FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT Monday, January 27th, 2020; 12:01 AM EST Nicole Gerber National Council on Teacher Quality [email protected] 202-393-0020, ext. 712 TEACHER PREPARATION PROGRAMS IN FLORIDA RANK AT TOP IN NATION FOR THEIR EARLY READING INSTRUCTION Latest Review of Florida’s Teacher Preparation Programs by the National Council on Teacher Quality Demonstrates Impressive Progress for the Science of Reading Washington, D.C. — New data and analysis from the National Council on Teacher Quality (NCTQ) finds significant progress on adoption of scientifically-based methods for teaching reading by the nation’s teacher preparation programs, with Florida ranking 7th in terms of the average score achieved by its programs. At the national level, the number of programs to embrace reading science has crossed the halfway mark for the first time in the history of the Teacher Prep Review, with 51 percent of 1,000 evaluated traditional elementary teacher preparation programs across the country now earning an A or B grade for their coverage of the key components of the science of reading—up from 35 percent in 2013. Programs in Florida perform well above the national average, with 76 percent (22) of 29 Florida programs now earning an A or a B. Florida’s programs have made significant progress since the last evaluation in 2016. Both Florida International University and the University of Florida, in particular, receive special commendation in the 2020 Teacher Prep Review for being two of 15 exemplary teacher preparation programs, receiving an A+ designation. In total, 16 traditional undergraduate (UG) and graduate (G) programs in Florida earn an A in the 2020 Teacher Prep Review: Barry University (UG) Palm Beach Atlantic University (UG) Chipola College (UG) St.
