Kiss Gergely Gergely KISS: Magdeburg/Poznań and Gniezno The emergence of the Polish ecclesiastical hierarchy and its dichotomy Abstract Key words: At first sight the emergence of the Polish church system was a fairly simple process, the most important phases of which can be regarded as follows. The Polish Duke Mieszko I took allegiance to emperor Otto I in 966, then not much later in 968 the bishopric of Poznań was set up. Three decades later, in 1000 the archbishopric of Gniezno was established, but by that time the bishoprics of Wrocław, Krakow and Kołobrzeg had already existed. Naturally there were changes occuring in the Polish church system later – such as the bishopric of Kołobrzeg ceased to exist at the beginning of the 11th century as a result of the pagan uprisings, or in the 12th century the system of episcopalis got enriched with newer territories, centres as the power of the Polish Duke expanded – yet these dwell on the subject of the present study only indirectly. The main issue is the dichotomy of the church governance in the Polish territories – Magdeburg/Poznań, Gniezno –, which can be explained only with examining the circumstances of how the church centres emerged. As it is well known, the antecedent of the establishment of the bishopric of Poznań to christianize the Polish was the baptism of The study was made with the help of the support of the Hungarian Scientific Research Fund (OTKA) NN 109690 research proposal. Mieszko I,1 which on one hand intended to ensure peace between the Polish Duke and Otto I, on the other hand it provided the emperor with the possibility to expand his influence over a part of the Polish territories in accordance with his ’eastern policy’. The ’eastern policy’ (Ostpolitik) of the emperors of the Holy Roman empire, meaning how they considered the territories to the east, inhabited by the Bohemian, Polish and Hungarian tribes, was not uniform. While in the era of Otto I the central issue of politics was the expansion of the empire (Imperium) in this territory, in case of Otto III it was the expansion of Christianity (Christianitas). Otto I’s ’eastern policy’ meant creating strong German influence, dependence both in the politics and the church; the missions fit into the frames of the imperial church and the early church system emerged as its subordinate.2 Thus it is worth asking if all this reflected and if yes, how in the emergence of the Polish church system. The key to it – in my view- is hidden in clarifying the role of Magdeburg. 1 According to Widukind (cap. 69.) Mieszko was granted the honourable title „the emperor’s friend” with this. Following the trials of conversion tracing back to the 9th century3, it came into the forefront of interest of the Saxon dynasty to bring the eastern and north-eastern borderlands of the empire into political and ecclesiastical subordination. The significant change of the church system of the territories neighbouring the areas of the Elba, Saale and Odera in the mid-10th century served the conversion of the mentioned areas. The establishment of the bishoprics of Brandenburg and Havelberg happened in 948, two decades later there were newer establishments. The bishoprics of Meissen, Merseburg,4 Oldenburg and Zeitz (this latter one was placed in the nearby Naumburg in 1030) emerged in 968. The organistaion of the archbishopric of Magdeburg also fits into this program. In 937 Otto I founded the monastery of St Maurice, then the plan to change it into a centre of mission appeared first in 955, which idea was supported by pope Agapet II. The foundation of the archbishopric in 962 did not succeed despite the support of pope John XII,5 in all probability due to the objection of William the archbishop of Mainz and Bernard the bishop of Halberstadt. In the end, six years later – after the death of the mentioned two prelates- Otto I managed to put across his plan.     4 The structural framework of governance The last few decades of historical research have been focused on social interactions as a key issue in the research on the past. Medievalists have withdrawn to large extent from studying constitutional and legal matters, leaving such topics behind as some sort of anachronistic holdover of positivistic methodology. It seems, however, that there is no way for a study of political issues to abandon questions of the structural means of power – as defined in Chapter 1 – as an important element of the instrumentarium of particular players on the dynamic chessboard of the European High Middle Ages. These means, including changes and redefinitions of the legal status of the province under study, were an indispensable counterpart of the ad hoc political and personal measures related to in the previous chapter. 4.1 Marchia Milzania: the status of Milsko in the structure of the Ottonian and early Salian Empire The starting point for considerations about the formal status of Milsko as part of the Empire should be the assertion from Chapter 3 that between 1004–1007, Milsko for the first time became a territory administered by an individual appointed by the German king as comes, Herman I. Herman’s status as a royal administrator is illustrated in several sources. The most significant of these is a charter by Henry II from January 1, 1007 (DH II, no. 124) confirming the donation by the king of three ringforts (castella) in Milsko along with their districts (burgwards) to the Bishopric of Meissen.     LITHUANIAN historical STUDIES 16 2011 ISSN 1392-2343 PP. 119–141 FORMS OF COERCION IN PEACEFUL CHRISTIAN MISSIONS Marius Ščavinskas ABSTRACT The article analyses forms of coercion employed in so-called peaceful Christian missions. Two forms of coercion are distinguished: so- cial, implemented by the ruler towards his subjects, and political, imposed by a conqueror. However, the fact that on certain occasions missionaries employed both social and political forms of coercion is also taken into consideration. These occasions were cases when missionaries who faced a polarised nobility lacking a strong political leader (the nobility and/or the ruler would be the backbone of a successful mission) would undertake the formation of political structures, thus absorbing secular functions as well. This happened to the first bishops who worked among the Prussians and Livonians (Christian, Meinhard, Berthold and Albert). On the other hand, the analysis revealed that peaceful missions, as they have been perceived in historiography, contained certain forms of coercion defined by the term ‘social coercion’. Thus the logical question arises: what kind of missions can be qualified as military/coercive which in historiography are most frequently named ‘Schwertmission’? The article suggests the conclusion that, in their nature, Schwertmission were different from the so-called ‘sword missions’, yet were loaded with social coercion. Hence, Schwertmission and Crusade are not identical concepts, though they are still used as such in historiography. 1 In the early 1930s, the German historian H. Introduction The Western Slavs once occupied the territory more or less corresponding to the former state of East Germany that is the area roughly between the Oder-Neisse and Elbe-Saale rivers. They are usually called the Polabian Slavs or Wends. This is a question which was posed by Barbara Yorke in her work on early medieval England.1 In her opinion, the process of Christianisation starts with the conversion of the fi rst monarch and ends at the time when there are no more pagan rulers on the throne. In accordance with these principles, the author assumes that the Christianisation of England began with the baptism of the king of Kent, Æthelbert, that is most probably in 597. During the course of almost one hundred years however, there was a kaleidoscopic pattern of the occupation of the thrones of individual Anglo-Saxon kingdoms by pagan and Chris- tian rulers and also pagan rulers who later accepted Christianity and Christian ones who committed apostasy. This continued until the 680s, when a pagan assumed power for the last time, which marked the end of the period of the Christianisation process. Yorke also focused her attention on some other facts allowing a determination of whether and to what extent a ruling house of the period was attached to Christianity. Until King Alfred the Great established England various Kings ruled separate parts. In most cases the initial ruler came from the mainland. Alfred the Great (849-901) was a very learned man and studied all available past history and especially biblical information. He came up with the concept that he was the 72nd generation descendant of Adam and Eve. Moreover he was a 17th generation descendant of Woden (Odin). Proponents of one theory claim that he was the descendant of Noah’s son Sem (Shem) because he claimed to descend from Sceaf, a marooned man who came to Britain on a boat after a flood. See the Biblical Ancestry and Early Mythology Ancestry books). The book British Mythical Royal Ancestry from King Brutus shows the mythical kings including Shakespeare’s King Lair. The lineages are from a common ancestor, Priam King of Troy. His one daughter Troana leads to us via Sceaf, the descendants from his other daughter Creusa lead to the British linage. No attempt has been made to connect these rulers with the historical ones. Before Alfred the Great formed a unified England several Royal Houses ruled the various parts. Not all of them have any clear lineages to the present times, i.e. our ancestors, but some do. I have collected information which show these. These include British Royal Ancestry Book 1, Legendary Kings from Brutus of Troy to including Shakespeare’s King Leir.

    Slavs and Dogs: Depiction of Slavs in Central European Sources from the Tenth-Eleventh Centuries Andrea Vanina Neyra Introduction The economic, legal, cultural and symbolic aspects of the animal world have attracted growing interest in the humanities in recent years. Animals played a role in medieval literary genres such as bestiaries and hagiography where, among other functions, they often served as term of comparison to different peoples and societies. In this preliminary examination of how animals and peo- ples were depicted, my aim is to shed light on the ways in which the comparison was employed to characterise peoples and construct identities in Central Euro- pean sources during the tenth and eleventh centuries. Specifically, in the narra- tive sources (chronicles, passions of martyrs, and lives of saints)1 related to the Christianisation of Central Europe selected, I contextualise concrete references in order to show how certain depictions of non-Christian Slavs as dogs served both to negatively characterise pagans by comparing them to animals and to bol- ster the identity of Christians confronting alien cultures.2 My sources in this arti- cle are the following: 1 I am not going to deal with the specificity of the genres mentioned above but instead limit myself to referring to them in general terms. 2 This approach to the subject of animals and social identity, which I hope to explore further in the future, is not my first experience with topics related to the animal world: I examined certain facets of the relationship between animals, sin, and penance in Burchard of Worms’ Decretum.

    ZINĀTNISKIE RAKSTI https://doi.org/10.22364/lviz.110.01 VERBAL AND NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION BETWEEN GERMANS AND WENDS IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE TENTH CENTURY1* Mihai Dragnea PhD, Balkan History Association, President, Bucharest; Editor-in-Chief of Hiperboreea, an online academic journal published biannually by the BHA. Research interests: relations between Germans and Wends during the High Middle Ages, focusing especially on crusading and conversion. This study has provided a brief analysis of the linguistic interactions and ver- bal communication between Germans and Wends. What we noticed is that there is no Slavic language which has been unaffected by political and social influences from other dominant cultures. In the second half of the tenth cen- tury, cultural identity was linked more with political alliances than with lan- guage. Learning of German was a political reality which varied according to time and context. In order to maintain good relations with the Saxon nobi- lity, the Wendish elites needed to know German. This would have ensured a direct, unambiguous communication. Translators could interfere with the messages and generate conflicts. Some of the Wendish elites could have known Latin as well. As tributaries of Saxon margraves and dukes, they could have signed documents regarding their obligations. Therefore, a sort of ethnic consciousness was more developed among the Wendish upper classes than lower class. Moffitt New Mexico State University, Emeritus The intention of what follows is to clear up one of the mysteries still surround- ing the Charles the Great, now most commonly known by his later appellation “Charlemagne.”1 Born in 742, the son of King Pepin the Short (ca. 714-768), Charlemagne ruled as king of the Franks after 768; he additionally ruled as Em- peror of the West, from 800 until his death in 814. Sources in his time presented him as an emulator and successor of Constantine the Great, and successive West- ern Emperors presented their own personae as successors of Charlemagne. In 1165, 350 years after Charlemagne’s death, Emperor Frederick Barbarossa in- duced his anti-Pope, Paschal III, to canonize Charlemagne as a saint, just as the Eastern Church canonized Constantine.
