Chautauqua Lecture Series & Educational Programs 2019 WELCOME TO THE 146th LAKESIDE CHAUTAUQUA SEASON! Dear Lakesiders, An exciting Chautauqua season has been planned to promote intellectual growth on a variety of subject matters! This booklet will provide you with a list of Education programs, speakers, times and locations. As Lakeside Chautauqua strives for continued program excellence, the Education Department continues to focus on assessing and implementing quality programming through a variety learning methods, as well as intentional collaboration with the additional Chautauqua pillars and Community Groups providing education programs. Results for the 2019 season include concentrating the Chautauqua Lecture Series in the mornings (Monday–Thursday from 10:30 a.m.–12 p.m.). This change gives way to a variety of afternoon programming, such as author visits, dialogues, seminars, and documentaries which focuses on different learning styles. In addition, programming by Community Groups who bring in outside speakers will be held without the conflict of another outside lecturer. In response to the numerous requests for well-known speakers, an increase in the number of evening education-related programs at Hoover Auditorium is happening in 2019. Speakers for this season include Wm. Paul Young, author of The Shack (June 25); Michael Roizen, MD, Chief Wellness Officer at the Cleveland Clinic (July 9); Suzi Rapp, Vice President of Animal Programs at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium (July 17); and Steve Hartman, CBS News Correspondent (July 25). Our hope is that the engaging speakers, multiple learning methods, intentional collaboration across all pillars, and partnership with community groups will ensure excellence across the education program. Please review the entire schedule for the season to maximize your experience with the Education pillar. As always, please contact a member of the Education Department team with any questions, concerns or suggestions about education programming at Lakeside. Wishing you an amazing Chautauqua season! EDUCATION PROGRAM ETIQUETTE Out of respect to the lecturers and courtesy to all in the room, the Education Department requests attendees follow the guidelines below when attending lectures: 1. Turn off all electronic devices before the program begins. 2. If expecting a call, place phone on vibrate prior to lecture, and step out of room before answering the phone. 3. Refrain from asking questions during the program unless specifically encouraged to do so by the speaker. 4. If asking a question, wait for a microphone to be brought to you before asking your question. 5. Keep your question on point and avoid long introductions to the question. 6. Avoid engaging in conversation with others during lectures, which is distracting to everyone around you. 7. Do not block an aisle with chairs. Every aisle needs to be wide enough to allow wheelchair access. 8. Standing in the back of the room during program is not permitted by order of the Fire Marshall. Please come early enough to secure a seat or quietly find one when you arrive. ASSISTIVE LISTENING DEVICE Chautauqua Hall and Orchestra Hall are equipped with hearing loops. These systems allow individuals to receive clear sound from the sound system directly to their hearing aid or cochlear implant. This eliminates most of the reverberation and background noise that can make it difficult to hear. To use the hearing loop system, the telecoil (also known as a t-coil) in the hearing aids will need to be turned on. Most hearing aids have t-coils. Contact your audiologist to learn how to turn on your telecoils. If your hearing aids lack a telecoil or you do not have hearing aids, but need assistance with hearing, a headset plugged into a loop receiver is available. Ask an Education Department staff member for more information about this new technology. ENDOWMENT FOR LIFE The Endowment for Life Initiative raises endowment funds through deferred giving to support Lakeside Chautauqua’s future. The initiative offers the opportunity for a person/family to fund a named education week. If interested, please contact Gretchen Colon at (419) 798-5396. YOUTH PROGRAMS In addition to the education programs listed in this booklet, numerous Youth Education programs are offered on a variety of topics including music, history, science, geography, art and religion. A brochure listing these programs can be found at www.lakesideohio.com/education/programs, the Lakeside Chautauqua Administration Office or by asking an Education Department staff member for a copy.
