Many devastating human pathogens, including the causative agents of malaria and toxoplasmosis, have evolved from a photosynthetic ancestor. However, how an organism transitions from a photosynthetic to a parasitic life history strategy remains mostly unknown. Parasites have independently evolved dozens of times throughout the Florideophyceae (Rhodophyta), and often infect close relatives. This framework enables direct comparisons between autotrophs and parasites to investigate the early stages of parasite evolution. -

France ABSTRACT: Seasonal variations of distribution of the gametophytic and tetrasporophytlc generations, growth, carrageenans, phosphorus and nitrogen nutrition, and dry matter content were studied in 2 of the most contrasting forms of the red alga Chondrus crispus Stackhouse in Britanny. France. Seasonal variations of generations were more pronounced in the infralittoral than in the midlittoral form; the former had more reproductively mature plants and twice as many tetrasporophytes. Growth was greater in the infralittoral than in the midlittoral form. Contents of total carrageenans were comparable in the 2 forms; the K-, L-, and p-carrageenan structures did not vary significantly (qualitatively, quantitatively, during the year, or between the 2 forms). The midlittoral form had a higher total phosphorus content, more marked seasonal variations and an earlier spring decline than the infralittoral form Seasonal variations of total nitrogen content had different patterns in the 2 forins during summer The dry matter content of the infralittoral form was lower than that of the midlittoral form. These eco-physiological and biochemical differences and similarities are discussed in terms of the polymorphism of this alga. -

WILLIAM JOHANSEN Biology Department, Clark University, Worcester, Massachusetts 01610, USA Articulated and non-articulated coralline alga e were brought together in the family Corallinaceae in essentially its present-day circumscription by Decaisne in 1842. Since that time, this family has been perceived as one of the most distinctive assemblages of Rhodophyceae. Alignment of families of red algae into orders based on criteria that today are considered to reflect natural relationships extends back only as far as 1892, when Schmitz presented a scheme founded largely on details of the female reproductive system and gonimoblast development. In that scheme, the Corallinaceae occupied an anomalous position in the Cryptonemiales. While attempts have been made to modify the definition of the Cryptonemiales to accommodate the Corallinaceae more comfortably, an ongoing accumulation of information supports the segregation of that family into its own order. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The calcareous crusted epiphytic algae are a group of extremely delicate, fragile and poorly studied algae. The subfamily Melobesioideae (Corallinophycidae, Rhodophyta) includes the genus Melobesia, which has no record of molecular analysis. However, thanks to measurement data, it was possible to find enough similarity for taxonomic identification of two species: Melobesia rosanoffii (Foslie) Lemoine, described for the first time in South Atlantic Ocean, and Melobesia membranacea (Esper) Lamouroux, first described in southern Brazil. The group has undergone several changes of classification from animals to plants. Today crusty coralline algae have great importance due to the possibility of easy spore dispersal between oceans.
