A new scorpion species, Liocheles litodactylus, is described from the Thornton Uplands, a small mountainous massif of Far North Queensland, Australia. This species differs most notably from all other species of the genus by the absence of a lobe on the movable pedipalp finger and of a corresponding notch on the fixed finger in both males and females. Comments concerning the taxonomic value of this feature within Liochelidae are given. -

However, most of these studies have focused on species from the family Buthidae. To gain insights into the molecular diversity of the venom components of scorpions belonging to the family Superstitioniidae, one of the neglected scorpion families, we performed a transcriptomic and proteomic analyses for the species Superstitionia donensis. The total mRNA extracted from the venom glands of two specimens was subjected to massive sequencing by the Illumina protocol, and a total of 219,073 transcripts were generated. -

Liocheles Extensa, a Replacement Name for Liocheles Longimanus Locket, 1995 (Scorpiones: Ischnuridae)

Locket Department of Anatomical Sciences, University of Adelaide, South Australia 5005, Australia Since describing Liocheles Iongimanus Locket, 4.85, 5.0 for the two N.T. specimens. Though 1995, I have become aware that the name Werner's No. 111 is male, examination of the Iongimanus was given to a subspecies of L. hemispermatophore was not possible, the australasiae (Fabricius) by Werner (1939), thus specimen having been pinned dry originally. causing a nomenclatural problem. The two forms are clearly distinct and it is not Werner (1939) named his new subspecies necessary to synonymise them. Werner's L. Hormurus australasiae Iongimanus, which has not australasiae Iongimanus may be a valid subspecies of been subsequently mentioned in the taxonomic L. australasiae, but the present material is not literature, nor formally transferred to the genus sufficient to determine this for certain. Liocheles (Or V. Fet, personal communication), of which Hormurus is now accepted as a junior synonym (e.g., Koch 1977). Araneae (Spider) Photos Araneae (Spiders) About Information on: Spider Photos of Links to WWW Spiders Spiders of North America Relationships Spider Groups Spider Resources -- An Identification Manual About Spiders As in the other arachnid orders, appendage specialization is very important in the evolution of spiders. In spiders the five pairs of appendages of the prosoma (one of the two main body sections) that follow the chelicerae are the pedipalps followed by four pairs of walking legs. The pedipalps are modified to serve as mating organs by mature male spiders. These modifications are often very complicated and differences in their structure are important characteristics used by araneologists in the classification of spiders. Pedipalps in female spiders are structurally much simpler and are used for sensing, manipulating food and sometimes in locomotion. It is relatively easy to tell mature or nearly mature males from female spiders (at least in most groups) by looking at the pedipalps -- in females they look like functional but small legs while in males the ends tend to be enlarged, often greatly so. In young spiders these differences are not evident. There are also appendages on the opisthosoma (the rear body section, the one with no walking legs) the best known being the spinnerets. In the first spiders there were four pairs of spinnerets. Living spiders may have four e.g., (liphistiomorph spiders) or three pairs (e.g., mygalomorph and ecribellate araneomorphs) or three paris of spinnerets and a silk spinning plate called a cribellum (the earliest and many extant araneomorph spiders). Spinnerets' history as appendages is suggested in part by their being projections away from the opisthosoma and the fact that they may retain muscles for movement Much of the success of spiders traces directly to their extensive use of silk and poison. -

Diversidad De Escorpiones (Chelicerata) En El Departamento Del Atlántico, Colombia* Diversity of Scorpions

ISSN: 0123-3068 (Impreso) ISSN: 2462-8190 (En línea) CENTRO DE MUSEOS MUSEO DE HISTORIA NATURAL DIVERSIDAD DE ESCORPIONES (CHELICERATA) EN EL DEPARTAMENTO DEL ATLÁNTICO, COLOMBIA* Eider Sará-C.1, Eduardo Flórez-D.2, Neis Martínez-H.3 Resumen Se determinó la variación de la diversidad de escorpiones en siete fragmentos de Bosque Seco Tropical (BST) en el departamento del Atlántico. Los métodos de captura utilizados fueron cernido de hojarasca, agitación de follaje y captura manual nocturna con luz UV. En cada transecto se realizó un esfuerzo de dos noches y tres días. Se recolectaron 516 ejemplares representados en siete especies, seis géneros y tres familias (Buthidae, Chactidae y Hormuridae). Buthidae fue la más diversa y abundante con cuatro géneros, cinco especies y 486 individuos, destacándose la especie Tityus (Archaeotityus) tayrona cuya presencia fue constante en todos los fragmentos. El fragmento de bosque de la Reserva Campesina La Sierra (R.C.S) presentó la mayor diversidad con seis especies, seis géneros y tres familias, lo cual se debe posiblemente a la oferta de recursos y microhábitats. Con los resultados se logra ampliar el área de distribución de las especies T. (Atreus) aff. asthenes y Chactas brevicaudatus, además se encontró que en el departamento está representado el 60% de las familias y el 42,8% de los géneros registrados para Colombia, lo que indica que los relictos de BST en este departamento mantienen una fauna importante de los escorpiones registrados para Colombia.
