Polansky Stanton Glantz, PhD CENTER FOR TOBAccO CONTROL RESEARCH AND EDUCATION UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN FRANCISCO SAN FRANCISCO, CA 94143 April 2007 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Smoking among American adults fell by half between 1950 and 2002, yet smoking on U.S. movie screens reached historic heights in 2002, topping levels observed a half century earlier.1 Tobacco’s comeback in movies has serious public health implications, because smoking on screen stimulates adolescents to start smoking,2,3 accounting for an estimated 52% of adolescent smoking initiation. Equally important, researchers have observed a dose-response relationship between teens’ exposure to on-screen smoking and smoking initiation: the greater teens’ exposure to smoking in movies, the more likely they are to start smoking. Conversely, if their exposure to smoking in movies were reduced, proportionately fewer teens would likely start smoking. To track smoking trends at the movies, previous analyses have studied the U.S. motion picture industry’s top-grossing films with the heaviest advertising support, deepest audience penetration, and highest box office earnings.4,5 This report is unique in examining the U.S. movie industry’s total output, and also in identifying smoking movies, tobacco incidents, and tobacco impressions with the companies that produced and/or distributed the films — and with their parent corporations, which claim responsibility for tobacco content choices. Examining Hollywood’s product line-up, before and after the public voted at the box office, sheds light on individual studios’ content decisions and industry-wide production patterns amenable to policy reform. -

The first page of each of each review is objective; it includes factual information about the film and a synopsis not of the plot, but of how temporal phenomena were treated in the plot. The second page of the review is subjective; it includes the genre where I placed the film, my general comments and then a brief discussion about which model of time I felt was being used and why. It finishes with a diagrammatic representation of the timeline used in the film. Note that if a film has only one diagram, it is because the different journeys are using the same model of time in the same way. Sometimes several journeys are made. The present moment on any timeline is always taken at the start point of the first time travel journey, which is placed at the origin of the graph. The blue lines with arrows show where the time traveller’s trip began and ended. They can also be used to show how information is transmitted from one point on the timeline to another. When choosing a model of time for a particular film, I am not looking at what happened in the plot, but rather the type of timeline used in the film to describe the possible outcomes, as opposed to what happened. -

Application by the EFTA States participating in the EEA 1.1 Iceland European works The seven covered channels broadcast an average of 39.6% European works in 2007 and 42.2% in 2008. This represents a 2.6 percentage point increase over the reference period. For 2007 and 2008, of the total of seven covered channels, three channels achieved the majority proportion specified in Article 4 of the Directive (Omega Television, RUV and Syn - Vision TV), while four channels didn't meet this target (Sirkus, Skjár 1, Stöð 2 and Stöð 2 Bio). The compliance rate, in terms of numbers of channels, was 42.9%. European works made by independent producers The average proportion of European works by independent producers on all reported channels was 10.7% in 2007 and 12.6% in 2008, representing a 1.9 percentage points increase over the reference period. In 2007, of the total of seven identified channels, two channels exceeded the minimum proportion under Article 5 of the Directive, while three channels remained below the target. One channel was exempted (Syn - Vision TV) and no data was communicated for another one (Omega Television). The compliance rate, in terms of number of channels, was 33.3%. New York, NY: New York University Press, 2004. 304 pp. ISBN 0814736521. Heather Hendershot’s anthology Nickelodeon Nation opens with a testament to the strength of Nickelodeon in the children’s media marketplace. Noting that The Rugrats Movie grossed over $100 million, officially qualifying it as a blockbuster, and that the Nickel- odeon television channel (coolly referred to as “Nick”) has repeatedly ranked number one in daytime ratings in the U.S. since 1996, Hendershot establishes Nickelodeon as a pow- erful competitor to Disney with an incredible amount of influence in the realm of children’s culture. Despite Nickelodeon’s growth, in the field of children’s culture and media the major focus of academic scholarship has been the Disney Corporation—and rightly so, given the massive influence of the company in the sphere of children’s culture. But Nickel- odeon has largely been overlooked as a site of study. Hendershot’s anthology fills this void in the literature on the commercialization of children’s culture. It begins by asking how Nickelodeon became so successful. Instead of turning strictly to the usual group of scholars in the fields of children’s culture and television studies, Hendershot is committed to including the perspectives of individuals who have been integral to the formation of Nickelodeon. Industry insiders’ per- sonal accounts of the workings of Nick during its early stages of development are woven through almost the entire anthology. There are two chapters written by industry insiders, one of which is an article by Linda Simensky, a former director of the animation depart- ment at Nick, that gives a behind-the-scenes account of the development of three early ani- mation series during the franchise’s formative years of 1988 to 1991. -

The YA Novel in the Digital Age by Amy Bright A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English Department of English and Film Studies University of Alberta © Amy Bright, 2016 Abstract Recent research by Neilsen reports that adult readers purchase 80% of all young adult novels sold, even though young adult literature is a category ostensibly targeted towards teenage readers (Gilmore). More than ever before, young adult (YA) literature is at the center of some of the most interesting literary conversations, as writers, readers, and publishers discuss its wide appeal in the twenty-first century. My dissertation joins this vibrant discussion by examining the ways in which YA literature has transformed to respond to changing social and technological contexts. Today, writing, reading, and marketing YA means engaging with technological advances, multiliteracies and multimodalities, and cultural and social perspectives. A critical examination of five YA texts – Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief, Libba Bray’s Beauty Queens, Daniel Handler’s Why We Broke Up, John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars, and Jaclyn Moriarty’s The Ghosts of Ashbury High – helps to shape understanding about the changes and the challenges facing this category of literature as it responds in a variety of ways to new contexts. In the first chapter, I explore the history of YA literature in order to trace the ways that this literary category has changed in response to new conditions to appeal to and serve a new generation of readers, readers with different experiences, concerns, and contexts over time. -

This genre, typically associated with teaching children basic morals or cultural values, is one that adults do not often venture to read. This does not mean that all of children's literature does not contain elements that make them appropriate for both children and adult readers. In this thesis, I examine Daniel Handler's A Series ofUnfortunate Events and the way in which Handler utilizes allusions specifically in a way that mimics the very stage of childhood. Handler creates a series that is intended for a child audience but its clever use of the literary archive deems it also enjoyable by adult readers. 3 Acknowledgements I would like to thank Dr. Joyce Huff for advising me through this project. When Kerry Met Sally: Politics and Perceptions in the Demand for Movies∗ Jason M.T. Roos† Ron Shachar‡ September 4, 2013 Abstract Movie producers and exhibitors make various decisions requiring an understanding of moviegoer’s preferences at the local level. Two examples of such decisions are exhibitors’ allocation of screens to movies, and producers’ allocation of advertising across different regions of the country. This study presents a predictive model of local demand for movies with two unique features. First, arguing that consumers’ political tendencies have unutilized predictive power for marketing models, we allow consumers’ heterogeneity to depend on their voting tendencies. Second, instead of using the commonly used genre classifications to characterize movies, we estimate latent movie attributes. These attributes are not determined a priori by industry professionals, but rather reflect consumers’ perceptions, as revealed by their movie-going behavior. Box-office data over five years from 25 counties in the U.S. Midwest provide support for the model. First, consumers’ preferences are related to their political tendencies. For example, we find that counties that voted for congressional Republicans prefer movies starring young, white, female actors over those starring African-American, male actors. Second, perceived attributes provide new insights into con- sumers’ preferences. For example, one of these attributes is the movie’s degree of seriousness.
