TITLE COVID-19 Situation Report SERIAL NUMBER 12 EPID-WEEK 20 DATE 11 May 2020

HIGHLIGHTS:  Seven (7) newly confirmed case(s) reported today: Four (4) cases from Nguru, two (2) cases from and one (1) case from Geidam LGA  The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases is twenty (20): Thirteen (13) cases from Damaturu, two (2) cases from Bade, four (4) cases from Nguru, and One (1) case from Geidam LGA.  Two (2) confirmed case(s) of COVID-19 reported amongst Health Care Workers (HCWs) in the state: One (1) nurse and one (1) Laboratory scientist.  Thirty (30) new samples were collected and transported to the NCDC Laboratory for testing  Conducted training -and deployed contact tracing teams to Nguru and Geidam LGAs.

EPIDEMIOLOGICAL SUMMARY:  Seven (7) newly confirmed case(s) reported today: Four (4) cases from Nguru, two (2) cases from Damaturu and one (1) case from Geidam LGA  The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases is twenty (20): Thirteen (13) cases from Damaturu, two (2) cases from Bade, four (4) cases from Nguru, and One (1) case from Geidam LGA  One hundred and thirty-four (134) contacts of confirmed cases are also being monitored  Two (2) new alerts have been received and investigated from Bade and LGAs  The total number of samples collected so far is 60. Of these, 20 returned positive, 8 are negative and the result of 32 remaining samples is being awaited.

THEMATIC INTERVENTIONS

Coordination:  Conducted daily COVID-19 pandemic response coordination meetings with thematic pillar leads, partners, and stakeholders in the state.  Supporting LGA level coordination of the COVID-19 response in Damaturu, Bade, Geidam, and Nguru LGAs.  Supporting LGA teams to scale-up contact tracing, IPC, and risk communication for the prevention and control of COVID-19 infections.

Surveillance and Epidemiology:  Conducted training -and deployed contact tracing teams to Nguru and Geidam LGAs.  Investigated two (2) new alerts in high-risk LGAs- Nguru and Potiskum LGAs  Completed sensitization of 30 WDCs on COVID-19 in , Fika and Machina LGAs in conjunction with Action Against Hunger (AAH)  Completed the Sensitization of 4,489 cash beneficiaries on COVID-19 in LGA, with support from AAH Nigeria. Point of Entry (POE):  Conducted supportive supervision and monitoring of screening exercise at POE in Damaturu and Nguru LGAs.  Continued monitoring of 62 Almajiris in quarantine facility who were deported from Nasarawa to Yobe state five days ago  The POE team continued tracking and monitoring of 4 people from high-risk states (2 people in Yunusari and 2 people in Potiskum LGA).

Case Management:  Seven (7) newly confirmed case(s) reported today; four (4) cases from Nguru, two ()2 cases from Damaturu and 1 (one) case from Geidam LGAs  Two (2) confirmed case(s) of COVID-19 reported amongst HCWs  Sixteen (16) confirmed cases are on admission in isolation centers. All patients are in stable condition.  Distributed additional commodities and supplies to the isolation centers.

Infection Prevention and Control (IPC):  Providing technical support to LGA RRT and IPC teams to scale-up contact tracing and disinfection of confirmed or suspected households.  Completed training of 60 leads mothers on COVID-19 in conjunction with AAH Nigeria. The aim is to create awareness, and cascade training in communities across 3 LGAs in Yobe  Completed sensitization in Fulani settlements across 3 LGAs- Machina, Yunusari, and Fika LGA, with support from AAH Nigeria Laboratory and Diagnostic Support:  Thirty (30) new samples were collected and transported to the NCDC Laboratory for testing  Engaging and following-up with NCDC to retrieve pending sample results.  The total sample collected is sixty (60); of these, twenty (20) returned positive, eight (8) are negative and the result of thirty-two (32) samples is still being awaited.

Risk Communication and Social Mobilization:  Promoting compliance with the use of face-mask in Markets and motor parks in high-risk LGAs  Continued public sensitization on COVID-19 prevention and control in the 3 geopolitical zones  Continued monitoring of risk communication activities in Nguru and Geidam markets.

Logistics and Operational Support: 1. Mobilized additional stocks of COVID-19 commodities from stakeholders in Damaturu. 2. Completed the state inventory records- to be shared with other thematic pillar leads 3. Supplied GH Gashua with safety/rubber boots and other commodities 4. Engaged the drivers deployed for COVID-19 response; six (6) drivers have already been deployed.

CHALLENGES:  Few partners are present in Yobe to support state-led COVID-19 response  Difficulty in transporting samples and retrieving results from NCDC Laboratory  Inadequate motorized campaign vehicles to scale-up risk communication during market days across the state

 Weak enforcement of interstate border closure at POEs.

NEXT STEP(S): • Continue active case search, contact tracing, and monitoring of contacts of new cases • Continue investigation of the rumors and media reports of deaths in the state. • Continue resource mobilization and community sensitization on COVID-19 prevention and control. • To follow-up with NCDC to retrieve pending sample results.
