Joseph A. Rosen Rhythm andBluesCruise,Rhythm October 2007. onthe Legendary Joe LouisWalker In 1985, after a decade of playing and singing nothing but gospel music with a quartet called the Spiritual Corinthians, 35-year-old Joe Louis Walker decided to get back to the blues. The San Francisco–born singer-guitarist had begun playing blues when he was 14, at first with a band of relatives and then with blues-singing pimp Fillmore Slim before becoming a fixture at the Matrix, the city’s preeminent rock club during the psychedelic Summer of Love, backing such visiting artists as Earl Hooker and Magic Sam. Michael Bloomfield became a close friend and mentor. The two musicians lived together for a period, and the famous guitarist even produced a Walker demo for Buddah Records, though nothing came of it. Then, in 1975, Walker walked away from the blues completely in order to escape the fast life and the drugs and alcohol associated with it that he saw negatively affecting Bloomfield and other musician friends. Walker knew nothing about the blues business when he started doing blues gigs again around the Bay Area with a band he’d put together, as a member of Oakland blues singer-guitarist Haskell “Cool Papa” Sadler’s band, and (for a tour of Europe) with the ad hoc Mississippi Delta Blues Band. -

Jay Richardson Brushes Away Snow That's Drifted Around
When popular Beaumont deejay J.P. Richardson died on Feb. 3, 1959, with Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens, he left behind more than ‘Chantilly Lace’ … he left a briefcase of songs never sung, a widow, a daughter and unborn son, and a vision of a brave new rock world By RON FRANSCELL Feb. 3, 2005 CLEAR LAKE, IOWA –Jay Richardson brushes away snow that’s drifted around the corpse-cold granite monument outside the Surf ballroom, the last place his dead father ever sang a song. Four words are uncovered: Their music lives on. But it’s just a headstone homily in this place where they say the music died. A sharp wind slices off the lake under a steel-gray sky. It’s the dead of winter and almost nothing looks alive here. The ballroom – a rock ‘n’ roll shrine that might not even exist today except for three tragic deaths – is locked up for the weekend. Skeletal trees reach their bony fingers toward a low and frozen quilt of clouds. A tattered flag’s halyard thunks against its cold, hollow pole like a broken church bell. And not a word is spoken. Richardson bows his head, as if to pray. This is a holy place to him. “I wish I hadn’t done that,” he says after a moment. Is he still haunted by the plane crash that killed a father he never knew? Can a memory be a memory if it’s only a dream? Why does it hurt him to touch this stone? “Cuz now my damn hand is cold,” Richardson says, smiling against the wind. -

And it turns out he had a far more interesting career than most one or two hit wonders. For one thing, he wrote several other hits. His original version of George Jones' #1 country hit White Lightning is included here (he also wrote but never recorded Johnny Preston's #1 pop hit Running Bear). Ritchie Valens (Elementary School Version)
Ritchie Valens (Elementary School Version) OVERVIEW ESSENTIAL QUESTION How did Ritchie Valens meld traditional Mexican music and Rock and Roll? OVERVIEW Ritchie Valens has become one of the most celebrated Rock and Roll musicians of the 1950s. His recording career lasted less than a year, cut short in February 1959, when he was killed in the same plane crash that took the lives of Rock and Roll star Buddy Holly and disc jockey/musician J.P. Richardson (better known as “The Big Bopper”). Valens released only two singles during his lifetime. The second, featuring the love ballad “Donna,” soared to No. 2 on the Billboard Pop singles chart and established Valens as a rising star. Newspaper accounts of his death referred to him as “a young sensation… rapidly becoming one of the hottest singing talents in the country,” and even “the next Elvis Presley.” But it was the B-side of that single, featuring the traditional Mexican wedding song “La Bamba,” that secured Valens’ legacy. The lyrics of the song were entirely in Spanish, sung over a tune that would have been immediately recognizable to most Mexican-Americans. Born Richard Valenzuela to a Mexican family in Southern California, Valens had played the song growing up and with various bands at school. His biographer reports that he may have been reluctant to record a Rock and Roll version of the song, both because he thought it might be disrespectful to the original and because he didn’t speak Spanish very well. But his recording, driven by Latin percussion, enjoyed commercial success—particularly for a single’s B-side— cracking the Top 40 and peaking at no. -

Competitiveness in the Music Industry a Study of the Swedish Music Companies
J ÖNKÖPING I NTERNATIONAL B USINESS S C H O O L JÖNKÖPING UNIVERSITY Competitiveness in the Music Industry A study of the Swedish Music Companies Paper within Business Administration Author: Anders Berg Jörgen Fransson Fredrik Sörendal Tutor: Elena Raviola & Annette Johansson Jönköping January 2007 Bachelor thesis in Business Administration Title: Competitiveness in the Music Industry: A study of the Swedish Music Companies Authors: Berg, Anders; Fransson, Jörgen; Sörendal, Fredrik Tutors: Raviola, Elena and Johansson, Anette Date: 2007-01-15 Subject terms: Technological Change, Sustainable Competitive Advantage, the Music Companies. Abstract Problem: The music industry has experienced a significant technological change, leav- ing the music companies with a new way of distributing music. The sale of physical products (i.e. the CD) has decreased, and the industry has seen a steady increase in digital music. In this period of technological change, how are the four major music companies, EMI, SonyBMG, Warner Music Group and Universal Music to create a competitive advantage? Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to study and analyze how the traditional music companies are creating a sustainable competitive advantage in a technologi- cally changing environment. Method: A qualitative approach, following the logic of a case study, has been used to answer the purpose. Interviews with new media managers at the four major music companies have been conducted. Furthermore, an interview with the mobile phone operator 3 was conducted since the company is one of the biggest customers to the music companies using the new technology. In or- der to avoid a biased study, we also interviewed Robert Picard at JIBS and Kris Serian at Warner Home Video who both have extensive experience in the media industry.
