AIR FORCE LANDS IN LAS CRUCES New Mexico State is 2-4 all-time against Air Force heading into Wednesday’s match-up. Like the Aggies, the Falcons are 5-2 overall on the year after starting the season 5-0 at home. The two losses for AFA came recently against Akron (84-75) and East Carolina (70-63) in the Savannah Invitational.

Center Frank Toohey leads the group of four Falcons that are averaging in double-figures with 12.6 points and a .529 shooting clip. Fellow junior Jacob Van is right on his tails with 12.3 points per game and a team-high 25 assists to go with his 50-percent shooting from the floor. 2 2016-17 Aggie Army Game Notes Game Notes #8 - Air Force

Hayden Graham, a senior forward, is averaging 12 points with a team-high 5.3 boards per game. Zach Kocur rounds out the group of double- digit scorers for Air Force, checking in with 10.4 points per game and a team-leading 14 shots from deep.

Coming off the bench for the Falcons is Ryan Manning, who is averaging 9.1 points with a .558 shooting percentage. The 6-6 forward is also second on the team in the 3-point field-goal category with 13 shots made from beyond the arc.

The Aggies dropped last year’s meeting 66-64 in overtime in Colorado Springs, Colo., in the final game of the Air Force Classic. Jalyn Pennie hit the second of his two free throws to tie the game up in regulation. After going up two on a pair of buckets at the line from Johnathon Wilkins, AFA tied things up with a two of their own. A jumper later from Kocur gave the Falcons a two-point lead before former Aggie Pascal 2016-17 WAC Standings (Final) Siakam completed an and-1 opportunity to go up 64-63. However, a short jumper by the Falcons and turnover by the Aggies with two (Thru games on 11/28/16) seconds remaining secured the 66-64 win for Air Force. Rk. Team WAC Overall 1. The recipient of the 2017 Lou Henson Award will be announced at the CollegeInsider.com awards banquet on April 31 in Phoenix, site of the men’s Division I basketball championship.

MOVIN’ ON UP With the start of his senior season, Ian Baker will have a chance to move himself up the all-time career-list in the 3-point shooting category at New Mexico State. The senior is currently seventh all-time in 3-pointers made 145 should go for the 3-point field-goal attempts category. Baker is also tied for seventh right now with Gordo Castillo (2007-11) in the career 3-point shooting-percentage, checking in with a .407 clip heading into the start of the season.

MAYFIELD BAND TAKES CENTER STAGE The Mayfield High School Band, under the direction of Johnnie Lee Lang, was the honorary pep band for the NM State Men’s Basketball home-opener on Friday, Nov. 11 when the Aggies took on Arizona Christian. About 30 members of the Mayfield Band filled section 117 in the Pan American Center for the first home game of 2016-17 season. Along with providing a fun game-day atmosphere, the addition of the Mayfield band serves as way to re-incorporate the community back to the NM State Basketball program — an outreach goal of new head men’s basketball coach Paul Weir.

The NMSU Marching Band cited other engagements that preclude its participation at the basketball games on Friday, Nov. 11, as well as the men’s game against Samford on Wednesday, Nov. 16.

AND SO IT BEGINS… On April 26, 2016, long-time Aggie men’s basketball assistant Paul Weir was named the 25th head coach at NM State. Weir, who has spent the last nine seasons on the NM State bench, has been the Aggies associate head coach and defensive coordinator since July 2011 for his predecessor Marvin Menzies.

Quickly after taking over the reins, Weir began assembling his coaching staff. His first hiring as head coach was securing legendary head coach Lou Henson as the team’s special advisor. Weir then added Jesse Bopp, who came from Chattanooga by way of VCU, to his staff. He then rounded out his staff with CSU Bakersfield assistant Marc Hsu. A familiar face for fans on the bench this year will be Aerick Sanders, who stayed on to work under Weir.

Guy Meyer, a Santa Fe native, also joined Weir as the director of basketball operations. Jordan Sperber filled out the support staff as the video coordinator.

PRESEASON FAVORITES NM State was picked to win the Western Athletic Conference in both the coaches’ and media poll, but by just a slim margin ahead of Grand Canyon. Senior guard Ian Baker was the lone Aggie to earn first-team preseason honors.

SUPER SIAKAM Former New Mexico State men’s basketball power forward Pascal Siakam secured his name into Aggie lore on June 23 after being selected in the first round by the Toronto Raptors as the 27th pick overall in the 2016 NBA Draft.

Siakam is just the third player in NM State history and the first in 46 years to be drafted in the first round since Sam Lacey (fifth overall) and Jimmy Collins (11th) in 1970. The Douala, Cameroon, native is also the first player drafted in the NBA since Randy Brown, who was the fourth pick in the second round of the 1991 NBA Draft.

Siakam becomes just the fourth player from Cameroon since 2000 to be drafted to the NBA, joining Ruben Boumtje-Boumtje (2001, Portland Trailblazers), Luc Mbah a Moute (2008, Milwaukee Bucks) and Joel Embiid (2014, Philadelphia 76ers).

The 6-9 forward had a breakout season in 2015-16, averaging 20.3 points and 11.6 rebounds and ended with Siakam earning AP All-America Honorable Mention. He also racked up Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year, NABC First-Team All-District VI, USBWA All-District VIII and Lou Henson All-America honors.

He led the nation with a whopping 27 double-doubles as a redshirt sophomore and was finished in the top 40 in several statistical categories, averaging 20.3 points (26th), 11.6 rebounds (eighth) and 2.4 blocks (32nd). Of the 22 players in 2015-16 that averaged a double-double, Siakam was the only player to score 20-plus points per game.

In just two seasons in Las Cruces, Siakam recorded 1,126 points – which ranks 21st in the program’s all-time scoring list. His two-year total in points is also the fourth-best in NM State history while his 658 career rebounds rank him 15th all-time.

His 690 points this season is the second-most in Aggie history for a single season while his 396 rebounds were the third-highest. The 396 boards was also the fourth-best mark in a single-season for the WAC. Siakam’s 658 career rebounds also ranks him 15th in conference history.

Paul Weir became the 25th head men’s basketball coach at New Mexico State on April 26, 2016, after spending nine seasons as an assistant coach, including five seasons as the associate head coach, for the Aggies.

He coached NM State to five WAC Tournament Championships (2010, 2012-15) and five subsequent NCAA Tournament appearances. The Aggies collected three WAC Championships during Weir’s tenure, including back-to-back WAC regular-season titles in 2015 and 2016 to go with their first WAC regular-season title in 2008. Overall, NM State has claimed seven WAC titles during his nine years with the program.

The Aggies’ defense led the Western Athletic Conference in scoring defense and field-goal percentage defense the last two seasons. The Aggies ranked 10th nationally in scoring defense in 2015-16, allowing just 63.1 points a game. NM State ranked 11th nationally in field goal percentage defense, as opponents shot just 39.2-percent from the floor – NM State’s lowest since the 1960-61 season and fourth-best in program history.

In 2014-15, the Aggies allowed the opposition only 59.8 points a game, ranking 21st nationally in scoring defense. NM State held three opponents under 40 points in the 14-15 campaign, all ranking in the top 10 of fewest points allowed by an Aggie team since 1950.

In addition to his defensive work, Weir also directed the recruiting efforts for the Aggies. He was responsible for signing Daniel Mullings, the first WAC Player of the Year in school history and first AP All-American in 11 years at NM State in 2014. Mullings is the only player in school history to start on four- straight NCAA Tournament teams. He also landed Sim Bhullar, a two-time WAC Tournament MVP and the paul weir first Aggie in 24 years to play in the NBA. Bhullar was also the first player of Indian descent in NBA history.
