In this paper, for the Earth-Moon Lagrange point L2 relay communication mission, shadow effect issues on a periodic orbit about L2 are investigated. A systematic analysis based on the time domain and phase space is performed including the distribution, duration, and frequency of shadows. First, the Lindstedt- Poincare and second-order differential correction methods are used in conjunction with the DE421 planetary ephemeris to achieve a mission trajectory family in a high-precision ephemeris model. Next, on the basis of a conical shadow model, the influence of different orbital phases and amplitudes on the shadow is analyzed. The distribution of the shadow is investigated as well. Finally, the configuration of the shadow and its characteristics are studied. This study provides an important reference and basis for mission orbit design and shadow avoidance for relay satellites at an Earth-Moon Lagrange point. During the mission, the lander and the rover, which will land on the lunar far side, will not be able to communicate directly with Earth because of the synchronous rotation of the Moon. Therefore, such communications need to be transmitted by a relay satellite. A periodic orbit about the Earth-Moon Lagrange point L2, owing to its unique dynamic characteristics, provides advantages, such as a relatively constant geometric relationship between the satellite and the Moon, long duration in Earth’s field of view, and low-cost orbital maintenance. It is, therefore considered to be an ideal position for relay communication. The concept of deploying relay satellites at the Earth-Moon L2 point was proposed in the 1970s [1]. Since then many studies concerning Earth-Moon low-energy transfer [2–4] and station keeping have been conducted [5–9]. As the angle between the Moon’s orbital plane and the ecliptic plane varies over time, relay satellites in a periodic orbit about an equilibrium point will not be illuminated in certain periods owing to the shadow of the Earth or the Moon. The duration of these shadows plays an important role in the design of a relay satellite power supply system. Long-term shadows will result in insufficient power supply and consequently affect the success of relay tasks [10]. This paper is intended to address shadow effects on relay satellites in a halo orbit about the Earth- Moon L2 point. In particular, we focus on analyzing the duration and distribution of the shadow effect for different orbital phases and orbital amplitudes, on the basis of which suggestions for mission orbit design are proposed. Further, a systematic analysis of the configuration, frequency and duration of a single shadow is presented. 2 Relay satellite mission orbit in precise ephemeris models 2.1 Restricted three-body model, equilibrium point and periodic orbit The circular restricted three-body problem (CRTBP) can be employed to describe the movement of a relay satellite in the Earth-Moon system. Five dynamic equilibrium points, i.e., Lagrange points, exist for the CRTBP: three collinear equilibrium points (L1, L2, and L3) and two triangular equilibrium points (L4 and L5). The L2 point, which can be used for relay communication is located on the opposite side of the Moon from the Earth. (5) i,j i,j X X The approximate analytic solution for a periodic orbit around the Earth-Moon L2 point can be obtained using (4). An accurate numerical solution can be obtained by the differential correction method. The southern family of halo orbits with different amplitudes around the L2 point in the Earth-Moon system obtained using the above process is shown in Figure 1. For convenience, the phase angle θ of the halo orbit is defined as the angle between the projection of any orbital point on the XY -plane and the X axis, and this angle has a positive value along the clockwise direction. The initial point of the phase angle θ is selected as the peak of the halo orbit on the negative Y axis (as indicated by the marks in Figure 1). 2.2 Periodic orbit in a high-fidelity ephemeris model To systematically analyze the shadow effect on relay satellites, the relative positions of the Sun, Earth, and Moon have to be considered. Therefore, a high-fidelity ephemeris model is employed in this study [12]. In this paper, we adopt the DE 421 planetary ephemeris. Assume that the position vector of a relay satellite in the selenocentric inertial coordinate system is [xi,yi,zi], the velocity vector is [x ˙ i, y˙i, z˙i], and the instantaneous angular velocity of the Earth-Moon rotation system relative to the inertial coordinate system is [0, 0,ω]. According to the ephemeris, the relative position and speed of the Moon in the geocentric frame are obtained as L = a(1 − e cos(E)). (6) If we take the average Earth-Moon distance D as the normalized unit length, the actual Earth-Moon distance can be expressed as R = L/D. Under the ephemeris model, the Earth’s position in the Earth- Moon rotation system is [R(1 − µ), 0, 0], and the instantaneous equilibrium point position is Rλ, where Tang Y H, et al. Practical procedures for the implementation of the control techniques are described, and it is shown that these procedures can be carried out with very small AV costs. Several advantages of this type of lunar far-side data link over more conventional relay-satellite systems are cited. First, a control law is mathematically derived from the restricted three body problem formulation and the associated properties are discussed. And next, some useful cases for the space mission are verified numerically using real ephemeris. The resulted Halo orbit is compact and circular realized with satisfactorily small thrust.     Stability of the Lagrange Points, L4 and L5 Thomas Greenspan January 7, 2014 Abstract A proof of the stability of the non collinear Lagrange Points, L4 and L5. We will start by covering the basics of stability, stating a theorem (without proof) with a few corollaries, and then turn to the Lagrange points, proving first the stability of all Lagrange points in the z-direction and then restricting our attention to the the points, L4 and L5. Introduction The three body problem is one that has been studied for many centuries. It consists of considering 3 bodies, subject to only to mutually attracting forces (determined by the inverse square force, gravitation) and to solve for the motions of the three bodies. This task can be extremely complicated and, following Poincar´e's example, most mathematicians and physicists have interested themselves in the finding periodic solutions to the problem, that is, where x(t) = x(t + T ) where T is the period [3]. Indeed not only does this offer a useful framework from within which to work, but also describes states that are most applicable and useful to real world situations. Finding these periodic solutions is by no means trivial. It is a problem that has been worked on for centuries and still is in modern times, one of the latest publications dealing with it as recent as March of 2013 [9]. Among the first to interest themselves in and find solutions to the 3 body problem were Leonhard Euler in 1765 and Joseph Lagrange in 1772 [3]. In his publication, Essai sur le probl`emedes trois corps (Essay on the 3-Body Problem), Lagrange proposed a method that had never been used until then, that of considering only the distances between the three bodies rather than their absolute positions [2].

Demand exists from users to operate payloads at Lagrange points, but a lack of regular rides results in a deficiency in rideshare opportunities. As a result, such mission architectures currently rely on a costly dedicated launch. NASA and Moog have jointly studied the technical feasibility, risk and cost of using an Orbital Maneuvering Vehicle (OMV) to offer Lagrange point rideshare opportunities. This OMV would be launched as a secondary passenger on a commercial rocket into Geostationary Transfer Orbit (GTO) and utilize the Moog ESPA secondary launch adapter. The OMV is effectively a free flying spacecraft comprising a full suite of avionics and a propulsion system capable of performing GTO to Lagrange point transfer via a weak stability boundary orbit. In addition to traditional OMV ’tug’ functionality, scenarios using the OMV to host payloads for operation at the Lagrange points have also been analyzed.

    Stability of Lagrange Points: James Webb Space Telescope Cacolici, Gianna Nicole; Hanson, Jake; Lejoly, Cassandra; Pearson, Kyle Alexander; Reynolds, Katherine ABSTRACT We continue to present a detailed procedure for analyzing the stability of Lagrange points both analytically and computationally. We verified the stability both analytically in a 2D Earth­Sun system, and computationally with a 3D N­body code. We tested the stability over several periods of time and plotted the path the orbits would take in such case. We also discuss the consequences of these stabilities with respect to the James Webb Space Telescope. I. INTRODUCTION Astronomy has been as a subject studied by humans for a few thousands of years. One of the most fascinating parts of astronomy is the study of the retrograde motion of the planets in the sky. Among the earliest recorded studies of the motion of planets was by Ptolemy around the year 150 CE (Jones). Ptolemy’s geocentric model of the universe was accepted for many centuries following his death. This model placed the Earth at the center of the universe with the Sun and planets rotating around the Earth in epicycles. It was not until Copernicus came along (1473­1543) that the idea of a heliocentric system came along. He believed that the size of the planets’ orbits was proportional to the distance from the Sun (Rabin 2004). This model, which features the Sun in the center and the planets rotating around it, was not accepted initially, but became the accepted belief of the universe. It was not long until the telescope was invented and people started to truly record the motion of the planets.

[email protected] Spacecraft interplanetary transportation systems using Earth and Mars Halo orbits are analyzed. This application is motivated by future proposals to place “deep space ports” at the Earth and Mars Halo orbits as space hub for planetary Mission. First, the feasibility of interplanetary trajectories between Earth Halo orbit and Mars Halo orbit was investigated, and such trajectories were designed with reasonable DV and flight time. Here, we utilize unstable and stable manifolds associated with the Halo orbit to approach the vicinity of the planet’s surface, and assume impulsive maneuver for escape and capture trajectories from/to Halo Orbits. Next, applying to Earth-Mars transportation system using spaceports on Halo orbits, we evaluated the system with respect to the mass of round-trip transfer. As a result, the transfer between the low Earth orbit and the low Mars orbit via the Earth Halo orbit and the Mars Halo orbit could be saved the fuel cost compared with a direct transfer between the low Earth orbit and the low Mars orbit 1.
