A new scorpion species, Liocheles litodactylus, is described from the Thornton Uplands, a small mountainous massif of Far North Queensland, Australia. This species differs most notably from all other species of the genus by the absence of a lobe on the movable pedipalp finger and of a corresponding notch on the fixed finger in both males and females. Comments concerning the taxonomic value of this feature within Liochelidae are given. -

His research addresses the systematics, biogeography, and evolution of scorpions and lesser known arachnids, especially whip spiders (Amblypygi), camel spiders (Solifugae) and whip scorpions (Schizomida and Thelyphonida), using a combination of morphological, genomic, and distributional data, and diverse analytical tools. Current research focuses on integrating phylogenomics and comparative morphology to reconstruct the scorpion Tree of Life; integrative systematic revisions of scorpions in Africa, Asia, Australasia, and the New World; phylogeny and revisionary systematics of camel spiders, whip scorpions and whip spiders; testing adaptational and biogeographical hypotheses in Africa, Asia and the New World using scorpions as a model system; arachnid venoms and defense secretions; and the ecology, behavior and conservation of arachnids. The search for new and little-known arachnids has taken Prendini and his research group to 75 countries and territories on all continents except Antarctica. Key words: New state report, mitochondrial COI gene, north-eastern India Introduction Liocheles Sundevall (Mirza, 2017), where Liocheles in India is represented by Liocheles australasiae Scorpions are an extremely conserved group of (Fabricius), L. nigripes (Pocock) and L. schalleri organisms and are often referred to as “living fossils” Mirza (Pocock, 1900; Tikader and Bastawade, 1983; whose ancestral lineage can be traced back to the Mirza, 2017). To our knowledge, the distribution of Silurian period (Dunlop and Penney, 2012). With L. australasiae in India includes the Andaman and 2580 species described worldwide (Rein, 2021), the Nicobar Islands (Tikader and Bastawade, 1983) and order Scorpiones is one of the least diversified group Malabar, Kerala on the southwestern Malabar Coast of organisms. -

80 Jordan Journal of Natural History Invertebrate Fauna of Wadi Al-Quff Protected Area, Palestine Mazin Qumsiyeh Palestine Museum of Natural History and Palestine Institute of Biodiversity and Sustainability, Bethlehem University ABSTRACT We report results of a preliminary survey of the invertebrate fauna of Wadi Al-Quff area (occupied Palestine). We recorded 23 species of butterflies in 5 families. Moths were a difficult group to classify but we have at least 45 species. Dragon flies and damsel flies were noted in the Wadi Hasaka area. Four mantids in three families, two species of stick insects, one earwig species (Dermeptera) and at least seven species of Orthoptera were noted. There were at least 13 species of Hemiptera (true bugs) and 5 species of Neuroptera (netwing insects). We noted at least 13 species in ten families of the Order Diptera (the flies). We also collected/observed at least 17 species of Hymenoptera in eight families. In the Order Blattoidae (roaches), we noted two species only but the Order Coleoptera (Beetles) was very richly represented with at least 23 species in 10 families. Among parasitic arthropods we collected two species of fleas and three species of ticks (Ixodidae), one of the latter involved in transmittal of spotted fever. Five species of scorpions were noted, the largest being the Jericho or Mt. Nebo scorpion Nebo hierichonticus and the smallest being the brown scorpion Compsubuthus werneri. Two species of pseudoscorpions and two species of camel spiders were collected. A more difficult group was the regular spiders (Araneae) and we noted over two dozen species in at least 8 families. -

Liocheles Extensa, a Replacement Name for Liocheles Longimanus Locket, 1995 (Scorpiones: Ischnuridae)

As such, scorpions are rather underrepresented concerning behavioral studies for reasons such as low participation rates and motivational difculties. Here, we review the sensory abili- ties of scorpions related to navigation. Furthermore, we present an improved laboratory setup to shed light on navigational abilities in general and homing behavior in particular. We tracked directed movements towards home shelters of the lesser Asian scorpion Mesobuthus eupeus to give a detailed description of their departure and return movements. To do so, we analyzed the departure and return angles as well as measures of directness like directional deviation, lateral displacement, and straightness indices. We compared these parameters under diferent light conditions and with blinded scorpions. The moti- vation of scorpions to leave their shelter depends strongly upon the light condition and the starting time of the experiment; highest participation rates were achieved with infrared conditions or blinded scorpions, and close to dusk. Naïve scorpions are capable of returning to a shelter object in a manner that is directionally consistent with the home vector. The frst-occurring homing bouts are characterized by paths consisting of turns about 10 cm to either side of the straightest home path and a distance efciency of roughly three-quarters of the maximum efciency. -

A Sting in the Night: Pallid Bat Detection of Dangerous Prey Nicholas Carlson: McNair Scholar Dr. Jesse Barber: Mentor Biology Abstract It has been observed in previous studies that Hemprich long-eared bats (Otonycteris hemprichii) are frequently stung during predation attacks on scorpions. Although a highly toxic and dangerous prey, the scorpion toxicity does not kill the bat. The sting, however, does seem to inflict a great amount of pain. Here, we examine the role of bat vision in predator-prey interactions between a similar bat species, pallid bats (Antrozous pallidus) and northern scorpions (Paruroctonus boreus). We address the question: do bats use visual information provided by moonlight to plan attacks on dangerous prey? We predicted that under moonlit conditions, pallid bats would plan attacks on scorpion prey, therefore, being stung less often. Our experiments took place in a flight room in both simulated moonlight and complete darkness. The interactions were recorded live by three high-definition cameras mounted in three separate corners of the interaction arena. Tasks such as finding food, avoiding predators, attracting mates, and navigating through complex environments are all governed by sensory systems. Subsequently, animals have evolved an astounding range of sensory organs that are crucial to survival and reproduction. These sensory organs determine much of their evolution and behavior. Sensory ecologists investigate the type of sensory information that is gathered by animals, how it is used in a range of behaviors, and the evolution of these traits.
