With Love from , & the Gang at the Singapore Philatelic Museum in conjunction with SNOOPY AND CHARLIE BROWN:

Snoopy at the Post Office Portugal 6 October 2000 Miniature Sheet Singapore Philatelic Museum Collection

“Snoopy is a very contradictory character. In a way he’s quite selfish. He likes to think of himself as independent, and he has dreams of doing things. Without Charlie Brown he couldn’t survive, but Snoopy won’t even give Charlie Brown the love and affection he deserves. That’s part of the humour.”

“I patterned Snoopy in appearance after a dog I had when I was about 13 years old. His name was Spike, and he looked a little bit like the original Snoopy. But Snoopy didn’t start off being a beagle. It’s just that ‘beagle’ is a funny word.”

Charles M. Schulz (1922 – 2000)

Singapore, 30 November 2015 – Charlie Brown, Snoopy and the Peanuts gang are household names today, but did you know that although the debuted in the United States in 1950, it was only published in Singapore’s newspapers 11 years later in 1961? You can now get your Peanuts fix at Singapore Philatelic Museum’s (SPM) With Love from Snoopy, Charlie Brown & the Peanuts Gang Exhibition in conjunction with SNOOPY AND CHARLIE BROWN: THE PEANUTS MOVIE, running from 2 December 2015 to 30 April 2016.

The first comic strip introduced Charlie Brown, and was published on 2 October 1950. This year marks the 65th anniversary of the comic strip, and to celebrate this, a highly anticipated movie titled Snoopy and Charlie Brown: The Peanuts Movie will be released in Singapore cinemas on 10 December 2015. Aside from the movie and exhibition at SPM, Singapore Post Limited (SingPost) will also be launching Snoopy and Charlie Brown: The Peanuts Movie commemorative MyStamp folder and lanyard. The exhibition and the limited edition MyStamp are organised in cooperation with Twentieth Century Fox, the movie distributor.

SPM’s With Love from Snoopy, Charlie Brown & the Peanuts Gang Exhibition in conjunction with SNOOPY AND CHARLIE BROWN: THE PEANUTS MOVIE Celebrate all things Peanuts and philately through a showcase of rare stamp artworks, stamps, and first day covers dating from 2000 to 2015, as well as comics and collectibles. The exhibition is divided into various sections touching on different aspects of Peanuts. The main gallery is devoted to the entire Peanuts gang, introducing the characters and some of their traits, as can be seen on the big screen in the upcoming Snoopy and Charlie Brown: The Peanuts Movie. A portion is dedicated to Charles M. Schulz (1922 - 2000), the creator of Peanuts, who created almost 18,000 Peanuts comic strips well-loved around the world.

In line with SPM’s focus on philately, the exhibition highlights the relationships the Peanuts characters have with friends and family members through the letters they write. These include writing to “Dear Santa” and “Dear Gramma and Grammpa”, to ask for gifts or to thank their grandparents during the Christmas period; sending and receiving of Valentine’s Day cards; and letters to Charlie Brown’s pen pal.

Spreading the festive joy is a Christmas section featuring special Peanuts stamps and comic strips related to the festival. Visitors can trace the origins of Christmas and the Christmas tree, learn more about Christmas-related practices such as carolling, as well as discover when the first Christmas stamp and card were created.

Another section highlights the times when the comic strip was brought to life through television, musicals and movies, one of which is a Peanuts TV special titled A Charlie Brown Christmas, a Christmas special first aired in the United States on 9 December 1965. Today, 50 years on, the popular holiday classic is still aired in the United States annually. Visitors to SPM will also enjoy greater insight into the making of Snoopy and Charlie Brown: The Peanuts Movie through the exhibition before it launches on 10 December in cinemas.

Ms Tresnawati Prihadi, General Manager of SPM, said, “Most Singaporeans would know of Peanuts; for some, it might even be part of their Sunday morning ritual to open the newspapers to enjoy the comic strip over their breakfast and coffee. One of the reasons for its popularity is its relevance to our daily lives. Through the Peanuts’ characters, we see ourselves and our loved ones, and they too, like us, grapple with issues dealing with friendship, family, and generally, life’s ups and downs. We are very happy Peanuts is featured on stamps around the world as this provides an interesting way to learn more about the comic through philately. SPM is excited to present this exhibition with the support of collectors and partners.”

SingPost’s Snoopy and Charlie Brown: The Peanuts Movie MyStamp Folder and Lanyard SingPost has collaborated with Snoopy and Charlie Brown: The Peanuts Movie to mark this occasion with a special edition MyStamp folder and a lanyard. Featuring the 12 popular characters from the world’s famous comic strip, this is a true collectible for both stamp lovers and true Snoopy fans.

Ms Peggy Teo, Assistant Vice President (Philately & Stamps) of SingPost, commented, “We are very pleased to work with SPM and Twentieth Century Fox to produce this limited edition ‘Snoopy & Charlie Brown: The Peanuts Movie’ MyStamp folder. The Snoopy and Charlie Brown comic strip continues to be endearing with its timeless wit and winsome insights into life. At SingPost, we continue to bring stamps which evoke fond memories and experiences for our customers.”

Twentieth Century Fox spokesperson said, “Snoopy and Charlie Brown: The Peanuts Movie is a heart-warming movie that will introduce the beloved Peanuts gang to a new generation of fans. We are happy to work with the museum to showcase the various characters and through the exhibition, fans can also learn more on the making of the movie in 3D.”

A Charlie Brown Christmas United State of America 1 October 2015 Stamp Booklet

The stamps mark the 65th anniversary of the Peanuts comic strip which debuted on 2 October 1950. December also marks the 50th anniversary of A Charlie Brown Christmas TV classic.

The ten frames show Charlie Brown searching for the true meaning of Christmas. All around him, his friends are enjoying themselves, but he is bothered by the season’s commercialism. He chooses to decorate a small tree and was disappointed when it collapses under the weight of one ornament. His friends come to the rescue, turning the sapling into a glimmering masterpiece.

The Flying Ace is one of the most popular fantasy identities of Snoopy. He sits on top of his doghouse (claiming it is a Sopwith Camel biplane) to do battle with the Red Baron.

“My son Monte was very interested in making World War I model airplanes. And one day I was just sitting at my drawing board and he came in with his latest model plane. While we were talking about World War I planes, I just drew a little helmet on Snoopy and suddenly got the idea for it, and put him on top of the doghouse. I asked Monte to get one of his books about World War I planes he’d been reading. I thumbed through the book until we found the name – Sopwith Camel. That seemed to be the best. And that’s how it all started. It really began as a parody of World War 1 movies.”

Good ol’ Charlie Brown is the lovable loser in the zigzag t-shirt — the kid who never gives up (even though he almost never wins). He manages the world’s worst baseball team, yet shows up for every game. He cannot muster the courage to talk to the Little Red-Haired girl, yet keeps hoping. Even though he gets grief from his friends, his kite-eating tree, even his own dog, Charlie Brown remains the stalwart hero.
