When a team has a tough experience, it can sometimes be difficult to stay positive. However, sportsmanship, dedication to a sport, and never giving up are three of the most important virtues in sports. Sure, it is nice for one’s team to come out on top, but having the will and perseverance to play night in and night out is essential for any athlete, including the Intramural Athlete of the Week. Michael Elmasian showed all the characteristics of a team player and a great captain throughout what was a grueling season. As a member of his basketball team, it was easy to see Michael’s hustle and dedication to his sport every game. No matter what the numbers were on the scoreboard, he tried his hardest until there was no time on the clock. In what was a rather difficult season for the team, Michael was one of the bright spots for his team. As the team’s center, he averaged around 10 points per game, and he was always dominant on the boards with nearly 7 rebounds per game. He was a force to be reckoned with on defense, stopping anyone who tried to drive down the lane and into the paint. His contributions on both sides of the ball helped open other opportunities for other players on the floor. That is what being a great teammate is all about. Although the team didn’t have much success this year, Michael did not let it hurt his competitve spirit. He always put the team first, and wanted what was best for the team. Whenever there was a fastbreak opportunity for the other team, Michael was always the first one down to try to break up the play. His hustle helped carry the team in some of the tougher times during the season. He was someone who, game after game, made sure that his team had fun while staying competitve as well. All of this makes Michael Elmasian the Intramural Athlete of the Week, and one of the most competivie captains on the court. The team might not have had a lot of victories, but someone who is as tough and dedicated as Michael, well, that’s a winner.
