  • C.650 Illanleah. by the Time of the Earliest Written Record of Monks
Monks Eleigh Timeline c.650 Illanleah. By the time of the earliest written record of Monks Eleigh in the mid-10th century, the manor and farming settlement here was already well established as an economically viable and valuable estate, and will therefore have been in existence for some centuries. It may be supposed that Illanleah (its original name), ‘the woodland clearing belonging to a man called Illa’, from the Old English word leah and an Old English personal name (the -n- is a genitive or possessive grammatical ending, equivalent to an apostrophe ‘s), came to be the name of the settlement here early in the Anglo-Saxon period, probably as early as the first half of the 7th century (perhaps around the time of the famous ship burial of East Anglian King Rædwald at Sutton Hoo). There would probably already have been a working farmstead settlement here during the Romano- British period, but with the coming of the Anglo-Saxons to Britain, estates continued in being but often took their names from their new Anglo-Saxon owners. We know nothing more about this man Illa, but we may suppose that he was either an Anglo-Saxon thegn (a minor nobleman) or a ceorl (a freeman or peasant farmer). At any rate, his estate was a very large one, to begin with comprising what later became the two estates of Monks Eleigh and Brent Eleigh before they were divided at some time before the mid-10th century. 946-c.951 The earliest reference to Monks Eleigh in the written records. In the Will of the powerful man called Ælfgar, who was Ealdormann (‘underking’) of the East Saxons (Essex) during the reign of King Eadræd of the West Saxons (Wessex), his many estates are bequeathed to his various heirs, and one of these estates is Illeye (Monks Eleigh): ‘And I grant the estate at Illeye to my younger daughter [Ælfflæd] for her life, and after her death to Byrhtnoth [her husband] for his life if he lives longer than her.

  • February 2019 Newsletter
for Issue Feb 2019 Connecting Communities ince becoming leader of Suffolk County Council, I have continued to keep broadband at the top of my agenda. I am pleased to tell you that the Better Broadband for Suffolk program has Sreached a new milestone, 93% of homes and businesses across Suffolk can now upgrade to a Superfast Broadband service. This is fantastic news and means an overwhelming majority of residents, businesses and organisations can now enjoy the benefits of faster and more reliable internet speeds. But as a resident and a councillor of a rural ward where some premises still do not enjoy these benefits, I know we have further to go. We already have a contract in place for Openreach to extend fibre broadband coverage to 98% of all Suffolk premises by 2020. But even beyond this, we are committed to reaching 100% Superfast Broadband coverage in Suffolk as quickly as possible. So, if you haven’t already done so, check if Superfast Broadband is available where you live by following the simple steps below, but don’t forget, even if broadband is available, you will need to upgrade your connection to enjoy the benefits of the higher speeds. I look forward to updating you on our future progress. Cllr. Matthew Hicks Leader of Suffolk County Council and Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Infrastructure Here are three simple steps to upgrade Step 1 Finding out whether Better Broadband is available to your postcode Visit our website at www.betterbroadbandsuffolk.com/upgrade-now. Just having the ability to connect doesn’t mean you automatically have Superfast Broadband.

  • Questions Asked by the Examiners. Matter 1A – Legal Compliance 1.1
Questions asked by the examiners. Matter 1a – Legal Compliance 1.1 In preparing the plan did the Councils engage constructively, actively and on an on-going basis with neighbouring authorities and other relevant organisations on cross-boundary issues, in respect of the Duty to Co-operate? [ 1.4 Does the Sustainability Appraisal (SA) provide a comprehensive and robust basis to inform the strategy and contents of the plan, 1.5 Does the plan include policies designed to ensure that the development and use of land in Babergh and Mid Suffolk contributes to the mitigation of, and adaptation to, climate change? 1.6 Does the plan include policies to address the strategic priorities for the development and use of land in Babergh and Mid Suffolk? Matter 1b – Legal Compliance (Habitats Regulations Assessment) 1.8 Is the Habitats Regulations Assessment robust and does the plan include all the recommendations identified in the assessment as necessary to ensure compliance with the Habitats Regulations? 2.4 Are policies LP09(1) and LP10 positively prepared, justified and effective approaches to planning for the accommodation needs of Gypsies, Travellers, Travelling Showpeople and boat dwellers? Answers: Question – 2.4: Policy LP 10 is poorly drafted, it has nothing to do with providing accommodation for boat dwellers. It also has little to do with boats in that there is no definition of what the word houseboat is intended to mean or describe. It also refers to defined moorings but fails to state what a defined mooring is. It is irrelevant to swinging moorings in the river as they do not require planning permission however do require a licence from ABP as do all moorings in the river.

  • Six Circular Cycle Routes Starting from Thetford
Six Circular Cycle Routes Starting from Thetford Base map cartography (c) OSM Foundation, CC BY-SA. Map data (c) OpenStreetMap Contributors, ODbL. Thetford Town Circular (10km; town roads and cycleways) A 10km circular route around the town. Mostly on quiet roads and smooth off-road cycleways. There is one 200m section on the A1066, where you could walk along the pavement instead, and one rough section along Joe Blunt’s Lane. High Lodge Loop (25km; quiet roads and forest tracks) From the centre of Thetford, follow Sustrans Route 30 on quiet roads north via Croxton to Santon Downham, then take forest tracks to the High Lodge Forest Centre. Return to Thetford via forest tracks and then alongside the Little Ouse river. Harling Road Loop (33km; quiet roads, one short busier section) From Thetford, take Sustrans Route 13 north to East Wrethem, then cut across via Illington to Harling Road Station. Continue via Roudham to Bridgham, and then return to Thetford along Sustrans Route 30. The route is completely on tarmacked roads. There is one slightly busy section of about 1.5km on the B1111 down to Harling Road. Barnham and Knettishall Loop (40km; quiet roads, one off-road section) Leave Thetford on the new cycleway alongside the A11, and then take the C633 to Barnham. Continue east to Knettishall Heath, and then return following Sustrans Route 13. It’s awkward to get to the start of the A11 cycleway from the town centre, as there is no cycle path along most of London Road. The route is all tarmacked apart from a 2km off-road section along Bridgham Lane.

Historically, the building was converted into a country inn and in more recent years a sizeable village house. Renovation works have incorporated new wiring, new plumbing and oil-fired heating system. There is a new roof for the annexe and the garage. All works to date have been carried out in sympathy with the age of the building and internally there are tall ceilings, numerous exposed timbers and other period features. The welcoming entrance hall has solid herringbone wood floors, double height ceilings, exposed beams and stairs leading up to the first floor. There is also a downstairs cloak room. The eat-in bespoke kitchen is spacious and comes with an oil-fired AGA and an electric oven, double aspect views, exposed beams, wooden floors and a stable door giving access to the garden. Adjacent to the kitchen is a utility room complete with Belfast sink. The dining room which has high ceilings with exposed beams and an impressive working inglenook fireplace, is big enough to accommodate a large number of guests. Next door to the dining room is a cosy sitting room, with a wood burner, where the present owners like to relax, read and watch television.
