Office of the Public Relations Officer- Media Coordinator Jamia Millia Islamia December 26, 2018 Press Release Jamia Professor honored with National Bioscience Award by Department of Biotechnology, Govt of India Prof. Mohammad Zahid Ashraf has been honoured with National Bio-science Award 2018 as recognition of his research excellence. This award instituted by the Department of Biotechnology of the Government of India recognizes research and development work carried out in India during the last 5 years of the career. The award is given to Indian bio-scientists of less than 45 years of age, who has made unique contributions towards the development of state of art in basic and applied areas of biological sciences. The award carries a citation, a plaque, a cash prize of Rs 300,000 and a research support grant of Rs 15,00,000 for three years. It is considered as one of the highest Indian science awards and as equivalent to the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize given by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research of India. Dr. Ashraf is currently a Professor in the Department of Biotechnology at Faculty of Natural Sciences, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), New Delhi. Prior to this he was Head of the Genomics Division at Defence Institute of Physiology and Allied Sciences (DIPAS), Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO), Delhi. Dr. Ashraf is pioneer in the field of high altitude thrombosis and has done novel work in resolving the mystery of blood clotting on exposure to hypoxia at high altitudes in Soldiers posted at extreme altitudes including Siachen Glacier. His research has unraveled many problems associated with high altitude thrombosis and mechanisms associated with its pathology. -

But the main function of the Academy should be towards cultural improvement by contributions to human knowledge. - Prof. Meghnad Saha on the Inaugural Session of the Academy India is justified in feeling proud for its unique contributions to science in ancient days. However, successive foreign invasions and alien rule for centuries pushed science in the background and the country went through with what may be described as the dark age for science. Western science attracted Indian intelligentsia after the establishment of the western system of education and the universities; and despite many constraints, the country could produce giants like Prof. Meghnad Saha, Prof. S. N. Bose, Sir J.C. Bose and Acharya Prafulla Chandra Ray. The first World War and the world-wide economic depression caused a set back to scientific research globally - much more so in India whose scientists found it difficult even to publish their research work since they had to be almost entirely dependent on foreign journals. -

Abstract MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a new class of 18–23 nucleotide long non-coding RNAs that play critical roles in a wide spectrum of biological processes. Recent reports also throw light into the role of microRNAs as critical effectors in the intricate host-pathogen interaction networks. Evidence suggests that both virus and hosts encode microRNAs. The exclusive dependence of viruses on the host cellular machinery for their propagation and survival also make them highly susceptible to the vagaries of the cellular environment like small RNA mediated interference. -

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I am completing my sixth year at IGIB when I am writing this acknowledgement. This journey of my PhD where I have given most productive 6 years of my life has taught me a lot of things and transformed me as a person. Most important lessons I have learnt from here is, a never give up attitude, and how to rise after repeated failure thanks to crystallography. I have started my PhD in crystallography area and ending it in a genomics area. This would not have been possible in any other institute in India. So I am greatly indebted to my research institute IGIB and all the people who supported me during my journey of PhD. Although words might not be enough to express my gratitude towards all the people who helped me during this journey but I will still try. First, I would like to give my sincere regards to Dr. Rakesh Sharma, for registering me as a PhD student under his guidance and for his expert scientific advices. I would like to acknowledge most important person for my training and PhD my mentor Dr. Bhupesh Taneja, it would not have been possible for me to finish my work without his constant support, guidance and motivation. His professional skills and strong background in structural biology helped me defining and completing my PhD objectives. Most important lessons I learnt from him apart from science is how to “keep calm and carry on” in adverse situation. I really appreciate the way he gave me scientific thinking space outside his core expertise, and his eagerness and willingness to support me for learning novel techniques through collaborations. -
