GRAND LODGE IN CRITICAL STAGE Grand Lodge (Chief’s Crown) faces a critical period in the next few days following surgery to repair damage to his right knee suffered in a paddock accident Thursday at Wood- lands Stud in Australia’s Hunter Valley. Woodlands bloodstock manager Trevor Lobb said the stallion shat- tered his carpus and his ulnar carpal bone. “He was playing around in his paddock, as all horses do, and he slipped,” Lobb explained. “It was just one of those things.” Woodlands flew a team of three of Australia’s pre-eminent equine surgeons, including Randwick-based Jonathan Lumsden, to Scone in New South Wales to operate Friday. Lobb reported Saturday that 12-year-old Grand Lodge is holding his own. “The surgery went extremely well and we are happy with the way it went, but the most crucial time, the most critical time for him is the next few days,” he said, adding, “He is eating up and he is extremely bright.” Grand Lodge, owned by Woodlands Stud, Coolmore and Plantation Stud in , was due to cover more than 100 mares this season at a fee of A$38,500. He has stood in Australia since 1995. SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 2003 14 Pages
