• Iisalmi is situated, with its 23 000 inhabitants, in Eastern Finland in the Northern Savo province belonging at the same time to the Upper Savo sub-region (62 000 inh.), which is EU’s Objective 1 region. • The town of IISALMI was founded in 1891 and incorporated with the rural commune in 1970. • Total area of Iisalmi is 872,6 km² including 763,3 km² of ground and 109,3 km² of water area. • Characteristic features of the region are unspoilt nature with many lakes and a friendly atmosphere with a strong sense of regional culture, tradition and humour.

• Quite a large promotion of the work force still earns its income from primary production (6,4 %). The share of the work force in the manufacturing industries is 24,8 % and in the service industry 65,8 %, (unknown 3 %). • The town of Iisalmi and other municipal federations are among the largest employers in the region. • The principal industrial sectors are the metalworking, engineering, and the mechanical wood processing industries (sawmills), but there are also good examples of food and beverage, printing, graphics, plastics and electronics industries.
