of Richmond. Each entrant may send in as many poems as they like for 50p, and entries must be in by 27th March. If you know of anyone who would like to enter a poem, please send their entries with 50p which goes towards the cost of the hall for the prize-giving and the prizes, to me, Mrs.

Our comments are structured as: • Introduction to FORCE • Comments on specific aspects of the proposals • Considerations concerning Section 106. 1 Introduction to FORCE FORCE is an environmental and community based charity, founded in 2003 and with over 500 members, most of whom are local within the London Boroughs of Richmond upon Thames and Hounslow. Our Objects are “to promote for the benefit of the public, and to advance the education of the public, in the conservation, protection and improvement of the physical and natural environment” of the River Crane and the Duke of Northumberland’s River. More information on our organisation can be found at www.force.org.uk SEGRO Park Heathrow (‘the Site’ hereafter) is a very important location for FORCE, as it: • abuts directly onto the River Crane for some 300 metres between the A30 and the A312, via the Causeway Water Meadows • links via the River Crane upstream with the 58-hectare Cranford Park, which is in the process of major restoration funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Big Lottery • links directly via the River Crane downstream with Donkey Wood and Brazil Mill Wood, which are the focus of local initiatives to improve their environmental and community value for residents • is adjacent to Heathrow Airport, for which improvements to local air quality, connectivity and green spaces are issues of significant resident concern in both ongoing operations and potential expansion • is already designated partly Metropolitan Green Belt and partly as a Locally Significant Industrial Site.

REACH 11 SYON The Thames Landscape Strategy Review 3 3 7 Landscape Character Reach No. 11 SYON 4.11.1 Overview 1994-2012 • There has been encouraging progress in implementing Strategy aims with the two major estates that dominate this reach, Syon and Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. • Syon has re-established its visual connection with the river. • Kew’s master-planning initiatives since 2002 (when it became a World Heritage Site) have recognised the key importance of the historic landscape framework and its vistas, and the need to address the fact that Kew currently ‘turns its back on the river’. • The long stretch of towpath along the Old Deer Park is of concern as a fl ood risk for walkers, with limited access points to safe routes. • Development along the Great West Road is impacting long views from within Syon Park. • Syon House and grounds: major development plan, including re- instatement of Capability Brown landscape: re-connection of house with river (1997), opening vista to Kew Gardens (1996), re-instatement of lakehead in pleasure grounds, restoration of C18th carriage drive, landscaping of car park • Re-instatement of historic elements of Old Deer Park, including the Kew Meridian, 1997 • Kew Vision, launched, 2008 • Kew World Heritage Site Management Plan and Kew Gardens Landscape Masterplan 2012 • Willow spiling and tree management along the Kew Ha-ha • Invertebrate spiling and habitat creation works Kew Ha-ha. • Volunteer riverbank management Syon, Kew LANDSCAPE CHARACTER 4.11.2 The Syon Reach is bordered by two of the most signifi cant designed landscapes in Britain. Royal patronage at Richmond and Kew inspired some of the initial infl uential works of Bridgeman, Kent and Chambers.
