Solar twins are de¯ned as stars with the same mass, age, atmospheric parameters (temperature, metalicity, surface gravity) luminosity, chemical composition, evolutionary state, chromospheric activity, Li depletion, and other characteristics as the Sun. Such objects may help answer the still lingering question of how typical the Sun is with respect to the local stellar population of middle-aged G-type stars. On the other hand, such a stars are presumably privileged candidates to possess planetary systems similar to our own, besides being natural places to look for telluric planets harboring life forms similar to those known to us, and for the SETI program researches. Upon identi¯cation of HD146233 as the best ever solar twin (Porto de Mello & da Silva (1997)), a following survey (da Silva (2000)) identi¯ed a number of further candidates to solar twin status among the G-type stars within 50 parsecs of the Sun. In this work, we investigate the best solar twin and solar analog candidates proposed by this survey.

Solar twins and analogs are fundamental in the characterization of the Sun’s place in the context of stellar measurements, as they are in understanding how typical the solar properties are in its neighborhood. They are also important for representing sunlight observable in the night sky for diverse photometric and spectroscopic tasks, besides being natural candidates for harboring planetary systems similar to ours and possibly even life-bearing environments. Aims. We report a photometric and spectroscopic survey of solar twin stars within 50 parsecs of the Sun. Hipparcos absolute mag- nitudes and (B − V)Tycho colors were used to define a 2σ box around the solar values, where 133 stars were considered. Additional stars resembling the solar UBV colors in a broad sense, plus stars present in the lists of Hardorp, were also selected. All objects were ranked by a color-similarity index with respect to the Sun, defined by uvby and BV photometry.

Draft: Submitted to ApJ Supp. A Preprint typeset using LTEX style emulateapj v. 5/2/11 PRECISE RADIAL VELOCITIES OF 2046 NEARBY FGKM STARS AND 131 STANDARDS1 Carly Chubak2, Geoffrey W. Marcy2, Debra A. Fischer5, Andrew W. Howard2,3, Howard Isaacson2, John Asher Johnson4, Jason T. Wright6,7 (Received; Accepted) Draft: Submitted to ApJ Supp. ABSTRACT We present radial velocities with an accuracy of 0.1 km s−1 for 2046 stars of spectral type F,G,K, and M, based on ∼29000 spectra taken with the Keck I telescope. We also present 131 FGKM standard stars, all of which exhibit constant radial velocity for at least 10 years, with an RMS less than 0.03 km s−1. All velocities are measured relative to the solar system barycenter. Spectra of the Sun and of asteroids pin the zero-point of our velocities, yielding a velocity accuracy of 0.01 km s−1for G2V stars. This velocity zero-point agrees within 0.01 km s−1 with the zero-points carefully determined by Nidever et al. (2002) and Latham et al. (2002). For reference we compute the differences in velocity zero-points between our velocities and standard stars of the IAU, the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, and l’Observatoire de Geneve, finding agreement with all of them at the level of 0.1 km s−1. But our radial velocities (and those of all other groups) contain no corrections for convective blueshift or gravitational redshifts (except for G2V stars), leaving them vulnerable to systematic errors of ∼0.2 km s−1 for K dwarfs and ∼0.3 km s−1 for M dwarfs due to subphotospheric convection, for which we offer velocity corrections.

Received ABSTRACT Stellar evolutionary models simulate well binary stars when individual stellar mass and system metallicity are known. The mass can be derived directly from observations only in the case of multiple stellar systems, mainly binaries. Yet the number of such stars for which ls accurate stellar masses are available is rather small. The main goal of this project is to provide realistic mass estimates for an homogeneous sample of about a thousand FGK single stars, using four different methods and techniques.

Received 2017 January 10; in original form 2016 November 4 ABSTRACT Using 17 chemical elements as a proxy for stellar DNA, we present a full phylogenetic study of stars in the solar neighbourhood. This entails applying a clustering technique that is widely used in molecular biology to construct an evolutionary tree from which three branches emerge. These are interpreted as stellar populations that separate in age and kinematics and can be thus attributed to the thin disc, the thick disc and an intermediate population of probable distinct origin. We further find six lone stars of intermediate age that could not be assigned to any population with enough statistical significance. Combining the ages of the stars with their position on the tree, we are able to quantify the mean rate of chemical enrichment of each of the populations, and thus show in a purely empirical way that the star formation rate in the thick disc is much higher than that in the thin disc.

  • The Putative Old, Nearby Cluster Lod\'{E} N 1 Does Not Exist
RECEIVED BY AJ 2015 APRIL 2; ACCEPTED 2016 APRIL 5 Preprint typeset using LATEX style emulateapj v. 04/17/13 THE PUTATIVE OLD, NEARBY CLUSTER LODEN´ 1 DOES NOT EXIST EUNKYU HAN 1,2,3 , JASON L. CURTIS 1,2,4 , AND JASON T. WRIGHT 1,2 Received by AJ 2015 April 2; accepted 2016 April 5 ABSTRACT Astronomers have access to precious few nearby, middle-aged benchmark star clusters. Within 500 pc, there are only NGC 752 and Ruprecht 147 (R147), at 1.5 and 3 Gyr respectively. The Database for Galactic Open Clusters (WEBDA) also lists Lod´en 1 as a 2 Gyr cluster at a distance of 360 pc. If this is true, Lod´en 1 could become a useful benchmark cluster. This work details our investigation of Lod´en 1. We assembled archival astrometry (PPMXL) and photometry (2MASS, Tycho-2, APASS), and acquired medium resolution spectra for radial velocity measurements with the Robert Stobie Spectrograph (RSS) at the Southern African Large Telescope. We observed no sign of a cluster main-sequence turnoff or red giant branch amongst all stars in the field brighter than J < 11. Considering the 29 stars identified by L.O. Lod´en and listed on SIMBAD as the members of Lod´en 1, we found no compelling evidence of kinematic clustering in proper motion or radial velocity. Most of these candidates are A stars and red giants, and their observed properties are consistent with distant field stars in the direction of Lod´en 1 in the Galactic plane. We conclude that the old nearby cluster Lod´en 1 is neither old, nor nearby, nor a cluster.

High-precision determinations of abundances of elements in the atmospheres of the Sun and solar twin stars indicate that the Sun has an unusually low ratio between refractory and volatile elements. This has led to the suggestion that the relation between abundance ratios, [X/Fe], and elemental condensation temperature, TC, can be used as a signature of the existence of terrestrial planets around a star. Aims. HARPS spectra with S/N 600 for 21 solar twin stars in the solar neighborhood and the Sun (observed via reflected light from asteroids) are used to determine very precise (σ ∼ 0.01 dex) differential abundances of elements in order to see how well [X/Fe] is correlated with TC and other parameters such as stellar age. Methods. Abundances of C, O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, S, Ca, Ti, Cr, Fe, Ni, Zn, and Y are derived from equivalent widths of weak and medium-strong spectral lines using MARCS model atmospheres with parameters determined from the excitation and ionization bal- ance of Fe lines. Non-LTE effects are considered and taken into account for some of the elements. In addition, precise (σ 0.8Gyr) stellar ages are obtained by interpolating between Yonsei-Yale isochrones in the log g – Teff diagram.
