Annie Lennox: Diva/Medusa spectrumculture.com/2018/03/12/annie-lennox-diva-medusa Daniel Bromfield March 12, 2018 At its best, Annie Lennox’s music is as deep, comforting and mysterious as that of Sade, the Blue Nile, or any of the other great sophisticated pop acts from the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. But in Lennox’s voice there’s a certain acidity that grounds us firmly in reality rather than suave fantasy. Ugly, real emotions are never far beneath the illusion, and on her cover of “Take Me to the River” or as she whispers into the mic on “Why,” she’s ready to kill. Even on something as atmospheric as “Downtown Lights,” she never allows herself to disappear into the mix. Helen Folasade Adu never loses her cool, but Lennox ends her best-known solo song, a jaw-dropping cover of obscure British band The Lover Speaks’ “No More I Love You’s,” by bursting into tears. Lennox was a relative veteran by the time she released her solo debut Diva at 37. She’d come to fame in the Eurythmics but had been kicking around since the ‘70s, as part of Scottish band the Tourists. After her personal and professional relationship with guitarist Dave Stewart ended, Lennox wrote most of Diva herself and settled on a new sound: less lean and more immersive than that project’s rock-band hijinks, with Lennox’s voice in the center of an environment rather than at the front of a machine. Diva opens with a wash of pads so lush and pillowy our heads sink right back into it. -

Liberal Capitalism as a Collective Action Problem Dean Curran [email protected] Paper prepared for the Annual Canadian Political Science Association Meeting Wilfred Laurier, Waterloo, Ontario May 18, 2011 Preliminary Draft Please do not cite without permission In their recent groundbreaking work, The Spirit Level Wilkinson and Pickett (2010) argue that advanced economies have now reached a threshold where economic growth is no longer an effective means of advancing the welfare of its citizens. Instead, for these nations, the key economic criterion for the generation of welfare is the distribution, not the production, of wealth (Wilkinson and Pickett, 2010: 5-10). Such views resonate with those of John Stuart Mill, who argued, contrary to the other liberal political economists, that human welfare would greatly benefit from reaching the end of economic growth. For Mill, it was only in this temporary stage of perpetual economic growth that “the energies of mankind should be kept in employment by the struggle for riches” (Mill, 1987: 748-9). In an economy without growth, the permanent maintenance of an equitable distribution of wealth would ensure that no one ‘has any reason to fear being thrust back by the efforts of others to push themselves forward’ and thus leave people scope to focus their attention and activity upon not merely instrumental activities (Mill, 1987: 748-9). This paper attempts to provide further support for these themes by delineating an alternative model of capitalism that illuminates how, without limits on inequalities, economic growth can lead to almost everyone in a given society being worse off. The particular target of this paper is an economic system in which the primary mechanism for the distribution of goods and services, wealth and labour is through competitive markets – which may be described as ‘liberal capitalism’ for the purposes of this paper (Coates, 2000: 9-10; cf. -

The Tourists: Ellen Harvey and JMW Turner
Turner Contemporary The Tourists: Ellen Harvey and JMW Turner May 18 - September 26, 2021 10 years after appearing in the gallery's opening exhibition Revealed, artist Ellen Harvey returns to Turner Contemporary opening the anniversary programme with her first UK solo show The Tourists, an exhibition paired with works by JMW Turner. The Tourists explores themes of tourism and ecology, our relationship to images, architecture and place, destruction and loss. Working in painting, sculpture and digital media, this exhibition brings together a group of Harvey's large-scale installations comprised of meticulously rendered paint ings and engravings. The centre-piece to the show is a new work called The Disappointed Tourist, comprising over 200 paintings of sites that have disappeared. From the Temple of Bel in Syria to Brandy Bucks restaurant in Margate, Harvey has crowd sourced places from across the world. Em barking on this work before the Covid-crisis, it has developed an unexpected resonance. "After a year where we've all been disappointed tourists, it feels like a good time to explore what it is that we really love about our world and to think about how we can tread more lightly on the beauties that we have all longed to visit." Harvey has selected two groups of works by JMW Turner, which resonate with her own explorations into image-making, experience and place. They focus on two very different tourist destinations: the ancient ruins of Italy, which Turner longed to visit from a young age, and Margate, which captured his imagination in his later years. Harvey has had a long interest in JMW Turner and Margate, and in 2011 she created Arcadia in re sponse to Turner's relationship with Margate for Turner Contemporary's opening show Revealed. -

Fesenmaier University of Illinois, USA Abstract: A four-cell typology of pleasure trips is developed based on number of destinations visited and the trip purpose. or benefits sought. Five distinctive spatial patterns evolving from this typology are identified that may be adopted by pleasure travelers: single destination, en route, base camp, regional tour, and trip chaining. Four of these involve visiting multiple destinations. Multi-destination visits are a rational behavior pat- tern and reasons that account for this behavior are discussed. It is sug- gested that the concept of cumulative attraction offers a conceptual under- pinning for explaining such trips. Benefits accruing from a better understanding of multi-destination trip behavior are discussed. Key- words: forecasting, multi-destination, tourism, pleasure trips, spatial pat- terns.
