    FOREWORD I am pleased to introduce this 10-plan year which is a road map on how the Nairobi - Thika Superhighway Transport Corridor (NTTC) is geared to develop. This is the first comprehensive spatial plan covering the NTTC, which is within Ruiru and Juja Sub-Counties and it has been prepared at a time when Kiambu County is grappling with the challenges of tackling rapid urbanisation. I am happy to note that, this plan has been prepared in a participatory manner taking into account the contributions of various stakeholders whose role in the implementation of the proposals is fundamental. Kiambu is the third most urbanised County after Nairobi and Mombasa and has witnessed rapid urbanisation in the few decades with people moving into the County to settle, set business, and undertake other development activities. The NTTC has witnessed rapid urbanisation coupled with high population growth and economic activities in the last ten years since the onset of devolved government and the upgrading of the Nairobi-Thika Highway thus changing the corridor’s character. Due to this rapid growth as a County, we are expected to commit more investments to cope with this expansion. More people need to be accommodated in a suitable environment with ease of movement, adequate physical and social infrastructure and employment opportunities. However, most of this urbanisation is happening with little or no planning intervention as characterised by piecemeal subdivision and land-use conversions. Due to the absence of planning tools like the Plan to guide and manage this rapid urbanisation, the current development in these areas is suffering from uncoordinated growth, land use conflict, inadequate basic infrastructure facilities and services, poor housing, and inefficient public transportation system, amongst other challenges.

    Urban and Regional Planning Review Vol. 4, 2017 | 21 Slum toponymy in Nairobi, Kenya A case study analysis of Kibera, Mathare and Mukuru Melissa Wangui WANJIRU*, Kosuke MATSUBARA** Abstract Urban informality is a reality in cities of the Global South, including Sub-Saharan Africa, which has over half the urban population living in informal settlements (slums). Taking the case of three informal settlements in Nairobi (Kibera, Mathare and Mukuru) this study aimed to show how names play an important role as urban landscape symbols. The study analyses names of sub-settlements (villages) within the slums, their meanings and the socio-political processes behind them based on critical toponymic analysis. Data was collected from archival sources, focus group discussion and interviews, newspaper articles and online geographical sources. A qualitative analysis was applied on the village names and the results presented through tabulations, excerpts and maps. Categorisation of village names was done based on the themes derived from the data. The results revealed that village names represent the issues that slum residents go through including: social injustices of evictions and demolitions, poverty, poor environmental conditions, ethnic groupings among others. Each of the three cases investigated revealed a unique toponymic theme. Kibera’s names reflected a resilient Nubian heritage as well as a diverse ethnic composition. Mathare settlements reflected political struggles with a dominance of political pioneers in the village toponymy. Mukuru on the other hand, being the newest settlement, reflected a more global toponymy-with five large villages in the settlement having foreign names. Ultimately, the study revealed that ethnic heritage and politics, socio-economic inequalities and land injustices as well as globalization are the main factors that influence the toponymy of slums in Nairobi.

The MDGs and Sauri Millennium Village in Kenya Amrik Kalsi MBA: Master of Business Administration MSc: Master of Science in Management and Organisational Development MA: Master of Arts A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2015 The School of Social Science Abstract For a number of decades, foreign aid-supported poverty reduction and development concepts, and policies and programmes developed by development agencies and experts implemented since the 1950s, have produced limited short-term and sometimes contradictory results in Kenya. In response to this problem in 2000, the adoption of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) was in many respects a tremendous achievement, gaining unprecedented international support. The MDGs model has since become the policy of choice to reduce poverty and hunger in developing countries by half between 2000 and 2015, being implemented by the Millennium Village Project (MVP) ‘Big-Push’ model, seemingly designed as a ‘bottom-up’ approach. Poverty reduction and sustainable development are key priorities for the Kenyan government and the Kenya Vision 2030 blueprint project. The MDGs process, enacted as the Millennium Village Project (MVP) in Kenya for poverty reduction, is now at the centre of intense debate within Kenya. It is widely recognised that foreign aid maintained MVP and sustainable development through the UN and local efforts, especially in their present form, have largely failed to address poverty in Kenya. Furthermore, not enough was known about the achievements of the MVP model in real- world situations when the MVP model interventions were applied in the Sauri village.

Relatively less attention is given to the world’s poorest region, Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) where children and adolescents still comprise a high proportion of the population. Yet the number of adults aged 60-plus in SSA is already twice that in northern Europe. In addition, SSA is experiencing massive rural to urban migration with consequent expansion of informal urban settlements, or slums, whose health problems are usually unrecognised and not addressed. This study aims to improve understanding of functional health and well-being in older adult slum-dwellers in Nairobi (Kenya). Methods: The study sample comprised men and women, aged 50 years and over, living in Korogocho and Viwandani, Nairobi, Kenya (n = 1,878). Data from the International Network for the Demographic Evaluation of Populations and Their Health (INDEPTH) and the WHO Study on global AGEing and adult health (SAGE Wave 1) were analysed. The prevalence of poor self-reported quality of life (QoL) and difficulties in domain-specific function is estimated by age and sex. Logistic regression investigates associations between difficulties in the domains of function and poor QoL, adjusting for age, sex and socio-demographic factors.

As much as the solid waste that is generated may not be harmful in its current state, the methods through which this waste is handled, stored, collected and disposed can pose risks to the local populace as well as the community. The situation is aggravated by the fact that solid waste has no owner, and therefore the provision of quality solid waste management services is left for those who can afford it. The objectives of this study was to study the amount and composition of waste handled by waste management service providers, their equipment and personnel capacity, how this capacity affects their performance and identify opportunities available to increase their capacity thus render better services. The data was gathered mainly through the use of questionnaires, interviews and observation. The results gotten from the research revealed that the capacity of the various service providers is wanting both in terms of personnel and equipment.
