ABSTRACT: The important earthquake of May 21, 2003, with 6.8 Magnitude that struck mainly the province of Boumerdes and the eastern part of Algiers province has resulted in very high toll of human losses (more than 2300 dead and 10000 injured people) and in very important damage to built environment (more than 100.000 dwellings or constructions collapsed or more or less seriously damaged). The great majority of the built environment of the region is constituted by reinforced concrete beam-column structures which are the most widely used building system in Algeria. In this paper, the main features of this major seismic event triggered by a previously unknown off shore fault will be briefly presented. Then, the building damage will be analyzed in terms of nature and degrees of damage to different categories of beam-column structures and the main weaknesses and insufficiencies of such structures and the main causes of damage will be underlined. Finally the main lessons learned from this very important event, in terms of beam-column building system behavior, will be presented and some recommendations will be given in order to improve Algerian building practice and Algerian seismic code requirements related to such a system. Larbi ABID H Hôpitaux en cours de réalisation Dellys H Baghlia Bordj Menaiel Naciria Boumerdes H Isser Thénia Khemis El Khechna Boudouaou La Wilaya de Boumerdes est une wilaya côtière du centre du pays qui s'étend sur une superficie de 1 456,16 Km² avec 100 Km de profil littoral. Sa population est évaluée à 849.438 habitants. La répartition de cette population sur son territoire est homogène avec une nette concentration au niveau des agglomérations chefs lieux de daïras au nombre de 09. Son relief est une topographie de plaines et de vallées au Nord, de collines et de plateaux dans sa partie intermédiaire et de montagnes au Sud. Elle est caractérisée au Nord par la partie orientale de la large baie de Boumerdes au centre. L’arrière pays de la baie de Boumerdes est composé de monts côtiers, d’altitude modeste encadrant la plaine de Zaatra, moutonnée, qui comprend l’importante vallée du bas Isser. Le Nord- Est de la wilaya est relativement accidenté et ne comporte que la seule vallée encaissée de l’oued Sebaou. Elle constitue un carrefour de passage de la capitale dont elle est distante de 45 Km vers l’Est du Pays et la Kabylie par des voies de communication diverses (chemins de fer et autoroute). Son chef lieu de wilaya est distant de 35 Km de l’aéroport international d’Alger. De par sa position géographique, la longueur de ses routes et leur densité, la wilaya de Boumerdes représente en matière d’infrastructures routières une importance particulière.
