Elec~ronic Gantes Formerly Arcade Express Tl-IE Bl-WEEKLY ELECTRONIC GAMES NEWSLETTER VOLUME TWO, NUMBER NINE DECEMBER 4, 1983 SINGLE ISSUE PRICE $2.00 ODYSSEY EXITS The company that created the home arcading field back in 1970 has de VIDEOGAMING cided to pull in its horns while it takes its future marketing plans back to the drawing board. The Odyssey division of North American Philips has announced that it will no longer produce hardware for its Odyssey standard programmable videogame system. The publisher is expected to play out the string by market ing the already completed "War Room" and "Power Lords" cartridges for ColecoVision this Christmas season, but after that, it's plug-pulling time. Is this the end of Odyssey as a force in the gaming world? Only temporarily. The publisher plans to keep a low profile for a little while until its R&D department pushes forward with "Operation Leapfrog", the creation of N.A.P. 's first true computer. 20TH CENTURY FOX 20th Century Fox Videogames has left the game business, saying, THROWS IN THE TOWEL "Enough is enough!" According to Fox spokesmen, the canny company didn't actually experience any heavy losses. However, the foxy powers-that-be decided that the future didn't look too bright for their brand of video games, and that this is a good time to get out. The company, whose hit games included "M*A*S*H", "MegaForce", "Flash Gordon" and "Alien", reportedly does not have a large in ventory of stock on hand, and expects to experience no large financial losses as it exits the gaming business.

All aboard the impulse train: an analysis of the two- channel title music routine in Manic Miner Kenneth B. McAlpine This is the author's accepted manuscript. The final publication is available at Springer via http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s40869-015-0012-x All Aboard the Impulse Train: An analysis of the two-channel title music routine in Manic Miner Dr Kenneth B. McAlpine University of Abertay Dundee Abstract The ZX Spectrum launched in the UK in April 1982, and almost single- handedly kick-started the British computer games industry. Launched to compete with technologically-superior rivals from Acorn and Commodore, the Spectrum had price and popularity on its side and became a runaway success. One area, however, where the Spectrum betrayed its price-point was its sound hardware, providing just a single channel of 1-bit sound playback, and the first-generation of Spectrum titles did little to challenge the machine’s hardware. Programmers soon realised, however, that with clever machine coding, the Spectrum’s speaker could be encouraged to do more than it was ever designed to. This creativity, borne from constraint, represents a very real example of technology, or rather limited technology, as a driver for creativity, and, since the solutions were not without cost, they imparted a characteristic sound that, in turn, came to define the aesthetic of ZX Spectrum music. At the time, there was little interest in the formal study of either the technologies that support computer games or the social and cultural phenomena that surround them. This retrospective study aims to address that by deconstructing and analysing a key turning point in the musical life of the ZX Spectrum.

Forthcoming this year are collections from Electronic Arts ("Hard Hat Mack", "Pinball Construction Set"), Synapse ("Capture The Flag", "Gruds In Space" and "Type Attack") and Broderbund ("A.E." and "Choplifter!"). "LIVE YOUR GAME" Micro Lab has created a "Live Your Game" series of contests in CONTEST LAUNCHED association with ELECTRONIC GAMES magazine. The first of several planned sweepstakes will start in the May issue of the leading gaming monthly and will support Micro Lab's recently released "Dino Eggs". In the actual game, the player assumes the role of a time traveler who journeys to the past to save the dinosaurs from deadly contamination resulting from an accident on one of his own previous trips. Accordingly, the winner of the "Dino Eggs" sweepstakes will be flown to Chicago, given the all-around royal treatment, and get a special behind-the-scenes tour of the city's world-famous Field Museum. The next sweepstakes, says Micro Lab's Susan Goldberg, will be themed to the up coming "Heist", a new game from Mike Livesay. FIVE MILLION Despite the Big Shake-Out and a summer sales slump that had manu VIDEOGAMES SOLD facturers running for cover, videogame hardware and software had a IN 1983 stronger sales year in 1983 than many had expected as recently as six months ago.

  • Revising the Atari Collection and Maintenance Policies Of
REVISING THE ATARI COLLECTION AND MAINTENANCE POLICIES OF THE WPI GORDON LIBRARY An Interactive Qualifying Project submitted to the Faculty of WORCESTER POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Science SUBMITTED BY: SEAN WELCH PROJECT ADVISOR: DEAN O’DONNELL ABSTRACT In a world where games are becoming a larger influence in our lives the library needs an updated system for obtaining, cataloging, and loaning Atari gear. My goal on this project was to determine what our library had, needed, and what to preserve. I accomplished this by researching Atari’s history, appraisal sites, and consulting with the archivists about maintenance. I will conclude this project with instructions for future curators and a list of Atari items for the WPI Library. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Before we begin I would like to thank Professor Dean O’Donnell for making me aware of this project as well as our weekly meetings to discuss policy and potential research sources. I would also like to thank both Michael Kemezis and Jessica Colati for their advice on how to properly handle the Atari Equipment in the library and allowing me to take pictures for my IQP project. The move is seen as an attempt by Apple to sharpen up the corporation's marketing division, one area that many industry watchers feel Apple has never adequately developed. Mr. Cavalier had been in charge of developing and marketing home computers and video games for Atari since June, and prior to joining that company, was with American Can Co. THE TI-99/8 Here's yet another new machine consigned to limbo before it ever gets BITES THE DUST out of its carton. Texas Instruments has shelved plans to introduce the new TI-99/8 computer originally scheduled for release this Fall, and declines to predict whether it's been completely cancelled or only retimed for next year. Norman Neureiter, TI VP, announced that there would be no home computer console introduced this year, but wouldn't comment on the reasons for the change of plans. Earlier this year, TI dropped the 99/2 computer that was originally slated as a less-expensive version of the 99/4A, due to the slashes in price on that machine. COLECO CUTS BACK ON ADAM'S ADS; Coleco has decided to hold back roughly $4 FACES CLASS ACTION SUIT BY STOCKHOLDER million out of the $20-25 million ad budget originally scheduled for this Autumn's intro duction of the Adam computer, and to use the money instead in the first quarter of 1984.
