Jensen3, Bruno Robibaro3,4 and Tamar Kinaciyan5 Abstract The numbers of reptiles in homes has at least doubled in the last decade in Europe and the USA. Reptile purchases are increasingly triggered by the attempt to avoid potentially allergenic fur pets like dogs and cats. Consequently, reptiles are today regarded as surrogate pets initiating a closer relationship with the owner than ever previously observed. Reptile pets are mostly fed with insects, especially grasshoppers and/or locusts, which are sources for aggressive airborne allergens, best known from occupational insect breeder allergies. Exposure in homes thus introduces a new form of domestic allergy to grasshoppers and related insects. Accordingly, an 8-year old boy developed severe bronchial hypersensitivity and asthma within 4 months after purchase of a bearded dragon. The reptile was held in the living room and regularly fed with living grasshoppers. In the absence of a serological allergy diagnosis test, an IgE immunoblot on grasshopper extract and prick-to-prick test confirmed specific sensitization to grasshoppers. After 4 years of allergen avoidance, a single respiratory exposure was sufficient to trigger a severe asthma attack again in the patient. Based on literature review and the clinical example we conclude that reptile keeping is associated with introducing potent insect allergens into home environments. Patient interviews during diagnostic procedure should therefore by default include the question about reptile pets in homes. -

It is rain fed land, Department of Zoology, some patches are cultivated by farmers in the form of fields for producing sources of economy, other University of Sindh, Jamshoro- Pakistan large part of desert remains untouched for natural vegetation for livestock, but unfortunately little yield of desert is also affected by variety of insect including locusts. During present study four species of locusts; belonging to four genera Anacridium, Cyrtacanthacris, Locusta and Schistocerca, two subfamilies Cyrtacanthacridinae and Oedipodenae and one family Acrididae were reported from Thar Desert from June 2015 to May 2016. Comparative study revealed that two species Schistocerca gregaria and Locusta migratoria are swarming and destructive while, Anacridium aegyptium and Cyrtacanthacridinae tatarica are non-swarming but are larger in body size and graze more vegetation than both swarming species. Though these four species have ecological and morphological difference but the nature of damage is almost similar. This study aims to determine the types of insects Coleoptera, Hemiptera, Odonata, Orthoptera and Lepidoptera in the Boyong River, Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta, to develop the Encyclopedia of the Boyong River Insect and to determine the quality of the encyclopedia developed. The method used in the research inventory of the types of insects Coleoptera, Hemiptera, Odonata, Orthoptera and Lepidoptera insects in the Boyong River survey method with the results of the study found 46 species of insects consisting of 2 Coleoptera Orders, 2 Hemiptera Orders, 18 orders of Lepidoptera in Boyong River survey method with the results of the research found 46 species of insects consisting of 2 Coleoptera Orders, 2 Hemiptera Orders, 18 orders of Lepidoptera in Boyong River survey method. odonata, 4 Orthopterous Orders and 20 Lepidopterous Orders from 15 families. The encyclopedia that was developed was created using the Adobe Indesig application which was developed in printed form. Testing the quality of the encyclopedia uses a checklist questionnaire and the results of the percentage of ideals from material experts are 91.1% with very good categories, 91.7% of media experts with very good categories, peer reviewers 92.27% with very good categories, biology teachers 88, 53% with a very good category and students 89.8% with a very good category. -

Guidance for POP pesticides 1. Background on POP pesticides POPs Pesticides originate almost entirely from anthropogenic sources and are associated largely with the manufacture, use and disposition of certain organic chemicals. Of the initial 12 POPs chemicals, eight are POPs pesticide. In the new POP list, five chemicals may be categorised as pesticides. These are alpha hexachlorocyclohexane (alpha-HCH), beta hexachlorocyclohexane (beta-HCH), Chlordecone, Lindane (gamma, 1,2,3,4,5,6- hexaclorocyclohexane) and Pentachlorobenzene. This module addresses baseline data gathering and assessment of POPs pesticides. Particular care is required to address DDT due to its use for vector control and Lindane due to its use for control of ecto-parasites in veterinary and human application, which may be under the responsibility of authorities other than those responsible for primarily agricultural chemicals. In addition, it is important that all uses of HCB, alpha hexachorocyclohexane, beta hexachlorocyclohexane and pentachlorobenzene (industrial as well as pesticide) be properly addressed. Specialists with knowledge of each of these areas might be included in the task teams. 2. Objective To review and summarize the production, use, import and export of the chemicals listed in Annex A and Annex B of the Convention (excluding other chemicals listed under Annex A and B which are not considered as pesticides). To gather information on stockpiles and wastes containing, or thought to contain, POPs pesticides. To assess the legal and institutional framework for control of the production, use, import, export and disposal of the chemicals listed in Annex A and Annex B (excluding other chemicals which are not classed as pesticides) of the Convention. -

Abstract-The species of grasshoppers of the superfamilies Acridoidea, Tetrigoidea, and Tridactyloidea of Micronesia are discussed with com plete data on Micronesian distribution. Two new species of Tetrigidae, Carolinotettix palauensis and Hydrotettix carolinensis, are described. Introduction Preliminary studies towards this contribution to our knowledge of the or thopteroid fauna of Micronesia are in an unpublished thesis by the third author (English 1978). Over the years, a considerable amount of additional information has been accumulated and two relevant papers published by the first author. In ad dition, there is a paper by the first author, in press, that deals with non-saltatorial orthopteroids. The first of the above publications (Kevan 1987) gives a preliminary survey of virtually all of the saltatorial orthopteroids (grigs) known to occur in Micronesia, as well as defining the limits of the region and giving a brief review of the relevant literature on the insects concerned. It also discusses some important points relating to the nomenclature of some of them. The second publication (Kevan 1990) is concerned with the same groups of insects, but confines its attention, more or less, to known or suspected introduced species (including Acridoidea) and their probable origins. A few non-saltatorial or thopteroids are also mentioned in passing. 2 Another paper (Kevan unpublished ) deals very fully with all groups of or thopteroids other than members of the saltatorial orders (termites and earwigs in cluded), mainly as recorded in the literature, which is extensively reviewed. -

HALTERES, Volume 4, 1-11, 2013 ISSN 0973-1555 © SHBBIR R KHAN AND NEELKAMAL RASTOGI Recolonisation patterns of orthopteran species in successional stages of revegetated coal mine sites Shbbir R Khan and Neelkamal Rastogi * Insect Behavioural Ecology Laboratory, Department of Zoology, Centre of Advanced Study, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi – 221 005, U.P., India (*e-mail: [email protected]) Abstract The diversity and abundance of insects belonging to the order Orthoptera was studied in coal mine spoils of different ages (0- 10 year old) located in Singrauli and the adjoining border area between Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh in India. The abundance of the 21 orthopteran species (belonging to 16 genera) showed significant variations in 0-8 year old mine sites relative to the 10 year old reference site. Orthopteran alpha diversity increased sharply in the 2 year old site. The gradual increase in alpha diversity in the 4-10 year old sites did not demonstrate any significant differences. However, abundance and number of grasshopper species showed a clear linear increase with increase with mine site rehabilitation. Overlap in orthopteran rank abundance curves obtained for 4-10 year old sites is probably due to differences in the occurrence, abundance and diversity patterns of grasshopper and cricket species with increase in mine site rehabilitation age. Our results demonstrate that grasshopper species assemblages are highly sensitive to variations in the level of anthropogenically-caused disturbance, due to mining activities. Thus, the abundance patterns of grasshoppers, including those of habitat specialists, may be of significance in evaluation of the restoration progress in degraded ecosystems, such as mine sites.
