  • 2018 APOSTOLIC PRAISE CHORUSBOOK Richard W. Smith
2018 APOSTOLIC PRAISE CHORUSBOOK The 2018 Apostolic Praise© Chorusbook combines a unique compilation of 130 choruses, written chiefly for those who have gone through the Apostolic Praise© series who wish to enlarge their repertoire of songs. It contains a wide variety of songs, from old standards such as “Wonderful Peace” to Gospel choruses such as “Saved” “Power” and “Breakthrough” to more contemporary songs such as “Jesus Messiah.” However, what makes this chorusbook different is the fact that the songs are not written with just the basic, easy, boring chords, as most lead sheets are. Instead, the songs have been totally rewritten with advanced, fullsounding chords, giving the musician that plays them a very professional sound. When the musician plays “O I Want To See Him” the Apostolic Praise© way, it won’t be with just the simple IIVV chords. Instead, it is going to have a variety of complex, beautifulsounding chords that will make the song sound more modern. Also included are some resources on how to transpose songs to different keys, as well as an explanation page for some of the unique symbols that this chorusbook uses. Richard W. One day an evangelist comes to your church and you have to play “Amazing Grace” for his wife, who is going to sing a solo that night. Unfortunately, she wants you to play it in the key of Ab and your church always sings it in F.

  • The Gothic Trespass in the Life and Songwriting of Tennessee Blues Musician Ray Cashman
DESOLATION BLUES: THE GOTHIC TRESPASS IN THE LIFE AND SONGWRITING OF TENNESSEE BLUES MUSICIAN RAY CASHMAN Victor Bouvéron A thesis submitted to the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Folklore in the American Studies Department. Chapel Hill 2017 Approved by: William Ferris Glenn Hinson Crystal O’Leary-Davidson © 2017 Victor Bouvéron ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Victor Bouvéron: Desolation blues: The Gothic trespass in the life and songwriting of Tennessee blues musician Ray Cashman (Under the direction of William Ferris) This thesis explores the pervading feeling of the Gothic in the life and songwriting of Tennessee blues musician Ray Cashman. I argue that Cashman emotionally responds to the South through the framework of the Gothic to assert his identity as a white southern working- class male. As a reader, writer and performer, he trespasses the lines of race and class. The ethnographic fieldwork I conducted in Tennessee, Georgia and North Carolina between 2015 and 2017 led me to reflect on the intriguing relationship between blues, southern Gothic literature and white working-class culture in the South. The songs written by Cashman often express a feeling of desolation, bleakness and decay, invoke a sense of nostalgia for a bygone time, or describe eerie landscapes and supernatural presences. Cashman also retells southern Gothic stories, like “Snake Feast,” inspired by Harry Crews’s A Feast of Snakes. iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This project started the day I met Bill Ferris in Lille, France, in 2013. Bill encouraged me to apply to UNC-Chapel Hill and introduced me to the field of folklore.

  • Steve Bassill: Monday, March 8 Mark 8:27-33 This Very Short Reading
Steve Bassill: Monday, March 8 Mark 8:27-33 This very short reading links together two powerful statements, Peter declaring that Jesus is the Messiah and Jesus saying that he must be killed and after three days rise again. Why are they combined here? Look at the passages: Peter Declares That Jesus Is the Messiah 27 Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked them, “Who do people say I am?” 28 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.” 29 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” Peter answered, “You are the Messiah.” 30 Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him. Jesus Predicts His Death 31 He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again. 32 He spoke plainly about this, and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. 33 But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. “Get behind me, Satan!” he said. “You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.” Why? Why did these two disclosures come at the same time? What are we supposed to learn from this? In responses to Jesus’ question, “Who do you think I am,” while the other apostles answered, saying Jesus is one of the prophets, even John the Baptist or Elijah, Peter answered, “You are the Messiah.” From Jesus response, “Do not tell anyone about me,” we are led to believe that he was acknowledging Peter was correct.

  • ELWA-Voice-Under-Eve
°"sZo,: $3.95 Vo;ez Under. E Palrx. The Story of Radio Station ELWA by JANE REED and JIM GRANT This is the story of a dream fulfilled. Through a combination of faith, vision, and hard work, a group of "dreaming" Christian young people have seen Africa's first missionary radio station become a living reality. Voice Under Every Palm is written against the background of Africa's rapidly changing scene, describing how Radio Sta- tion ELWA has been called into being to meet the challenge of Africa. It is the story of Jane and Dick Reed and those who worked with them in mak- ing the radio station a reality. ELWA is uniquely important because of the rela- tionship of the whole of Africa to the Re- public of Liberia, the first independent republic on the continent. Liberia's strong cultural, economic, and religious ties with the United States opened the way for this missionary radio venture on the African continent, convincing those involved with the founding and growth of the radio sta- tion of God's peculiar blessing upon the effort. Voice Under Every Palm is not the story of a man, it is the story of a work. Those interested in missions, especially missions in Africa, will find in this story an exciting new concept -a concept car- ried out by men and women skilled in the use of radio and other forms of communi- cation, against a backdrop of the ever- expanding need of a tumultuous continent. (continued on back flap) Voice Under Every Palm 3 No.
