He studied the violin before turning to conducting in 1993, studying with Rodolfo Saglimbeni and José Antonio Abreu. He started his career as an assistant conductor of the Amadeus Chamber Orchestra, of which he became Music Director in 1996. In 1999 he became Music Director of the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra. He came to international attention when he won the inaugural Bamberger Symphoniker Gustav Mahler Competition in 2004. He was Music Director of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra (2007–12), of which he is currently Honorary Conductor, and became Music and Artistic Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 2009. A vocal champion of music education and inclusion, in 2007 he founded Youth Orchestra Los Angeles, which provides music education to over 1,200 children annually, and in 2012 he founded the Gustavo Dudamel Foundation to promote access to music as a catalyst for integration and social change. His numerous recordings include Brahms’s Fourth Symphony, which won a Grammy Award in 2012, and The John Adams Edition, nominated for a Grammy Award last year. The recipient of numerous international honours, he is a Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and in 2013 was named Musical America’s Musician of the Year and Gramophone Artist of the Year. YOLA National Through Gustavo Dudamel’s Youth Orchestra Flute Los Angeles (YOLA) programme – inspired Jonathan Webb by Venezuela’s revolutionary El Sistema – the Los Angeles Philharmonic and its community Oboe Madison Centeno partners provide free instruments, intensive music training, and academic support to over Bassoon 1200 students from vulnerable communities, Carlos Cano empowering them to become vital citizens, Ingrid Hernandez leaders, and agents of change. YOLA provides each student, from the ages of 6 to 18, with a French Horn strong musical and social foundation through Andy Gonzalez participation in 12-15 hours of programming each week. Programme activities include convenings throughout the 2019/20 academic Violas year, mentorship, private instruction, chamber Hannah Esquivel music coaching, travel opportunities, and Geovanny Martinez financial support for college applications.
