This focus seeks to understand the material dimension of social life to define the particularities of objects in the viability of social and symbolic practices. The objective of one of the fronts in the research line “Quotidian and Society” is to develop historical issues related to domestic space. One of the guiding questions in the collections formation concerns the constitution of feminine identity associated with the simultaneous production in the domestic space. For the past five years, hundreds of objects have been collected in the light of these ques- tions, among them are the two items on the cover of UMAC Journal volume 7. The painted wood napkin holder used in 20th century has the shape of a woman peddler, a constant character in many Brazilian regions, but one that across time has been typified as a baiana – a feminine character from the northeastern state of Bahia, Brazil. The baiana is associated with the tra- ditional chore of selling fresh and prepared foods by Afro-descendants, both slaves and free citizens, throughout 18th and 19th centuries. In 1998, this practice became a registered profession and, in 2012, intangible heritage. The baiana’s typical dress is completed when the white paper napkins are placed in the holder. The porcelain bowl that imitates the weaving of organic fibers is a constant decoration piece in 19th century interior design until the end of the 20th century. The technique was developed to foster the nostalgia for a pre-industrial era, which the bourgeois home constantly references in trying to place itself as a refuge against the anonymous crowds, mechanical work and buzz of urban societies. Evaluating change - The University Museum Proceedings of the 13th Conference of the International Committee of ICOM for University Museums and Collections (UMAC) – Rio de Janeiro, 10–17th August 2013 9 — VOLUME 7 2014 UNIVERSITY MUSEUMS AND COLLECTIONS JOURNAL Interior objects collection in a history museum: Shifting from donations to research-based acquisitions Vânia Carneiro de Carvalho Abstract Ever since it was established in 1890, the Museu Paulista has been building up a collection of household objects through donations from affluent families whose names echo through the political and economic history of São Paulo, Brazil. The outcome of this spontaneous donation process was the formation of a collection that accurately portrays local urban elites. However, from 1989 onwards, the absorption of methodologies and themes derived from studies of material culture in order to interpret historiographic issues has allowed this Museum to reshape the social profiles of its collec- tions. This paper explains how an exhibition project grounded on these new parameters altered the profile of its interior objects collection. The purpose of this exhibition project is to revitalize one of the three permanent exhibition galleries at this Museum, which will re-open on completion of the restora- tion of its XIX century building. The changes in this collection were possible because this exhibition features historical objects that are the raw materials of the research project in question. Historical exhibitions need not be only a means of presenting research projects conducted previously, as this specific characteristic allows research activities and displays to provide mutual feed- back, thus prompting a return to other field surveys and issues addressed through research. This two-way relationship between research and display allowed the interior objects collection built up by the Museu Paulista to be extended and diversified significantly in terms of its social representativity, effectively implementing an acquisitions policy associated with research for this segment of the collections housed by this Museum. 10 — VOLUME 7 2014 UNIVERSITY MUSEUMS AND COLLECTIONS JOURNAL Back to basics The existence of an acquisitions policy associated with research in a university museum seems to be a basic pre-requisite. For the Museu Paulista – today specializing in the history of Brazilian soci- ety, and part of the University of São Paulo – the implementation of an acquisitions policy was a complex and difficult process, with many stumbling blocks. Initially, because this Museum has kept alive its role as a Memorial to Brazil’s Independence from Portuguese colonial rule. As such, part of its museographic configuration (which was originally established during the first two decades of the XX century) offers its visitors messages with powerful ideological content. Second, because three-di- mensional documentation is still today relegated to the background in Brazilian historiography. Finally, because squabbles among vested interests within the vast teaching body of the university delayed the effective transformation of this Museum into a showcase for the History of Brazil. Such broad-ranging issues will be merely outlined here, in order to ensure an adequate understanding of the changes introduced by research projects to a single segment of the Museum’s permanent collections: its interior objects collection. The transformations presented here arose from the lengthy implementation process of an acquisitions policy grounded on lines of research introduced at this Museum

For full information and resources visit www.nms.ac.uk/pacific Artefacts and Archives relating to Vanuatu in public repositories in Scotland (United Kingdom) This finding aid has been compiled as a result of a preliminary survey of Pacific Collections in Scottish Museums undertaken between April 2013 and December 2014. The review scoped the extent of Pacific collections in Scotland and identified key strengths and resources for future research. It also compiled Collections Level Descriptions for each regional island group and to highlight significance. The review was undertaken as a partnership across four museums in Scotland with significant or extensive collections from the Pacific region. These partners were National Museums Scotland (Edinburgh); Glasgow Museums; Perth Museum and Art Gallery and Aberdeen University Museums. Each of these museums hold collections from Vanuatu that have clear associations with islands or regions in Vanuatu and relate to well known Scottish missionaries. How to use this finding aid This finding aid provides an overview of Ni-Vanuatu artefact collections in Scotland and where possible related archives or photographs. The following list provides the names of key individuals through which the collections were acquired. The finding aid enables an initial overview of collections and resources and provides contact details for each of the major museums and libraries so that requests for further information can be made. The finding aid should also be used in conjunction with Excel spreadsheets and photographs of artefacts also deposited with the National Archives of Vanuatu.

    HISTOIRE DES COLLECTIONS NUMISMATIQUES ET DES INSTITUTIONS VOUÉES À LA NUMISMATIQUE Numismatic Collections in Scotland Scotland is fortunate in possessing two major cabinets of international signifi- cance. In addition over 120 other institutions, from large civic museums to smaller provincial ones, hold collections of coins and medals of varying size and impor- tance. 1 The two main collections, the Hunterian held at the University of Glasgow, and the national collection, housed at the National Museums of Scotland in Edinburgh, nicely complement each other. The former, based on the renowned late 18th centu- ry cabinet of Dr. William Hunter, contains an outstanding collection of Greek and Roman coins as well as important groups of Anglo-Saxon, medieval and later English, and Scottish issues along with a superb holding of medals. The National Museums of Scotland house the largest and most comprehensive group of Scottish coins and medals extant. Each collection now numbers approximately 70,000 speci- mens. The public numismatic collections from the rest of Scotland, though perhaps not so well known, are now recorded to some extent due to a National Audit of the coun- try’s cultural heritage held by museums and galleries carried out by the Scottish Museums Council in 2001 on behalf of the Scottish Government. 2 Coins and Medals was one of 20 collections types included in the questionnaire, asking for location, size and breakdown into badges, banknotes, coins, medals, tokens, and other. Over 12 million objects made up what was termed the Distributed National Collection, of which 3.3% consisted of approximately 68,000 coins and medals in the National Museums concentrated in Edinburgh and 345,000 in the non-nationals throughout the rest of the country.

The hard lot, natural thouoh it be to regret it, made the man what he was; a smoother path of life might have given us a conventional respectability, but it would not have given us the Peter Still of whom Buchan men and women may justly be proud. We have seen how, \vhen Peter Still, early in 1839, first enter- tained the idea of putting his poetical wares into book form, one of his most enthusiastic advisers to print was a man of kindred tastes to himself, George Murray, then schoolmaster at Downiehill. Peter, though just recovering from a spell of ill-health, set out for the dominie's with a bundle of manuscript poems for his perusal and judgment, and he records in a letter to a friend how proud he returned home with Murray's favourable opinioji of his poems and intended scheme—yea, he had actually got 13 sheets of goodly foolscap writing paper from his adviser for a copy of " The Rocky Hill "—a stroke of business which came as a god-send to Peter in those days! George Murray was the son of a small crofter at Kinnoir, Huntly, and was born in 1819.

This is particularly surprising when one considers it is perhaps the closest Scottish parallel to the Edinburgh foundation. Founded in April 1593 by George Keith, fifth Earl Marischal in the burgh of New Aberdeen ‘to do the utmost good to the Church, the Country and the Commonwealth’,1 like Edinburgh Marischal was a new type of institution that had more in common with the Protestant ‘arts colleges’ springing up across the continent than with the papally sanctioned Scottish universities of St Andrews, Glasgow and King’s College in Old Aberdeen.2 James Kirk is the most recent in a long line of historians to argue that the impetus for founding ‘ane college of theologe’ in Edinburgh in 1579 was carried forward by the radical presbyterian James Lawson, which led to the eventual opening on 14 October 1583 of a liberal arts college in the burgh, as part of an educational reform programme devised and rolled out across the Scottish universities by the divine and educational reformer, Andrew Melville.3 However, in a self-professedly revisionist article Michael Lynch has argued that the college settlement was far more protracted and contingent on burgh politics than the simple insertion of a one-size 1 Fasti Academiae Mariscallanae Aberdonensis: Selections from the Records of the Marischal College and University, MDXCIII–MDCCCLX, ed.
