E1 Arquipelago dos Açores Imray-Iolaire CHARTS FOR THE ATLANTIC OCEAN ABOUT THIS CHART Compiled by DM Street Jnr DM Street Jr, the well known yachting author, has been working with Imray to compile the Imray-Iolaire charts of the eastern Caribbean since 1979. In 1989, after 9 Translatlantic voyages aboard the 46’ englineless yawl, Iolaire , which he owned for 53 years, he began compiling the Imray-Iolaire charts to the Atlantic Islands . His knowledge of the Azores has been gathered over a 35 year period. He explored the Azores aboard Iolaire in 1985, 1989 and 2005. In 2002 he visited some of the islands on the 48’ ketch Nimrod , and travelled by air and ferry to others in the group. In 2009, courtesy of the Azorean harbour department and tourist office, Street spent two weeks visiting and exploring all the islands by air and ferry. Carla Cook’s help in obtaining the latest information on marinas and harbours has been IMPORTANT tremendous and Bob Siverman’s 1981 Cruising Guide to the Azores has been used For the latest chart extensively, with his permission, in the preparation of these notes. The author and publishers believe that this chart is the most accurate and up to date corrections visit available of the area it covers. It can, however, only remain so if mariners notify the www.imray.com publishers of any inaccuracy or need for correction of which they may be aware. Senhor Vasco Alves Cordeiro, É com grande preocupação que nós, os signatários nacionais e internacionais desta carta aberta, que lhe é dirigida na sua função de Presidente do Governo Regional dos Açores, observamos uma evolução inquietante nos Açores e nas suas águas territoriais (ZEEA, Zona Económica Exclusiva dos Açores). No ecossistema do Atlântico, os Açores têm uma importância fundamental para a natureza e os seus seres vivos, tanto debaixo como acima da água. A conservação deste singular ecossistema central é uma tarefa crucial para a humanidade. A destruição deste sistema pode ter consequências graves para os seres humanos, não só nos Açores. Por consideração pelas gerações vindouras e por consideração pelo tratamento sustentável transgeracional da natureza dos Açores, gostávamos de lhe apelar a mudar fundamentalmente a sua política no domínio da proteção ambiental e marítima. Há muitos anos que, juntamente com peritos, o Governo Regional e diversas administrações das nove ilhas estabeleceram zonas de proteção marítima e reservas naturais no mar à volta dos Açores e também diretamente nas ilhas, pelo menos teoricamente. Desde 08.07.2008 estão legislados Parques Naturais de Ilha, para cada uma das Ilhas dos Açores (1). No entanto, para que serve o estabelecimento de zonas de proteção marítima se estas leis excluem espécies pelágicas, como o tubarão, o espadarte e o atum, o isco vivo, e se se continua a autorizar que embarcações de pesca permaneçam, e até desenvolvam atividades extrativas nas zonas a que chamam Reservas? Se não se trava a pesca ilegal na prática, se as zonas de proteção marítima não são respeitadas e, apesar de muitas indicações, participações e solicitações no sentido de mudar isso, continuarem a ser exploradas pelo setor da pesca, teremos certamente o futuro comprometido. -

The Azores archipelago The Azores are a volcanic archipelago located in the middle of North Atlantic Ocean. Together with the archipelagos of Madeira, Selvagens, Canary Islands and Cabo Verde, they are part of Macaronesia, the “happy islands” (Fernández-Palacios, 2010). The Azorean Islands were discovered by Portuguese naviga- tors in 1427 (Santa Maria), Flores and Corvo being the last islands to be found in 1452. However, accord- ing to old maps its existence was previously known. It is believed that the archipelago received its name from birds that were common in these islands either the Goshawk (Açor in Portuguese) or a local subspe- cies of Buzzard (Buteo buteo rothschildi) that the sailors erroneously identified as goshawks (Frutuoso, 1963). The archipelago is composed by nine main islands and some small islets. The islands are divided in three groups: the eastern group with Santa Maria, São Miguel and Formigas islets, the central group with Terceira, Graciosa, São Jorge, Pico and Faial and the western group composed by Flores and Corvo (Fig. -

Before the evolutionary and biogeographic implications of these fossils can be understood, however, their associated depositional environments and geo- logic ages must be determined. Here we present preliminary results from sedi- mentary facies analysis and strontium isotope chronostratigraphic analysis of sed- iments and fossils from two localities on Santa Maria Island that provide a window into shallow-marine environments and communities within the mid-Atlantic Ocean during the Neogene. Pedra-que-Pica on the southeastern corner of Santa Maria contains strata of fine-grained lithic calcarenite, coquina, and fine- to medi- um-grained lithic wacke that represent a regressive sequence from transition-zone to foreshore environments. The second locality at Pedreira do Campo on the south- western-side of Santa Maria contains limestone and fine- to coarse-grained lithic arenite that represent a regressive sequence from shallow bank to shoreface-fore- shore environments.
