Arctic Adventure January 2021

Day 1 Arrival airport before lunch.

We go by buss to , by the big lake Träsk (about 1 hour) and check in at Abisko Tourist Station in double rooms. After lunch we head out for a walk along the Abisko Jokk Canyon. At 4 pm, a private wood-fired sauna by the lake is heated for us.

We have dinner at Abisko Mountain lodge. In the evening, we take the old chairlift up Mount Nuolja to visit the Aurora Sky center, which is one of the world's best places to see the Northern lights. Day 2. After breakfast, a snowmobile trip awaits where we will have a warm lunch out in the mountains. In the afternoon we go by bus (1,5 hour) down to Poikijärvi, outside Jukkasjärvi, and Fjellborgs Arctic Adventures. Here we meet Ann and Kenth Fjellborg, their guides and all the dogs. Now a dog sled ride awaits in the forest where we get the opportunity to run our own team of dogs.

Eventually we come to Väkkerä Lodge where we will spend the night in log cabins, the warm wood fired sauna awaits followed by dinner in the main lodge. http://fjellborgarcticjourneys.com

Day 3. After breakfast we harness the dogs and go back to Poikijärvi and the Fjellborg Homestead. After a coffee and a change of clothes we drive the short distance to the little village of Jukkasjärvi by the Torne river. In Nutti Sami Siida we are welcomed by a guide that will tell us about Sami (the indigenous people of Scandinavia) culture, history and husbandry. After lunch we walk over to the where we check in to double rooms in warm hotel huts or in the cold art suits of the Ice Hotel, whatever your choice. We get a guided tour of the Ice Hotel, its art and information on how the Ice Hotel is built every year during the fall, from the ice in Torne river and machines. Artists from all over the world come to work with the artistic part of the construction.

Day 4. After breakfast we go by bus to Kiruna (30 min) to visit the Kiruna Vaara Iron ore mine on a guided tour underground. This is the biggest underground iron ore mine in the world (500 km of roads underground) and the reason for which parts of the town Kiruna is being moved geographically in huge project. We hear about Kiruna's and LKAB's history, mining production and the challenges and opportunities associated with the transformation of the town.
