Journal of Social Studies Education Research Sosyal Bilgiler Eğitimi Araştırmaları Dergisi 2019:10 (3),364-386 www.jsser.org Gaminguistics: Proposing a Framework on the Communication of Video Game Avatars Giyoto Giyoto1, SF. Luthfie Arguby Purnomo2, Lilik Untari3, SF. Lukfianka Sanjaya Purnama4 & Nur Asiyah5 Abstract This study attempts to construct a communication framework of video game avatars. Employing Aarseth’s textonomy, Rehak’s avatar’s life cycle, and Lury’s prosthetic culture avatar’s theories as the basis of analysis on fifty-five purposively selected games, this study proposes ACTION (Avatars, Communicators, Transmissions, Instruments, Orientations and Navigations). Avatars, borrowing Aarseth’s terms, are classifiable into interpretive, explorative, configurative, and textonic with four systems and sub classifications for each type. Communicators, referring to the participants involved in the communication with the avatars and their relationship, are classifiable into unipolar, bipolar, tripolar, quadripolar, and pentapolar. Transmissions, the ways in which communication is transmitted, are classifiable into restrictive verbal and restrictive non-verbal. Instruments, the graphical embodiment of communications, are realized into dialogue boxes, non-dialogue boxes, logs, expressions, movements and emoticons. Orientations, the methods the game spatiality employs to direct the movement of the avatars, are classifiable into dictative and non-dictative. Navigations, the strategies avatars perform regarding with the information saving system of the games, are classifiable into experimental and non-experimental. Departing from this ACTION, analysts are able to employ this formula as an approach to reveal how the avatars utilize their own ‘linguistics’ to communicate, out of the linguistics benefited by humans. Keywords: framework of communication, game avatars, game studies, video games, prosthetic culture. -

Michelle Chun STS 145 History of Computer Game Design Professor Henry Lowood March 18, 2002 SquareSoft: What’s Behind the Hype? A Case History SquareSoft is one of the most important and significant names in the gaming industry, especially in terms of innovation and profitability. Square's games make headlines, sell systems, and generate enormous buzz. The company has become synonymous with role-playing games, and unfailingly creates games, such as the Final Fantasy series, that are constantly innovative and one step ahead of the competition. One may even say that SquareSoft has set the standard by which other RPGs are measured, and that games like the Final Fantasy series have become the ideal that many other RPGs strive for. The popularity and success of RPGs in the gaming industry can be partly attributed to the contributions made by SquareSoft. It appears that SquareSoft has the “Midas touch” and has been essential in the rise and success of the Sony PlayStation. For instance, its move from Nintendo to Sony in the mid '90s may have been a key factor in the ultimate success of the PlayStation – in January 1997, the hit game Final Fantasy VII caused a two-month surge in PlayStation sales (Asakura 209). Even Electronic Arts formed a joint venture with the company, establishing Square Electronic Arts in 1998. SquareSoft has also played an essential role in the expansion of the gaming industry into other arenas, such as the film industry. Through an analysis of SquareSoft’s history and future, as well as analyses of several games that are considered to be SquareSoft’s greatest hits, I will attempt to draw a conclusion as to what has helped SquareSoft become an industry leader and what has made the company’s games so successful. -
Legend of Mana by Benevolent V. 1.1
Legend of Mana By Benevolent V. 1.1 Welcome to the world of Fa’Diel. The world is gone, a barren wasteland, destroyed by war. You must rebuild it through the power of magical artifacts that hold the memory of a place within them. Take these Choice Points for the journey ahead. +1000 CP Race: There are no origins for you to take, as you cannot be inserted into a world that’s already devoid of life, but you may choose amongst the following races regardless. Roll 1d8+18 for your age. You may pay 100CP to choose your age and/or gender as normal. Human (free) Obligatory. You know how this one goes. Beastfolk (free) Cat person, rabbit person, etc. Choose an animal. Appearance wise, you look like that animal except on two legs. You gain minor traits relating to said animal. For example, Daena, a feline humanoid, can run on all fours as easily as she can walk on two. HalfBasilisk (200CP) One has to wonder either how desperate or how intoxicated someone must be to produce something like you. You appear mostly human shaped, with a human face, but with serpentine features and a scaly tail. Your lineage grants you the ability to turn people to stone or explode objects by staring at them, though this can tire you out. Good luck restoring people to normal after turning them to stone. HalfDemon (300cp) You are the product of a union between human and demon. You have a mane of hair and demoniclooking limbs, as well as horns. -

DO MODERN STORIES NEED INTERACTIVITY? A COMPARISON OF STORYTELLING METHODS IN MEDIA by Josiah T Lebowitz A Thesis Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Science University of Advancing Technology December 2009 © Josiah Lebowitz, 2009 DO MODERN STORIES NEED INTERACTIVITY? A COMPARISON OF STORYTELLING METHODS IN MEDIA by Josiah T Lebowitz has been approved December 2009 APPROVED: KATHLEEN DUNLEY, Ph.D., Chair MICHAEL EILERS, Advisor KEN ADAMS, Advisor ACCEPTED AND SIGNED: __________________________________________ KATHLEEN DUNLEY, Ph.D. Abstract As interactive player-driven stories gain popularity, some believe that they will overshadow more traditional linear stories. To test that belief, the key types of traditional and player-driven storytelling are explained, as is their past and present use in print, film, and video games. To further explain the issue, the key arguments for and against both traditional and player-driven stories are also presented. Building on this information, a survey was conducted to gauge public preference for various types of storytelling in all three mediums. The methodology, results, and implications of the survey are stated and discussed in order to bring about a reasonable response to the initial question of which type of storytelling will dominate. Dedication To all the authors, for creating a universe of stories that is every bit as vast, interesting, and exciting as our own. iii Acknowledgments Professor Kathleen Dunley, for all her help and support during the thesis process. Professor Ken Adams, for his feedback and being an all around awesome teacher. Professor Mike Eilers, for his feedback and being another awesome teacher. -

Introduction egend of Mana is a game of epic magnitude. It isn't a straightforward RPG like most others on the market today. Instead, you pick your own quests, and how to build your character. You choose how to build the land and who to help over the course of your adventures. You'll meet many memorable characters over your travels, some of which will join you, while the others will oppose you. The Legend of Mana takes place in the same world as the Secret of Mana for the Super Nintendo. But it is many years later and the Mana Tree is dying. The world is in ruins and you have to use the power of your mind to reconstruct it with the help of powerful artifacts. It is up to you to bring peace back to the land and rebuild it. Foremost, you are to witness what is happening in the land, as people return to the lives they had before the land was torn apart. This game contains beautifully hand-drawn backgrounds and characters. The music is great as well. But what draws me to the game is the long list of quests that are to be done, as well as the more than 200 special moves! The extra features available at your Home are also a plus. This is a great game that will have you coming back for more and more! The game can also be played with a second player, but it is not like in the Secret of Mana. It is no longer coop, but more of a follower situation. -
